Sulong–Padayon: Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish Charts a Mission-Driven Future

On November 22–23, 2025, more than forty leaders of Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish traveled to the peaceful surroundings of Boso-Boso Resort in Tanay for a two-day strategic planning workshop rooted in the Sulong-Padayon Synodal Implementation Framework. Far from a typical planning meeting, the gathering became a moment of communal discernment and an opportunity for the parish to dream, reflect, and commit to concrete pathways toward mission.

Representatives from the Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Council, ministries, lay organizations, movements, and associations all took part. The planning process was intentionally participative, honoring one of the deepest convictions of Sulong-Padayon: that the Church becomes more missionary when the People of God walk, listen, and decide together.

Using Sulong-Padayon as a Pathway to Mission

The Sulong-Padayon framework (Tinig-Tawag, Tawid-Tanaw, Tapak-Tindig, Tipan) guided the entire planning process. Leaders first listened to the “tinig” of the parish: its strengths, wounds, hopes, and challenges. They discerned God’s “tawag” in the voices of the faithful. Through honest conversations, prayer, and shared reflection, the group crossed toward new “tawid” insights that opened their hearts to the conversions needed for the parish to become more synodal and more missionary.

From there, they articulated their “tanaw”: a shared dream for the parish’s future. This dream took shape through discussion, prayerful silence, and small-group collaboration. The final stage (Tapak and Tindig) invited the leaders to outline initial pathways and commit personally to the mission ahead.

Three Strategic Goals for the Next Three Years

After two days of communal discernment, the parish reached consensus on three mission-centered strategic goals that will guide Sto. Tomas de Villanueva for the next three years:
1. Formation Towards Conversion and Mission
“We dream of a Church where formation is lifelong, rooted in Christ, and alive with mission, a Church that teaches not only doctrines but also how to love.”

The parish envisions a formation program that is integral, community-based, and truly missionary that forms disciples who serve with joy and compassion.

2. Accountable and Collaborative Leadership / Governance Structure
“We dream of a Church led by servant-leaders where authority is not a privilege, but a responsibility shared in trust.”

Leaders affirmed the call for transparent processes, shared decision-making, and structures that invite genuine co-responsibility among clergy and laity.

3. Inclusive Participation ( BECs, Grassroots, Marginalized Sectors)
“We dream of a Church where everyone belongs, and no one is invisible.”

Echoing the heart of synodality, the parish recognizes the need to strengthen BECs, expand engagement with families and youth, and ensure the meaningful inclusion of the poor, the overlooked, and the marginalized.

Next Steps: Turning Dreams into a SMART 3-Year Plan

The initial results of the planning session will now return to the parish groups that volunteered to champion each strategic goal. Their next task: to craft SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) three-year plans that translate the parish’s dreams into concrete actions, timelines, and indicators of success.

What began as a retreat-like gathering has become a renewed covenant and a commitment to build a parish that listens, serves, includes, and accompanies. Through Sulong-Padayon, Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Parish is not just planning for the future; it is walking together toward a more synodal, more missionary Church.

San Pablo Diocese's Stewardship General Assembly

More than 300 parish leaders from all over the Diocese of San Pablo gathered on October 25, 2025, at the Liceo de San Pablo Gymnasium for the Spirituality of Stewardship Parish Practitioners’ Gathering. The event carried the theme, “An Ongoing Formation: Refocusing on the Sustainability of the Spirituality of Stewardship in the Diocese.” It aimed to renew the delegates’ commitment to living stewardship as a way of life and to strengthen the mission of stewardship across parishes.

The gathering opened with remarks from Fr. Noel Conopio, the Diocesan Stewardship Director. He welcomed the large crowd of participants and explained that the assembly was not just a meeting but an opportunity to reaffirm their identity as stewards of God’s gifts. He reminded everyone that stewardship involves a lifelong process of formation and action, guided by gratitude and responsibility toward God and the Church.

A video message from Bishop Broderick Pabillo, Chair of the CBCP Episcopal Office on Stewardship, followed. Bishop Pabillo emphasized that stewardship is not simply an activity or project but a way of life. Everything we have—our life, time, talents, and treasures—comes from God and must be used with gratitude, trust, and love. He explained that sustainable stewardship stands on three main pillars: formation (ongoing spiritual growth through prayer and the sacraments), community (mutual support and collaboration), and witness (living out one’s faith through service and generosity).

Jose Luis Clemente of the CBCP Office on Stewardship presented a talk titled “Sustainability of Stewardship.” He explained how stewardship should move beyond programs and fundraising efforts to become a lasting identity and habit rooted in faith. He identified four key pillars that sustain stewardship in parishes: formation, leadership, culture, and accountability. These ensure that stewardship remains alive through continuous spiritual growth, servant leadership, supportive parish culture, and responsible use of resources.

Clemente also discussed the dynamics of renewal, stressing that the Church must go through an ongoing cycle of formation, practice, evaluation, and deeper renewal. He pointed out common signs of decline such as lack of formation, burnout among leaders, distrust, and the absence of youth involvement. He urged the participants to address these issues directly. True sustainability, he said, happens when stewardship is passed on from one generation to the next.

The program also featured video messages from Mrs. Mila Glodava and Fr. Andrew Kemberling from the United States, both sharing their experiences in promoting stewardship. Local parishes showcased short videos presenting their own stewardship practices. Bishop Junie Maralit of the Diocese of San Pablo encouraged everyone to continue building stewardship-based communities rooted in gratitude and service. The event ended with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Martin Puertollano of Boac, Marinduque, reminding all that the heart of stewardship begins and ends in the grace of God.
