PHILIPPINE CARMEL TURNS 68: Today, March 16, we commemorate the 68th anniversary of the founding of the Philippine Carmelite Province of St. Titus Brandsma.

It was on this day in 1958 that the pioneering Dutch O.Carm. missionaries established their first community in Escalante, Negros Occidental — giving birth to Carmelite presence in the Philippines and bearing witness to Carmelite charism among the Filipino people.

As we mark this milestone, our hearts are filled with deep gratitude for the many ways God has shown His faithfulness to us through the years.

With unwavering trust in Divine Providence, may we continue to live out the spirit of Carmel in our communities, parishes and ministries, guided by the words of our holy father Elijah: "With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of hosts” (1 Kings 19:10).

On this anniversary, we invite all members of the Philippine Carmelite family to unite in prayer as one Province, with our hearts and voices joined together before God as we offer this intention:

"For the Philippine Carmelite Province of St. Titus Brandsma —
that the Lord may grant us the grace of prudent stewardship over our resources, that He may open new paths for our mission and apostolate, and that He may deepen in each of us the virtue of hope that anchors us in His providential love."

Halina't magdiwang at magpasalamat sa Panginoon! 🙏🏼

Relics of St. Titus Brandsma and San Isidro Labrador Enthroned in Bagong Silangan

Yesterday, March 12, Bishop Roberto O. Gaa, D.D., Bishop of Novaliches, likened the reception and enthronement of the relics of St. Titus Brandsma and San Isidro Labrador at the Parish of San Isidro Labrador in Bagong Silangan, Quezon City, to the “heartbeat of God.”

In his homily, the bishop clarified that relics are not objects of worship but serve as reminders of God’s presence through the lives of the saints. Like a heartbeat that sustains life, he said the relics inspire and invigorate the faithful, encouraging them to imitate the saints' holiness.

The ceremony was held to commemorate the 404th anniversary of the Canonization of San Isidro Labrador. After a motorcade and the Enthronement of the Relics, the Holy Eucharist was celebrated.

Joining Bishop Gaa were priests and brothers from the Philippine Carmelite Province, including Fr. Rico Ponce, O.Carm. representing the Prior Provincial Fr. Roberto Noel Rosas, O.Carm., as well as Fr. Billy B**g Manguiat, O.Carm., Fr. Emmanuel Vallega, O.Carm., Fr. Marjune Caloring, O.Carm., Fr. J***y Rebosquillo, O.Carm., and Br. Alvin Evangelista, O.Carm.

The relic of St. Titus Brandsma is “ex indumentis,” or a fragment of his clothing. In contrast, the relic of San Isidro Labrador is a “tetigit” or “touched” — meaning that this cloth was wrapped around his remains during the 2022 celebration of the 400th anniversary of his canonization.

The latter was donated by Jorge Matas Rubio, President of the Real Congregación de San Isidro de Naturales de Madrid, Spain.

Philippine Carmelites

The Carmelite Province of Blessed Titus Brandsma of the Philippines was canonically erected on July 16, 2013 thru a Decree of Canonical Er****on passed and approved by the Most Rev. Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm., the Prior General of the Order with his Council, dated and signed on March 25, 2013 at the Order’s General Curia in Rome.

The Province was founded by the Dutch Carmelites as they established its first mission community in Escalante, Negros Occidental in response to the invitation of Bishop Epifanio Surban of Dumaguete in 1957. March 16, 1958 marks the founding day of Philippine Carmel with its founders: Fr. Richard Vissers, O.Carm. (Prior), Fr. Wirenfried Viesters, O.Carm., Fr. Theodulf Vrakking, O.Carm. from the Dutch Carmel Province; and Fr. Fidelis Limcaco, O.Carm., a Filipino and member of the PCM Province joined the pioneering community. From then on, the Order continues to grow and expanded in the different dioceses of the country and got involved in various ministries and programs of the Church.

The Order is involved in different pastoral ministries of the Church in the Philippines and Papua New Guinea as the Carmelites administer seven parishes, a quasi-parish and one mission station in five dioceses; two colleges and three high schools in two dioceses; three centers of spirituality and hermitages, an academic institute of spirituality and media ministry based in Manila. The Carmelites are also involved in teaching and retreat ministry, youth ministry, JPIC and social action ministry, chaplaincy and assistance to the Carmelite Family in the different parts of the country. The Filipino Carmelites administer two parishes with its mission stations in the Diocese of Bereina and Archdiocese of Port of Moresby in Papa New Guinea aside from other diocesan appointments and tasks in formation, pastoral, communication and youth ministries.
