Gospel reflection on: Jn 14:15-21
In todayโs Gospel, Jesus says, โIf you love me, you will keep my commandments.โ At first, this may sound like a demand. But if we listen closely, Jesus is not asking for obedience out of fear. He is inviting us to love Him in a way that becomes visible.
Love for Jesus is not only shown through words, prayers, or emotions. It is shown through the way we live: how we forgive, how we serve, how we choose what is right even when it is difficult, and how we remain faithful even when no one is watching.
Jesus also promises that we will not be left alone. He says that the Father will send another Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to be with us always. This is a comforting message, especially when we feel tired, confused, or spiritually dry. The Holy Spirit is Godโs presence within usโguiding us, strengthening us, correcting us, and reminding us that we are not abandoned.
There are moments in life when following God feels hard. Sometimes we know what is right, but our emotions, pride, fear, or weakness pull us in another direction. But Jesus reminds us that obedience is possible because we are not doing it alone. The Holy Spirit helps us love better, choose better, and live better.
Jesus also says, โI will not leave you orphans.โ This is one of the most beautiful promises in the Gospel. God does not distance Himself from us when life becomes messy. He stays. He remains. He continues to love us, even when we are struggling to love Him back.
So this Gospel invites us to ask ourselves:
Do I truly love Jesus only with my words, or also with my choices?
Do I allow the Holy Spirit to guide my actions?
Do I trust that God is still with me, even in moments when I feel alone?
Today, Jesus reminds us that real love is faithful, obedient, and alive. And when we choose to love Him, we discover that He has already been loving us first.
