The devotion to Nuestra Seรฑora de Lourdes took deep root in the Philippines through the Capuchin Franciscan friars, who brought the Marian devotion from France to Manila in the late 19th century. In 1892, sculptor Manuel Flores carved the initial image of the Virgin. Two years later, in 1894, a second and larger image was crafted by Manuel Flores with the guidance of Fr. Antonio of Valenciaโthe majestic icon that now stands crowned above the altar at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Quezon City. Beyond its artistic heritage, this venerated image gained widespread public affection as a sanctuary of healing and spiritual refuge. Over generations, countless Filipino faithful have testified to remarkable miracles, physical healings, and answered prayers attributed to her intercession, particularly during times of war, illness, and crisis.
Recognizing the profound, enduring devotion of the Filipino people, Pope Francis issued a decree through the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in September 2019 granting the image a Pontifical Coronation. Originally scheduled to take place on May 2, 2020, the event was postponed due to the global pandemic and government lockdowns. The solemn Pontifical Coronation officially took place on August 22, 2020, placing the crown upon the image of Our Lady to Lourdes. Celebrated alongside the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, this historic distinction stands as the highest honor granted by the Catholic Church to a religious image, forever sealing her role as a beacon of hope, health, and maternal protection.
