"What better day is there to make your final vows and prayer of total self-entrusting (paubaya) to God than on the eve of the Solemnity of San Jose! So at this special Mass, my prayer for you, Jomari, is this. Through God’s overflowing grace, may you learn as a Jesuit to be truly accommodating, hospitable, open and welcoming to all the people you serve and to our Lord himself, just like San Jose, the man with an uncluttered heart, who always left much sacred space for others and for God in his life." - Ramon Ma. L. Bautista, SJ

At today’s Mass on the eve of the Solemnity of St Joseph and in which Jomari will pronounce final vows in the Society, I am reminded of Hospicio de San Jose, an institution in Manila run by the Daughters of Charity (or DC sisters). It is a very special home for orphans, abandoned babies, children,...

"So, it is possible for us to help make our democratic institutions work to serve our children. But it is not easy. We have to leave our comfort zones and go down from the hill and encounter our people and their many problems. We have to learn to work together with unfamiliar people and institutions. We have to persist and persevere.

What will give us the will and persistence to go through all that trouble? Friends ask me what keeps me going, why I persist. I say, “I look into the eyes of our children and see their hopes and dreams. I pray we do not fail them.” In his little book written during the pandemic, Let us Dream, Pope Francis tells us that we have to “become a people.” To encounter one another, rich and poor, share stories and experiences as we work together to solve our problems and build a better future for our children.

We have to face the corrupt who use our democratic institutions for their own selfish ends. We have to fight evil. We must also build the good." - Bienvenido F. Nebres, SJ

We come together to remember EDSA. Even after 40 years, the memories remain fresh and vivid for us who lived through those wondrous days. I remember our courage before the tanks on Ortigas (real tanks, not Armored Personnel Vehicles). Young women went up to the serious, unsmiling soldiers and placed...

The latest issue of The Windhover: The Philippine Jesuit Magazine is now out!

The Chinese-Filipino Apostolate explores the rich intersection of faith, culture, identity, and mission in the Chinese-Filipino community.

The Jesuit apostolate in the Chinese-Filipino community spans schools, parishes, and various pastoral ministries that nurture faith, education, and service. Through these institutions, Jesuits accompany families and young people in forming both character and Christian discipleship. A key dimension of this mission is a deep respect for culture—valuing the rich heritage of both Chinese and Filipino traditions and engaging them as meaningful paths for expressing the Gospel. In this way, faith is lived and celebrated within the life of the community.

In this issue:
• Learning to Encounter — Irvin Jezz Lambojon
• Tending the Ground — Justin Chua
• Building Bridges — Ari Dy, SJ
• The Changing Face of the Chinese-Filipino Community — Ruby G. Lim
• The Jesuits and the Chinese-Filipino Apostolate in Cebu — Rhoderick John S. Abellanosa
• Jesuit Education and the Formation of Chinese-Filipino Leaders — Rhoderick John S. Abellanosa
• The Jesuit Formation of a Chinese-Filipino Student — Alfonso Vincent C. Chopitea
• Letting My Light Shine — Riley Ti
• 100% Chinese and 100% Filipino — Lance Kenzo Ho Posadas
• How Jesuit Education Shaped My Chinese-Filipino Identity — Sidney Rose Taparan & Chiara Anya Asuncion
• A Pilgrimage of Becoming — Eric Joseph C. Bernasor
• Walking with the Youth — Juan Genaro Santos
• The Greatest Gift of my Jesuit Education — Rudy Ang
• A Small Seed and A Small Yes — Nelson L. Yu

Available now. Discover stories of faith, identity, and mission that continue to build bridges across cultures.

Loving and merciful God,
we entrust to Your eternal care Your servant, Pope Francis,
whom You called to shepherd Your Church with humility, courage, and joy.
On this first anniversary of his passing,
we remember with gratitude his witness to the Gospel—
his love for the poor, his call to mercy,
and his tireless invitation to walk together as one people in faith.

Grant him, O Lord, the fullness of Your light and peace.
Welcome him into the company of the saints,
where every tear is wiped away and love endures forever.
May the seeds he has sown in the life of the Church
continue to bear fruit in justice, compassion, and communion.
Strengthen us, Your pilgrim Church on earth,
that we may carry forward his vision with fidelity and hope.
Teach us to listen deeply, to serve generously,
and to proclaim Christ with renewed zeal in our time. Amen.

Sch. Jun Nato, SJ spent two years in Vietnam, generously serving in the formation of Jesuit candidates and novices. Immersed in a new mission, he learned the language, embraced the culture, and opened his heart to a different way of life—all in response to God’s call.

His journey reflects the Jesuit spirit of being sent: ready to cross borders, face new challenges, and discover God in every place and people. For Sch. Jun, each unfamiliar path became an invitation to follow Christ more closely and to serve His universal Church wherever he may be needed.

Now back in Manila, he prepares for another step in his formation as he heads to Rome to study theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University.

Jesuit novices assigned in the newly established mission station in Tikalaan, Bukidnon went to a mass in Sitio Piglacugan. Part of the novitiate formation are the "experiments" which are meant to live out and to "experiment", as it were, the fruits of the novice's prayer experience during the 30-day long retreat. This also helps the novice to become grounded in the realities of the Jesuit mission and of the people to whom they will eventually minister and preach the good news.

Let us pray that they will be safe and have a fruitful experience!

May your people exult for ever, O God,
in renewed youthfulness of spirit,
so that, rejoicing now in the restored glory of our adoption,
we may look forward in confident hope
to the rejoicing of the day of resurrection.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales Visits New Bilibid Prison, Affirms Hope and Second Chances

On April 18, 2026, the Philippine Jesuit Prison Service Foundation, Inc. joined the Bureau of Corrections in welcoming former Ombudsman and retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales during her visit to the Medium Security Camp of the New Bilibid Prison.

Her visit was a powerful reminder that Persons Deprived of Liberty are seen, remembered, and valued.

BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. highlighted education as a vital path to transformation, while University of Perpetual Help System DALTA shared the success of its college and vocational programs for PDLs.

Representing PJPS, Fr. Erwin “Bok” Arandia, SJ shared the mission of the organization, founded in 1993 as a Jesuit ministry committed to restoring dignity, rekindling hope, and rebuilding lives behind and beyond prison walls.

Through socio-pastoral care, scholarship support for children of PDLs, PRL CARE, BaLAYA, and the Ex-Preso Coffee Project, PJPS continues to accompany prisoners, former inmates, and their families toward healing, reintegration, and new life.

PJPS also highlighted its partnership with San Miguel Foundation through food augmentation, SOAP, and GIVE JOY—bringing practical support and hope to PDL communities, especially during Christmas and difficult seasons.

Following the program, food packs donated by San Miguel were turned over to the Medium Security Camp.

In her message, Justice Carpio-Morales commended these reformation efforts and encouraged PDLs to continue believing in change, growth, and the possibility of a better future.

Because justice is not only about punishment—it is also about restoration.

Habang may pag-asa, may buhay!
