In August 1988, Word of Hope Christian Family Church held its first worship service at Paramount Building. With an initial attendance of 150 people, the church was led by Dr. David Abe Sobrepeña. Within its first year, church attendance grew to 2,000 people, but Sobrepeña's mission began even prior to this turnout.

Sobrepeña, then working in the finance sector in the United States, witnessed the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution in the Philippines from afar. While monitoring events back home, it was then inculcated in his heart that his calling was to return to the Philippines and be involved in the ministry, a calling that previously defined the careers of his father and his grandfather. For a year, Sobrepeña waited for his application in the foreign missions department of the Assemblies of God, but was eventually rejected. A subsequent missionary trip to the Philippines, however, opened up the opportunity for him to begin a church, thus his move to rent a 1,400-seater space in the Paramount Building, home of the Roman Catholic media station Radio Veritas (DZRV). After some time, the church was informed that the building could no longer accommodate them, prompting their move to the present location of their main building across SM City North EDSA by 1993. The main campus has a reported seating capacity of 6,500, making it one of the largest places of worship in the Philippines.

According to Bishop Sobrepeña, "Faith is walking on water. Faith is doing God's work when there is no visible means for financial support, and there is no way you can honestly get the job done. You just do it."

To date, Word of Hope has 39 satellite churches and over 8,000 Life Groups (or small groups) within Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces. The church likewise plans to establish 35 more congregations. Through the years, the church has contributed to over 150,000 decisions to accept Jesus Christ, and with EQUIP Philippines*, has helped train more than 400,000 leaders in the Philippines and across Asia.

Bishop Sobrepeña also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Philipine Council of Evangelical Churches (PCEC), an Evangelical union of over 55,000 congregations in the Philippines. According to the Social Weather Stations (SWS), Evangelicals constitute 4.1 percent of the adult Filipino population in 2021, while the 2020 Philippine Census had Evangelicals form 5.1 percent of the total population, the third (3rd) largest religious affiliation after Roman Catholics (78.8 percent), and Muslims (6.4 percent). Being affiliated with the Assemblies of God, Sobrepeña serves as the General Superintendent of the Philippines General Council of the Assemblies of God (PGCAG), which according to the 2020 Philippine Census has over 413,000 adherents.

In terms of social responsibility, the church has likewise entered into various sectors of society, including education (with Hope Christian Academy), health (with Hope General Hospital), disaster response (Operation Hope), ministry development (with Hope Leadership Institute), and prayer life (with Paradise Prayer Garden).
