I AM A CATHOLIC & MY RELIGION WORKS FOR ME. Anya (my 10-year old niece): Tita Mans, are you a hardline Catholic? Me: (I cannot remember what my answer was coz my mind was focused on my amazement of the term "hardline Catholic" used by my young niece. Where do they get such?) Yes, my religion makes me happy, what before were strange rituals & terminologies (sacraments, paschal mystery, salvation, concupiscence, reify, etc.)- these I have found in my life and can therefore explain it in layman/women's term. Now I see its meaning and beauty. Touching statues, praying the rosary, novena, reading lives of saints...make me know more Jesus & deepen my faith in him. But I will not die if I do not go to Mass everyday or leave someone in need because it's time for my evening prayer & thank God I am not afraid anymore of "gaba" (curse) if I criticize priests. I believe in a forgiving, merciful & broadminded God who is beyond all my Catholic rituals & traditions because Buddhists, Muslims and aetheists are his children, too. This is why I am happy with a Pope who washes the feet of women, Muslims and sinners. Hardline Catholic? Am more comfortable to being a progressive Catholic who is at peace with both the humanity & divinity of the Church.

AT THE TWILIGHT OF CHANGE...Many things are happening now in PCLM especially in this our 40th Anniv. For one, we are considering its membership. Who can be a member of PCLM?, we asked. I realized this in my conversation with a lady who claimed she has a track record of assisting in 13 Church Talks in Metro Manila. She comes regularly for our Mission Sharing and she was present last March 5, 2017 for our 40th Anniv. So I asked her, "What attracts you to PCLM?" Her reply made me happy because it was an affirmation and a confirmation. "There is no one above or below you. You are on an equal level. Also, it's easy to enter your community." Well, I think she also means physically because we were talking at our dining table. Even if she's not a lay missioner she is so familiar with us and is welcome to enter this part of our home. Our director has been mentioning about PCLM associates to us and it made me think - Why not? They are those who for one reason or another cannot go to field mission but whose hearts are with us. Sort of a 3rd order they say. Just to think about...

WHO CELEBRATED WITH US - PCLM 40TH ANNIVERSARY HERE IN DAVAO!

LIFE BEGINS AT 40. It was on March 1, 1977 when in a meeting the Maryknoll priest missionaries assigned to the then Prelature of Tagum which included Davao del Norte & Davao Oriental in the island of Mindanao, Philippines decided to start a program which they called Philippine Lay Mission Program or PLMP. Bob Nugent at that time a Maryknoll priest took on the job. Incidentally, the MARYKNOLL MISSIONARIES started the BECs in the Philippines. Forty years later here we are - now renamed PHILIPPINE CATHOLIC LAY MISSION - TRULY LAY, FULLY FILIPINO & MISSIONARY TO ALL. On March 5, 2017, we - 20 of us active lay missioners - commemorated the founding anniversary of PCLM with the 10:00 a.m. Mass at the Manila Cathedral followed by a sumptuous lunch at the Villa Immaculada just at the back of the cathedral in Intramuros, Manila which we shared with sponsors, families & friends. Thank you for your presence & prayers. We look forward to a REBIRTHING OF PCLM as we continue to JOURNEY WITH THE BECs IN THE PHILIPPINES & ASIA.
