The PUV Phaseout threatens to take the jobs of 38,000 jeepney drivers, as many cannot afford the immense costs of the new jeepney. (BusinessWorld, 2024). This impedes the very right to employment. We must advocate for a true modernization program which will implement effective safeguards and truly protect the job security of our jeepney drivers and uphold their right to work and provide for their families.

Marlyn Henning is a symbol of perseverance through hard work. She showed love for her family by putting the needs of her family first by pursuing nursing rather than fashion designing. She sacrificed by becoming an OFW and worked abroad to Saudi Arabia to earn money despite the tears of her family. Even when she visited the Philippines to give birth to her daughter she had to return to her work to earn even more money. She showed her love and sacrifice through hard work to give her family a better future. Always know that God has given us the chance to work not just to help ourselves but also become better as human beings by supporting others. ✈️🇵🇭

Included in the rights of workers are the rights to take a break from work or to rest. When God created the heaven and the earth after all the work was done he rested on the seventh day. This reflects on the perceptions of work that, we should learn how to reward ourselves with the luxury of rest once we complete our work or sometimes in between. We aren't machines that are programmed to work 24/7 or have abilities like machines to do so. The purpose of resting is dedicating time for God and strengthening our relationship, bonding with family. Regaining strength to repetitively continue working for the sole purpose of developing a more just and better society for the benefit of each individual.

In this time, there are those whose courage and strength gives us hope. Labor workers such as medical professionals, first responders, police, and so many more work everyday to restore safety and health to the people. there are some who work behind the scenes to provide essential goods that keep our world functioning like those who work in factories. Us Christians believe that every person is created in the image of God and has inherent dignity and worth. No matter the difference we each have, we are all made by the same creator and know our own worth. Society should not look at genders as a hindrance in receiving what we truly deserve in our life but look at the actions or work that an individual has done in order to deserve their reward. When we base an individual based on their gender, we place limitations on theirselves and we fail to scope the bigger picture.

As Christians, we should be able to view others as equal as God views us in his own image. society prioritizes certain genders thus rewarding them more and despises other genders all not based on their actions and hard-work but, their genders. So we must look at the bigger picture and promote equality in the aspect of pay, equal pay, so that ALL workers may receive the effect of their sacrifices and dedication.

The issue of work is at the heart of the issue of economic justice. The economy is a means by which people are enabled to share in the resources of the world. Work is a necessary means for people to create wealth and make a living but, it does not only revolve there. All economic life should be shaped by moral principles. Economic choices and institutions must be judged by how they protect or undermine the life and dignity of the human person, support the family and serve the common good.

We should not let the economy develop us into slaves but rather use all economic life as an instrument to work towards the greater good of society and not only become committed to work for the sole purpose of earning wages but to contribute in the development of a better society for the common good and therefore, valuing the lives of others.

- 1 Timothy 5:18

God made each of us in likeness of his own image and gave us a mission to promote equality and respect among our brothers and sisters. Promoting these values especially to those individuals who dedicate their lives in serving the community such as labor workers. It is our job to appreciate their efforts and give the respect and equal treatment they deserve as they continue to serve as fruit bearers in the society. They don't just deserve equal treatment but, freedom to use their voice and the wages which are due to them because of the dedication and hard work they put in their jobs. Let us spread awareness of the oppression these labor workers continue to experience and promote equality and respect towards them.
