TINIG SUNDAY REFLECTION | Gospel Reflection by our Dominican Postulants
Br. Alexander Bryan Loardy
Christ Alone is Our Hope
(John 11: 1-45)
In today’s Gospel reading, we see that Jesus came to approach Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, when he had already been dead for four days and was lying in the tomb. We may ask, “Why did Jesus do this? Why did He not come quickly when Lazarus was sick and heal him?”
In my reflection, there are at least two things that can help answer this question. First, it was to strengthen the faith of Mary, Martha, and His disciples. Often, we easily lose hope and give up when we face problems that seem to have no solution. We feel as if God is not present in our struggles, not answering our prayers, and abandons us. Many times, we stop halfway and fail to see that God is already waiting ahead of us. Through this event, the Lord shows that He knows the best time to help us, even though it may seem late from a human perspective. God knew that in the end, He would raise Lazarus again. We should learn to trust in God even when we do not yet see signs or results; he indeed has plans to prosper us. The second reason is to show His power and glory. In this Gospel reading we heard, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” This shows that Jesus has power over life and death. He is the Lord in whom we can always place our hope.
All of this God wills because of His great love for us. He wants our faith to grow, because through faith we can be saved. This same love led Him to sacrifice Himself on the cross, and to rise on the third day, so that we may have abundant life in Him.
As a postulant brother, I know that there are sometimes many challenges and struggles that I face in pursuing my vocation. However, I learn to trust in God’s providence for me. I believe that He will surely help and guide me. Every challenge and struggles that I encounter will help form me into a better person day by day, so that at the proper time, I may be ready to become God’s instrument for the salvation of many.
May God bless us all!
