DAILY DEVOTION

Developing a Sacred Conscience

Maintain a healthy conscience by reading Scripture, praying, obeying God, and confessing sin promptly.

1 Corinthians 2:10-16
The Lord has given you a conscience for your protection. To develop and trust this warning system, you must be committed to taking certain actions:
* Apply the Word of God. As you put into practice “the perfect law that gives freedom” (James 1:25 NIV), your conscience will grow stronger because you know God’s heart better.

* Arrive at decisions through prayer. Instead of making a choice because it sounds good, bring every issue to God in prayer.

* Agree to obey God. When you desire to function God’s way, you’ll consistently ask, What does He want me to do? This practice will enable you to discern and follow the Spirit’s lead.

* Acquire a sensitivity to the Spirit’s conviction. As believers, we are no longer condemned, so we must recognize the difference between conviction and condemnation. The Spirit always shows us exactly what in our life requires repentance—He doesn’t give us a sense of vague guilt.

* Abandon yourself to God’s will. Commit daily to be a “living sacrifice” and your conscience will steer you closer to the Lord. As you renew your thinking, you’ll “test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom. 12:1-2 NIV).

DAILY DEVOTION

How God Reveals His Presence

The Lord is active in the world today and wants to share His peace, courage, and joy with you.

Psalms 16:7-9
If you’ve never experienced the presence of God, you may wonder how He reveals Himself to believers. Our heavenly Father has many different ways of reaching out to His children:

God speaks. We may not hear the Lord’s audible voice, but He still speaks clearly and forcefully to our heart. His communication can be so unmistakable that those who hear Him remember the message and the excitement they felt long after.

God sends a message. Sometimes the Lord communicates to us through another person. King David received God’s correction through the prophet Nathan (2 Samuel 12:1-7). Today we may sense God guiding us in a sermon or in a conversation with a wise friend. It’s unwise to ignore such promptings—the message might be harder to receive outside of the Father’s perfect timing.

God makes His presence known through His Word. The Lord speaks to us through the pages of Scripture. When we spend time meditating on His Word, God keeps giving us new truths and insights (Psalm 1:2; Psalm 119:99).
The Lord is real and present in this world. He wants to share Himself with us so we can draw contentment, courage, and joy from His presence. However, to know what He’s saying, we must be willing to slow down and listen.

DAILY DEVOTION

The Purification of Our Faith

Like a master sculptor, God carefully chisels away anything in us that doesn’t reflect His character.

Hebrews 11:32-40
Most of us would love to have the heroic faith of the saints mentioned in Hebrews 11—it’s exciting to read about the great victories and accomplishments of those who relied upon the Lord. But the descriptions in verses 36-38, well, those are another matter, if we’re being honest. Enduring the process God uses to develop this kind of trust is less attractive.

Picture the Lord as a master sculptor standing before a block of marble. That slab is you. Envisioning the hidden work of art within the rock, He lovingly and carefully chips away at everything that does not fit the masterpiece He’s creating.

One of the first areas the Lord deals with is your character. His goal is to shape you into the image of His Son. And His chisel lays bare roots of sin and selfishness.

When anything or anyone becomes more important to us than the Lord, we have an idol in our life. To protect us, God sometimes uses adversity to strip away everything we have relied upon so that we will cling only to Him.
The chisel hurts—it sometimes feels as if God is taking away everything we hold dear. But if we trust Him and yield to His shaping tool of adversity, our faith will be purified and strengthened through challenging times (James 1:2-4).

DAILY DEVOTION

God’s Empowering Presence

Nothing else can satisfy the longing that God alone is meant to fill.

Psalms 42:1-5

God desires an intimate relationship with each of us, so He created humanity with a yearning for His presence.

Though He alone can fill that void, people attempt to satisfy their longing with all kinds of relationships and activities. But trying to fill that spot with anything other than the Lord is at best a short-term solution, one that ultimately will fall short.
The Bible urges us to stop our frenzied search for satisfaction in what the world offers and instead recognize that we should focus on Jesus Christ (Psalm 62:1). Yet so many people choose substitutes for His presence. It’s important to realize friends, hobbies, and even busy schedules can be good pursuits—as long as we prioritize time spent in quietness before God. But all too often, when the amusement of one good thing wears off, we seek a new activity or person instead of asking ourselves what our heart truly needs.

Nothing besides the Lord can adequately fill the place in our life that God has reserved for Himself. Our Father’s empowering presence is the only genuine solution. For believers, the Holy Spirit is already present within. What we must do is settle ourselves before God, and then He will make Himself known.

DAILY DEVOTION

The Cost of Running From God

Even when God’s will seems unclear to us, we can choose to trust in His goodness and respond with faith.

Jonah 4:9-11
You would think a life-threatening storm and a few days in a fish’s belly would shake some sense into a person. Yet that wasn’t the case with Jonah. The final paragraphs of his story reveal a prophet who technically obeyed God but allowed his heart to remain on the run.

Jonah paid a high price for running from the Lord—he endured many physical, social, and emotional consequences for trying to ignore God’s instructions. But when those events were long past, Jonah still grappled with the spiritual cost of his flight. He lived with anger and a bitterness so strong that he begged God for the relief that death would bring.

As believers, we cannot disobey the Lord without paying a price. Perhaps you have a habit, a desire, or a current course of action that you know is against God’s will. Have you considered the cost? The Lord is holy and righteous, and tolerating sin is incompatible with who He is. What’s more, the price for following our own will is high, but if we obey the Lord, He will bless us (Deuteronomy 5:33). We can trust in His love for His children, even if we don’t understand exactly what He’s calling us to do—or why.
