Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church

First Reading | 1 Peter 1:3-9 (or Genesis 3:9-15, 20 or Acts 1:12-14)

Reflection
One of the challenges of being a Christian is maintaining the joy of knowing we have received the gift of salvation. Why? Because we allow ourselves to become too busy and neglect time for reflection on our faith and all it should mean to us. Let us pray for the grace to remain ever joyful in the Lord.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you 5 who by the power of God are safeguarded through faith, to a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the final time. 6 In this you rejoice, although now for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials, 7 so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable even though tested by fire, may prove to be for praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Although you have not seen him you love him; even though you do not see him now yet believe in him, you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 9 as you attain the goal of faith, the salvation of your souls.

Responsorial Psalm | Psalm 111:1-2, 5-6, 9, 10 (or Psalm 87:1-2. 3. 5. 6-7 or Judith 13:18-19)

R: The Lord will remember his covenant forever.

1 I will give thanks to the Lord with all my heart in the company and assembly of the just. 2 Great are the works of the Lord, exquisite in all their delights. (R)

5 He has given food to those who fear him; he will forever be mindful of his covenant. 6 He has made known to his people the power of his works, giving them the inheritance of the nations. (R)

9 He has sent deliverance to his people; he has ratified his covenant forever; holy and awesome is his name. 10 His praise endures forever. (R)

Gospel | Mark 10:17-27 (or John 19:25-27 or John 19:25-34)

Reflection
Jesus tells the rich young man that his wealth will not bring him ultimate joy and satisfaction—only a life of discipleship can. Let us remember this as we navigate our temporary, comfortable lives on earth. There is so much more awaiting us in eternal life in heaven.

Gospel Acclamation

Jesus Christ became poor although he was rich, so that by his poverty you might become rich.

17 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19 You know the commandments: You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.” 20 He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22 At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the Kingdom of God!” 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. So, Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.” 26 They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “For men it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.”

𝑯𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝑩𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒚 𝑴𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒄𝒉! ❤️

Today we celebrate the 1993rd birthday of the Catholic Church — a Church founded by Christ and strengthened by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. For almost two millennia, the Church has continued to spread the Gospel, celebrate the Sacraments, and guide millions of faithful around the world.

Happy Birthday to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church! May we continue to live our faith with love, humility, and obedience to God. Through every generation, Christ remains the heart of His Church. ❤️🙏

Come, Holy Spirit, and renew the face of the earth, through Your Church! 🔥

𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐌𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 | PENTECOST SUNDAY (May 24)

Today, exactly fifty days after Easter, we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. This is the moment the Holy Spirit came down upon the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Upper Room. Often called the "Birthday of the Church," Pentecost marks the exact day the Church's public mission began. With the sound of a rushing wind and tongues of fire, the Holy Spirit completely transformed a group of frightened disciples into bold witnesses, giving them the courage to step out and preach the Gospel to the world.

Pentecost is the fulfillment of Jesus' promise to send us an Advocate to guide, strengthen, and sanctify us until the end of time. This feast is also deeply personal for all of us—the same Spirit given to the early Church is sealed within us through our Baptism and Confirmation.

Just like Mary, who sat and prayed with the disciples at the very first Pentecost, let's open our hearts to the fire of the Holy Spirit and renew our passion to share Christ's love with everyone around us.

PENTECOST SUNDAY

First Reading | Acts 2:1-11

Reflection
The coming of the Holy Spirit is truly a watershed moment in the life of the Church, and so begins the promise of empowering all men and women to live and proclaim the Gospel. Before, the empowerment of the Holy Spirit was seen to be reserved for the leaders of God’s people—the prophets, judges, kings, and others. Under the Gospel, the Holy Spirit is given to all.

1 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. 2 And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. 3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. 5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. 6 At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language? 9 We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, 11 both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”

Responsorial Psalm | Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34

R: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God, you are great indeed! 24 How manifold are your works, O Lord! the earth is full of your creatures. (R)

29 If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. 30 When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. (R)

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord be glad in his works! 34 Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the Lord. (R)

Second Reading | 1 Corinthians 12:3-7, 12-13

Reflection
3 Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; 5 there are different forms of service but the same Lord; 6 there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. 7 To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. 12 As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. 13 For in one Spirit, we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit.

Gospel | John 20:19-23

Reflection
In the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus commissions His disciples when He ascends into heaven. In John’s Gospel, this happens during the resurrection appearances. Even though the order of events vary, what matters is that we are commissioned to take the Gospels to the ends of the earth.

Gospel Acclamation

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

First Reading | Acts 28:16-20, 30-31

Reflection
Paul was first jailed in Rome and then he was placed under house arrest. These restrictions do not stop him from preaching to his jailors and entertaining visitors from the various communities that he had founded. Paul continued to preach the Gospel until he died. I am sure he continues to intercede for the Church today. Let us pray to have Paul’s relentless spirit as we love God and His will.

16 When he entered Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with the soldier who was guarding him. 17 Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered, he said to them, “My brothers, although I had done nothing against our people or our ancestral customs, I was handed over to the Romans as a prisoner from Jerusalem. 18 After trying my case the Romans wanted to release me, because they found nothing against me deserving the death penalty. 19 But when the Jews objected, I was obliged to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no accusation to make against my own nation. 20 This is the reason, then, I have requested to see you and to speak with you, for it is on account of the hope of Israel that I wear these chains.” 30 He remained for two full years in his lodgings. He received all who came to him, 31 and with complete assurance and without hindrance he proclaimed the Kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Responsorial Psalm | Psalm 11:4, 5, 7

R: The just will gaze on your face, O Lord.

4 The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven. His eyes behold, his searching glance is on mankind. (R)

5 The Lord searches the just and the wicked; the lover of violence he hates. 7 For the Lord is just, he loves just deeds; the upright shall see his face. (R)

Gospel | John 21:20-25

Reflection
It seems this Gospel affirms a link to one of the Apostles as its basis—John. How this Gospel, along with all the writings of Scripture, was originally written and compiled is lost to history. Yet, we can trust that the truths necessary for our salvation are all contained in the Scriptures.

Gospel Acclamation

I will send to you the Spirit of truth, says the Lord; he will guide you to all truth.

20 Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, “Master, who is the one who will betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me.” 23 So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?” 24 It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. 25 There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.

𝐌𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐋 | SAINT RITA OF CASCIA (May 22)

Saint Rita was born in 1386 in Roccaparena, Umbria, She was married at the age of 12 to a violent and ill-tempered husband. He was murdered 18 years later and she forgave his murderers, praying that her twin sons, who had sworn to avenge their father’s death may also forgive. She was granted this grace, and her sons, who died young, died reconciled to God.

The saint heard the call to become a nun in the Augustinian convent at Cascia, but was refused entry at first. She asked the intercession of Saints Augustine, Mary Magadalene and John the Baptist and was finally allowed to enter the convent where she lived the last 40 years of her life in prayer, mortification and service to the people of Cascia.

For the last 15 years of her life she received a stigmata-like thorn wound in answer to her prayers to be more profoundly conformed to the passion of the Lord Jesus. Rita was bedridden for the last four years of her life, consuming almost nothing except for the Eucharist. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 70 on May 22, 1456.

Saint Rita was canonized in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII. She is the patron saint of impossible causes, sterility, abuse victims, loneliness, marriage difficulties, parenthood, widows, the sick, bodily ills and wounds.

First Reading | Acts 25:13-21

Reflection
Often, more than one saint shares a feast day, seemingly competing for remembrance. Yet, as saints, each would undoubtedly defer to the others in humility. Let us constantly pray for this virtue, as it is central to our spiritual life. We can cultivate humility by choosing actions that draw the least attention to ourselves. There is a great cost to achieving sainthood—are we ready to pay the price?

13 King Agrippa and Bernice arrived in Caesarea on a visit to Festus. 14 Since they spent several days there, Festus referred Paul’s case to the king, saying, “There is a man here left in custody by Felix. 15 When I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews brought charges against him and demanded his condemnation. 16 I answered them that it was not Roman practice to hand over an accused person before he has faced his accusers and had the opportunity to defend himself against their charge. 17 So when they came together here, I made no delay; the next day I took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought in. 18 His accusers stood around him, but did not charge him with any of the crimes I suspected. 19 Instead they had some issues with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus who had died but who Paul claimed was alive. 20 Since I was at a loss how to investigate this controversy, I asked if he were willing to go to Jerusalem and there stand trial on these charges. 21 And when Paul appealed that he be held in custody for the Emperor’s decision, I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar.”

Responsorial Psalm | Psalm 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20

R: The Lord has established his throne in heaven.

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all my being, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. (R)

11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he put our transgressions from us. (R)

19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. 20 Bless the Lord, all you his angels, you mighty in strength, who do his bidding. (R)

Gospel | John 21:15-19

Reflection
With a commitment to love, Peter responds to the same question Jesus asks him. Each time, Jesus entrusts him with the care of the flock—the fledgling Christian Church. Saint Peter remains the longest-serving pope, with a tenure of about thirty-four years. Only a few have come close, all within the last couple of centuries, the most recent being St. John Paul II, who served for twenty-eight years.

Gospel Acclamation

The Holy Spirit will teach you everything and remind you of all I told you.

15 After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them, he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He then said to Simon Peter a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”
