A century ago, through a Pontifical Decree, the images of Nuestra Seรฑora de Santo Rosario de Manaoag and the Niรฑo Jesus were canonically crownedโ€”an enduring testament to the powerful intercession of Apo Baket for her children.

Mother Earth Foundation expresses grave concern over the fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill (NSLF) in Barangay Tanza 2, which broke out on April 10 despite the site being declared non-operational since August 2025. The incident has already severely affected air quality across parts of Metro Manila, exposing communities to hazardous smoke.

The burning of waste, especially plastics and mixed materials, releases toxic pollutants such as fine particulate matter, dioxins, and other harmful substances. These toxins pose serious risks to public health, particularly for children, the elderly, and vulnerable communities. And as persistent organic pollutants, they threaten to contaminate the surrounding soil and water long after the flames are extinguished.

Beyond its immediate health impacts, this incident also reflects a deeper environmental and climate concern. Landfills are significant sources of methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than carbon dioxide in driving global warming. When fires occur, they release not only additional carbon emissions but also toxic pollutants that worsen both air quality and climate vulnerability. This highlights how mismanaged waste systems directly contribute to the climate crisis and reinforces the urgent need for systemic reform.

We call attention to the apparent lapses in landfill closure and management by Philippine Ecology Systems Corporation, as reports indicate that required closure processes were left incomplete, leaving large volumes of waste exposed and unmanaged. This situation underscores the urgent need for strict enforcement of Republic Act 9003 and the Clean Air Act, as well as immediate accountability for the responsible parties.

More importantly, this is a clear wake-up call to move beyond landfill dependence and fast-track the shift to - and investment in -zero waste systems. This transition requires an urgent commitment that prioritizes waste prevention at the source and enforce strict segregation across all sectors. We must institutionalize decentralized collection through the integration of trained waste workers and Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs), while fully operationalizing efficient organics management and recycling as the essential foundations of a sustainable, climate-resilient waste strategy.

Change is possible when we act together. Let us demand better systems, support community solutions, and push for a future built on zero waste.

MABUHAY, INAโ€™N MARIA!
MABUHAY, APO BAKET!
MABUHAY, INA NG MANAOAG!

The friars of the Dominican Province of the Philippines celebrates the Centennial Celebration of the Canonical Coronation of the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag, Pangasinan - a hundred years of grace, devotion, and maternal protection.

One hundred years ago, through the authority of the Holy See and the loving faith of countless devotees, the image of our Blessed Mother was solemnly crowned as Queen and Mother of her faithful children. Generations of pilgrims have journeyed to her shrine in Manaoag seeking comfort, healing, guidance, thanksgiving, and hope.

This centennial celebration is not only a remembrance of a historic event, but a joyful proclamation that the love of Mary continues to reign in the hearts of her people. She remains the compassionate Mother who calls her children closer to Christ, her Son.

From every province, parish, and family devoted to her holy name, we raise our voices in gratitude for the blessings received through the years. In times of trial and triumph, she has been a refuge and intercessor for the Filipino faithful and for all who come to her sacred home.

As we honor this milestone, may we renew our devotion to the Holy Rosary, deepen our faith in Her Son, Jesus Christ, and imitate the humility, obedience, and charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

MABUHAY ANG REYNA NG MANAOAG!

On this day, 21 April, we remember the death anniversary of Pope Francis, a shepherd who tirelessly called the world to peace, justice, and care for our common home. His prophetic voice challenged systems of violence and indifference, reminding humanity that war is a failure of our shared humanity. As we honor his life and legacy, we stand in continuity with his mission, alongside Pope Leo XIV, in calling for an end to war, the silencing of weapons, and the urgent pursuit of dialogue and reconciliation among nations.

Inspired by his landmark encyclical Laudato Siโ€™, we recall: โ€œPeace, justice and the preservation of creation are three absolutely interconnected themesโ€ (LS 92). Pope Francis taught us that care for people and care for the Earth cannot be separated, and that lasting peace can only be built on justice, dignity, and solidarity. On this anniversary, we renew our commitment to his visionโ€”standing for life, defending our common home, and working together for a world where peace may truly flourish.

โ€œThe brothers and sisters of the Order of Preachers renew our unwavering commitment to the cause of peace. In a world torn by conflict and division, the Order will continue to labor for reconciliation led by Pope Leo XIV and to advance dialogue guided by the light of truth and the Gospel. Let us never tire of proclaiming the peace of the Risen Christ together.โ€

- fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner III
Master of the Order of Preachers

UPDATE: This is the full and exact quote of Pope Leo, delivered in English to journalists aboard his flight to Algeria.

"I have no fear of neither the Trump administration nor of speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel. And thatโ€™s what I believe I am called to do and what the Church is called to do. We're not politicians. We're not looking to make foreign policy, as he calls it, with the same perspective that he might understand it. But I do believe that the message of the Gospel, โ€œblessed are the peacemakers,โ€ is a message that the world needs to hear today.โ€

Exhibit Details:
๐Ÿ—“ Dates: April 8โ€“20, 2026
๐Ÿ“Venue: Gallery Two, Arts and Design West Hall, College of Fine Arts
๐Ÿ•˜ Schedule: Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Please note that the gallery is closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. Plan your visit accordingly.

This exhibit is a spectral reconstruction of 1975 Bugsuk and the memories and struggles of Cagayanen, Molbog, and Palawโ€™an families from seven communities leading the long-standing resistance under the Sambilog - Balik Busuk Movement: Tagnato, Puring, Buliluyan, Marihangin, Pandanan, Bugsuk, and Sebaring. The photographs will visually articulate how the fight to reclaim ancestral domain is intrinsically woven into the communitiesโ€™ everyday existence and cultural identity. The project aims to counter corporate misinformation by providing authentic, community-driven documentation.

Fair Finance Philippines (FFPh) is conducting a divestment campaign to oppose the ongoing commercial developments in Barangay Bugsuk, Balabac, Southern Palawan. FFPh supports the call of Sitio Marihangin residents for corporations and financial institutions to divest from harmful projects that contribute to human rights violations and displacement of indigenous communities from their ancestral lands.

Admission is free. We look forward to welcoming you.
