SCRIPTURE READINGS FROM RSV-2CE NOW INCLUDED
In one week, over a thousand faithful worldwide used DailyOffice to pray the Daily Office according to Divine Worship. We're grateful for your dedication- your suggestions are the heartbeat behind every improvement. Today, based on that feedback, we bring to you an important update: the inclusion of the biblical readings from the RSV-2ce. Meaning now the readings are perfectly integrated into DailyOffice.online, taking away all interruptions to your time of prayer.

We are deeply grateful to Ignatius Press for making it possible for us to use the RSV-2ce (Revised Standard Version: 2nd Catholic Edition) Ignatius Bible. Their collaboration with DailyOffice.online is a gift to the Ordinariate's work of fostering prayer and unity in the Church.

The continued improvement of DailyOffice.online reminds us of St. John Henry Newman's reflection: "God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another." As such, we hope that DailyOffice.online will be a part of our mutual growth to God’s plan for us in prayer and devotion; so that our service to him may be revealed.

Let us continue praying that DailyOffice.online brings many hearts closer to Christ and glorifies God in all things.

REFORMATION DAY

Today is Reformation Day which incidentally is Halloween! Let us pray that Christians separated by the Reformation have learned their lessons, confessed their sins to God, do penance and beg absolution from God.

Photos are a painting of the Reverend Father Martin Luther OSA, who posted the 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg Church 31 October 1517. This launched the Reformation which changed history.

The other photo is the Vatican commemorative stamp showing the Reforming Fathers Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon praying and confessing before the Crucified Christ asking pardon for our sins.

Roman Catholics must do the same today. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Father Martin and the early Reformers had a strong devotion the the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Prayers for Halloween

Halloween is never about ghosts and ghouls but the living. The old prayers are all about Christian souls going to the land of the living and not the dead. As the tradition originated in pagan Europe, where people venerated the dead, the Christians venerated the living. Catholics look towards heaven in prayer and remember their brethren who are being purified by the fire of God's love in Purgatory.

From the Anglican Book of Common Prayer

Blessed are ye, O all ye Saints of God, who have been worthy to become companions of the heavenly powers, and to rejoice in the brightness of glory; therefore, we pray you, that mindful of us you would vouchsafe to intercede for us unto the Lord our God.

From the Latin Breviary before the prayer books were reformed after the Second Vatican Council

”I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living” Psalm 116:9

From the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England

O ALMIGHTY God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow thy blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living; that through their intercession we may come to those unspeakable joys, which thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love thee; through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

From the Latin Breviary (Prayerbook) before the reforms of the Second Vatican Council

O Lord, our God, multiply Thy graces upon us, and grant that joy may follow in the holy praise of those whose glorious festival we anticipate. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

In Times of Stormy Weather (From the Book of Common Prayer)

Almighty God, by your Word you laid the foundations of the earth, set the bounds of the sea, and still the wind and waves. Surround us with your grace and peace, and preserve us through this storm. By your Spirit, lift up those who have fallen, strengthen those who work to rescue or rebuild, and fill us with the hope of your new creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

RELIGION IN 2050

Christians will still make up the biggest community of believers at almost 3 B in 2050 The predicted human population in 2050 is 9.7 B. Christians will make 32% of the population. Muslims will catch up with Christians with 2.7 B. Muslims and Christians will make up 57% of the world's population in 2050. Who say's religion will go away?

That's why the faith communities have to dialogue. The biggest Christian community (64% of Christians), the Catholic Church has made this a priority, especially with Muslims.

As of World Mission Sunday Oct 20, 2024, there are 1.375 B Catholics in the world. The number of priests, bishops and religious sisters and brothers are decreasing and they are getting old. About the clergy, the bright spot is that the number of permanent deacons are on the rise with 42K now up from 30K a few years back. The bright side is that the number of Catholics is increasing.

A Month to remember the Martyrs

October is the month when we remember the 40 English and Welsh martyrs who died for the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Their feast day in England is on Oct 25. God was gracious to have allowed me to attend the Mass and prayer services twice, 26 years apart on October 25 in London. The first one was in 1996 at Westminster Cathedral in London at a Latin mass and the second one was in 2023 at an Anglican Evensong service at Westminster Abbey.

The 40 Martyrs were from all walks of life during the Reformation. Some were tradesmen, students, housewives, University Dons and professors, priests, religious, and the Nobility. They gave all for their faith, wouldn't betray their consencience and they prayed for their persecutors. All defended their right to pray in Latin, but didn't condemn those who wished to pray in English or vernaculars.

In the 21st century Christians are still perscuted for their conscience. The persecutors do not distinguish the Christian denomination they martyr belongs to. The Church is ecumenical. She is ecumenical in suffering and ecumenical unto death and eternal life.

All ye holy martyrs of Jesus, pray for us.

Martyr Dei qui Unicum (10th century Gregorian Chant)
A hymn for a martyr

Translated from Latin into English by the Rev Fr. Percy Dearmer, Priest and Canon of Westminster Abbey

Martyr of God, whose strength was steeled
To follow close God’s only Son,
Well didst thou brave thy battlefield,
And well thy heav’nly bliss was won!

Now join thy prayers with ours, who pray
That God may pardon us and bless;
For prayer keeps evil’s plague away,
And draws from life its weariness.

Long, long ago, were loosed the chains
That held thy body once in thrall;
For us how many a bond remains!
O Love of God release us all.

All praise to God the Father be,
All praise to Thee, eternal Son;
All praise, O Holy Ghost, to Thee
While never ending ages run, Amen

LATIN ORIGINAL

Martyr Dei, qui unicum
Patris sequendo Filium,
Victis triumphans hostibus,
Victor fruens caelestibus.

Tui precatus munere
Nostrum reatum dilue,
Arcens mali contagium,
Vitae removens taedium.

Soluta sunt jam vincula
Tui sacrati corporis:
Nos solve vinclis saeculi
Amore Filii Dei.

Gloria tibi, Domine,
Qui surrexisti a mortuis,
Cum Patre et Sancto Spiritu
In sempiterna saecula. Amen.
