Almighty, eternal, just and merciful God,
look with mercy upon my Brother Noe Roxas, OFMCap. give him to do for your sake alone what he knows you wish of him and grant him always to desire what is pleasing to you, so that cleansed, enlightened and inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit he may always follow the footsteps of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and by your grace alone, may he come to you, O Most High, who in perfect Trinity and simple unity, live and reign and are glorified God almighty through all ages. The Capuchin Preacher Who Saved Europe… and Inspired the Cappuccino! ☕🙏 Capuchin Friar | Peacemaker | Wonder-Worker

Born Carlo Domenico Cristofori in Aviano, Italy, in 1631, the young Marco was known as a shy dreamer. At age 17, he entered the Capuchin Novitiate, taking the name Marco. After spending nearly two decades in quiet prayer, humility, and obscurity, obedience called him to the ministry of preaching—and his life changed Europe forever.

✨ A Herald of Conversion & Miracle Worker
Everywhere Blessed Marco traveled across Europe, thousands gathered in town squares and churches to hear him preach. Known for his profound call to repentance, humility, and peace, his ministry was accompanied by extraordinary signs, healing blessings, and conversions.

⚔️ The Peacemaker at the Siege of Vienna (1683)
Appointed Apostolic Missionary and Papal Legate by Pope Blessed Innocent XI, Friar Marco became a trusted confidant and spiritual advisor to Emperor Leopold I. When Ottoman forces besieged Vienna in 1683, Marco was called to the imperial camp. He unified division-racked Christian leaders, inspired the troops (including King Jan III Sobieski of Poland), and led them in prayer before their historic victory.

According to popular tradition, after the Ottoman army retreated from Vienna, they left behind hundreds of bags of dark, bitter coffee. Finding the taste too strong, the imperial troops mixed the coffee with milk and honey to sweeten it on Blessed Marco's suggestion—or created the drink as a tribute to him! The creamy brown color matched the hue of the friar's Capuchin habit, leading locals to call the drink Kapuziner—giving birth to the Cappuccino we enjoy today!

🕊️ A Servant of Unity and Humility
Despite his vast influence among European courts and royalty, Marco shunned political ambition and personal honors. He spent his final years tirelessly reprimanding consciences, fighting sin, aiding the needy, and fostering peace across Europe until his death in 1699.

Cross-country travels, intense apostolic labor, and humility characterized his entire life. Pope Saint John Paul II beatified him on April 27, 2003, holding him up as an "outstanding herald of conversion and an apostle of communion."

A Sacred Gathering in Spirit and Fraternity at Our Lady of Lourdes Seminary

The Capuchin fraternity gathered with joyful hearts at Our Lady of Lourdes Seminary last Monday, August 10, 2026, for the celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit.

Our Minister Provincial, Br. Edgar S. Martinez, OFMCap, served as the main celebrant. Concelebrating the Eucharistic celebration were Br. Jeffrey Torres, OFMCap, Br. Franz Atienza, OFMCap, Br. Roque Aristotle Padama, OFMCap, Br. Jose Eduardo Mayo, OFMCap (Postulant Director), and Br. John Rey Baalan, OFMCap (Liturgy Professor).

The Eucharistic celebration brought together the full richness of our fraternity, with aspirants, postulants, Theology student-friars, and both lay and friar professors in attendance. We extend our deepest gratitude to our dear friends and benefactors. Your unfailing support, generosity, and prayers serve as a constant source of encouragement and sustenance in our shared Franciscan journey.

The celebration was made even more grace-filled by the Rite of the Ministry of Lectorate and Acolytate conferred upon our Post-Novitiate 1 friar-students: Br. Ignasius Rambaliku, OFMCap and Br. Samuel Kagl Kawagle, OFMCap from Papua New Guinea.

As we invoked the Paraclete at the start of this academic and formation year, we were reminded of the Holy Spirit's transforming presence:

The Advocate: As Jesus promised in John 14:26, the Holy Spirit stands beside us to teach, guide, and remind us of Christ's truth.

The Enabler: The Spirit empowers us to step into our vocations, bestowing diverse gifts for the building up of the Church (1 Corinthians 12:4-7).

The Creator of Being: From the dawn of creation, when the Spirit breathed life into creation (Genesis 1:2), to the vitalizing force that moves our souls (Acts 17:28), the Spirit continuously moves us into being and animates our daily lives.

Following the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the community shared a warm fraternal lunch, during which we joyfully celebrated the upcoming birthday of Br. Baltazar Benito, OFMCap.

May the Holy Spirit continue to enlighten, guide, and enkindle the hearts of our brothers and benefactors as we journey together in faith and service!

“Love Him totally who gave Himself totally for your love.” — Saint Clare of Assisi ✨

Today, August 11, the Church joyfully celebrates the Solemnity of Saint Clare of Assisi!

Foundress of the Poor Clares and a beloved companion of St. Francis, Clare turned her back on nobility, wealth, and earthly comfort to live a life of holy poverty, profound humility, and constant prayer. Through her unwavering devotion to the Holy Eucharist, she famously turned away invading soldiers simply by holding up the Blessed Sacrament—showing us that true strength lies in total trust in God.

Her life remains a glowing mirror of Christ’s love, humility, and peace in our world today.

Happy Feast Day to all the Poor Clare Sisters around the world! 🕊️

To the contemplative daughters of St. Clare who quietly hold the world up through silent prayer, perpetual adoration, and selfless sacrifice: thank you for your beautiful witness. May St. Clare intercede for you and fill your communities with joy, peace, and abundance!

THE JOYFUL FRIARS

As our Franciscan brothers and sisters celebrate the 800th Jubilee of the Transitus of St. Francis of Assisi, we offer this work as a simple gift of friendship from the Dominican family.

Inspired by the friendship and shared mission of St. Dominic and St. Francis, Br. Rheed Caturza, OP, imagined a joyful moment between these two great saints, not simply as preachers, founders, and men of profound holiness, but as brothers who could also share a moment of music, laughter, and joy.

What if Dominic and Francis had met more often?

What would they have done together?

Perhaps they would have prayed. Perhaps they would have spoken about Christ and the Gospel. And perhaps, after all that, they might simply have sat together and sung praises to God.

Blessed Agathangelus & Blessed Cassian, Capuchin Martyrs of Gondar ✝️

Today, August 7th, we remember two courageous Capuchin Franciscan friars whose deep zeal for Christian unity took them from France to the mission fields of Egypt and Ethiopia—ultimately laying down their lives for Christ.

Who Were They?

Blessed Agathangelus de Vendôme (1598–1638): Born François Noury, he became a Capuchin priest known for his tireless mission work in Syria, Lebanon, and Cairo, striving for reconciliation between Coptic and Catholic Christians.

Blessed Cassian de Nantes (1607–1638): Born Consalo Lopez-Netto, he dreamed of the missions from a young age. After selflessly ministering to plague victims in France, he joined Agathangelus in Egypt.

Their Heroic Martyrdom
In 1638, after entering Ethiopia to preach the gospel and foster church unity, both friars were falsely accused, arrested, and dragged to Gondar. When sentenced to death on August 7, 1638, the executioners realized they lacked ropes to hang them—so Agathangelus and Cassian willingly offered their own Franciscan waist cords (cinctures) for the gallows. They were then finished off by stoning, and witnesses reported a miraculous column of light over their tomb that very night.

They were beatified together by Pope St. Pius X in 1905.

Title: The Humble Doorkeeper Who Touched Thousands of Lives 🤎✨

Before he was known as Blessed Solanus Casey, he was Bernard "Barney" Casey—a farm boy from Wisconsin born to Irish immigrant parents in 1870.

Before answering God's call to the priesthood, Barney lived a full working-class life: he worked as a logger, a hospital orderly, a streetcar operator, and even a prison guard.

When he finally entered the seminary, he struggled immensely with his studies—particularly the German-language instruction. His superiors doubted his ability to succeed as a diocesan priest and suggested he join a religious order. Discerning what to do, he prayed a novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary and heard a gentle inner voice tell him: "Go to Detroit."

On Christmas Eve in 1896, he arrived at the Capuchin Franciscan monastery in Detroit.

Because of his academic struggles, he was ordained in 1904 as a "simplex priest"—meaning he was given restrictions and was not permitted to preach doctrinal sermons or hear confessions. Instead, he was assigned simple, humble tasks: sacristan, altar server director, and monastery doorkeeper (porter) in Yonkers, Manhattan, and Detroit.

What seemed like a limitation became his greatest ministry:

The Doorkeeper: At the monastery door, Fr. Solanus greeted every visitor with patience, warmth, and compassion.

The Healer & Counselor: People from all walks of life flooded the monastery to ask for his prayers. Countless remarkable cures and spiritual graces were attributed to his humble intercession.

His Life's Motto: "Thank God ahead of time." He taught a profound attitude of gratitude, encouraging people to trust God’s providence before they even saw the answer to their prayers.

He often remarked: "I have two loves: the sick and the poor."

Blessed Solanus Casey passed away on July 31, 1957, and was beatified in Detroit on November 18, 2017. His life is a beautiful reminder that God does not require us to hold grand titles to accomplish extraordinary things—only an open door and a humble heart.
