Madawgan nga kurawon!

Shri Vishayas and Green Papaya would like to thank the Panay Bukidnon elders and cultural masters in Garangan for their support and cooperation.

Thank you also to Artangel and friends for your contributions.

Madawgan nga kurawon is a Karay-a archaic language for “thank you very much.”

The Time When Our World Began
(Ang Tion Sang Nagsugod ang Amon Kalibutan)

Together with selected art residency platforms from around the world, Green Papaya Art Projects joins EARTH RISING: Messages from the Pale Blue Dot organized and curated by Artangel (UK) with The Time When Our World Began. EARTH RISING is a digital broadcast of new audio and digital works by artists, poets, writers and musicians. With the theme “how does one go about reintroducing humanity to itself?”

EARTH RISING is inspired by the Golden Record, which was launched into the solar system in 1977. It was an audio/visual time capsule of Earth, presenting carefully selected sounds and images to other life forms across space. EARTH RISING keeps its intentions on the ground, exploring the complexity and depth of what it means to be human.

A concept album in which artists, writers, poets and musicians hold a mirror to humanity. Comprised of three volumes, EARTH RISING: Messages from the Pale Blue Dot presents a cross-section of the human experience. The album consists of new audio works that express our boundless imagination and longing to connect, our contradictions and compromises, and the enduring will to survive, and create meaning in precarious times. Volume I is released across digital platforms today, June 20, 2025.

Volume II of the album, to be released at a later date, will carry the audio version of The Time When Our World Began, currenty a work-in-progress. The title is a line lifted from the opening chant of Tarangban (Enchanted Island), Episode 1 of Hinilawod. Hinilawod is one of the longest epic poems of Panay Bukidnon, the indigenous people living in the interior mountains of Panay Island in the Philippines. The Time When Our World Began is a testimony to the Panay Bukidnon’s self determination to save their dying traditions and keep their culture alive.

Our deepest gratitude to the Panay Bukidnon elders, cultural masters and community in Garangan (Calinog, Iloilo) for their support.

HAPPY GRADUATION DAY!

Congratulations to the B.S. Architecture graduates of the Capiz State University College of Architecture! It has been an enjoyable and fulfilling experience learning with you the last three years.

Future rural architecture is yet to come. Bring your practice to the grassroots where it is lacking. Future architecture will make a village a better place to live in.

GREEN PAPAYA ART PROJECTS
STATEMENT OF GRATITUDE

Green Papaya Art Projects, Norberto Roldan, and one of its programs, the Shri Vishayas Project, were incriminated in a Panay Indigenous Peoples Organization Board Resolution in 2024 for violating protocols during the conduct of research and fieldwork in indigenous communities in Iloilo and Capiz.

Having admitted its failure to fully satisfy the Council of Elders’ requirement during its fieldwork in 2022-2023, and during its preparation for the anniversary of the Hugan-an Hinilawod Recording in 2024 due to misunderstanding and lack of communication, Norberto Roldan and Olive Gloria, Green Papaya’s artistic director and program director respectively, sought to have a dialogue with Mr. Renato Casinao, president of Panay Indigenous Peoples Organization and cluster head of National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)—Sub-commission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts (SCCTA) on May 7, 2025 at the Municipal Hall of Calinog, Province of Iloilo. It should be noted that this dialogue was preceded by a meeting on June 16, 2024 with Mr, Rafe Laluma, the IPMR (Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative) in Capiz, facilitated by Mr. Al Tesoro, head of the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO) of the Province of Capiz.

Green Papaya wishes to express its deep appreciation and gratitude to the Panay Indigenous Peoples Organization for having been given the opportunity to establish a more meaningful and fruitful relationship with the IP communities in Iloilo and Capiz. Moving forward, we hope that with the guidance and support of the Council of Elders, Green Papaya and its affiliate programs will be able to build a stronger and closer connection with the Panay Bukidnon.
