When you think you're not like sinners anymore.
You look down on their weakness and feel entitled to it.
That's the unseen pitfall.
Justified by faith in Christ doesn't mean you've shed off your flesh.
It's still there. The goal is to reign over it through Christ in you.
Crucify the flesh. Starve it to death.
But it can come back to life anytime you're careless.
Especially when you've felt superior to sinners.
When you judge and condemn those in sin because you have been forgiven of yours.
See how Paul still claimed to be the worst among sinners even with his apostleship and apostolic ministry?
Even if he saw the third heaven and given deep revelation?
Because we slip into a lot of sins that escape our notice. We are given power to live holy lives but God allowed the flesh to remain to test the depth of our holiness.
To test our mercy.
Because mercy triumphs over judgment.
To make us see who we really are in Christ.
It's why Jesus declared the tax collector justified with his humble prayer, while the self righteous prayer of the Pharisee never reached heaven's notice.
God hates it when we're particular about other's sins and ignore ours, especially when we do the same things.
We ought to remove the plank on our eyes before we dare help remove the dust in someone else's eyes.
But even after our eyes are cleared and we set to help the brethren clear their eyes, we must make sure it's "help," not condemnation.
Help.
Be merciful as your Father in heaven in merciful.
Do you help the fallen and sinning or do you cast them away because you believe your righteousness gives you the right to do so?
They saw Jesus full of grace and truth. Grace comes first before truth. Although Jesus made judgments between right and wrong, and even condemned hypocrisy, they just saw him being full of grace and truth.
Grace comes first.
Unconditional help comes first.
You remember Malchus' ear? Jesus healed it completely without any indication if Malchus repented or asked his help.
Jesus just helped.
Romans 2:1, 3 NIV
[1] You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
[3] So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
