While Christians often repeat the claim that marriage is a β€œcovenant, not a contract,” what does this mean? What’s the difference? And why is the distinction significant and important ?

A contract marriage is an β€œIf you.., then I..” exchange. You and your spouse have an unspoken agreement, in which each of you is committed to meeting each other’s needs, as long as they meet yours.

The problem with this mentality is that no one can fulfill the needs of their spouse fully or perfectly. You will find yourself keeping a mental score sheet - as soon as your spouse lets you down, you feel justified in withholding something from them. It’s easy to walk away from a marriage when you have a contract mentality that says, β€œThey didn’t hold up their end of the agreement, so I don’t have to hold up my end either.”

A covenant marriage on the other hand, says, β€œNo matter what, I DO.” You put the needs of the relationship ahead of your own needs, humbly serving each other much as Christ serves the church, regardless of what you get in return.

Viewing marriage as a covenant necessitates loving confrontation and forgiveness of sin when your spouse fails you and that can make one feel very vulnerable. There will be many times (even in the best marriages) where one or both spouses just don’t feel like β€œhonoring” or β€œcherishing” the other. These are the times when we must choose to be covenant-minded and to honor the vows we made before God to love our spouse come what may.

The way to experience marital fulfillment and to be successful through difficulties in marriage is to settle clearly in your own minds: β€œI made a solemn promise, and with God’s help I intend to keep it. I’m a person of my word. I’m in this (marriage) for life.”

➑️ Reflect on your vows. What did you pledge to one another? What has been hardest for you to uphold?
