CBCP NEWS | Tarlac bishop dies of cardiac arrest

The bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Tarlac for the past seven years died on Monday evening.

Bishop Enrique Macaraeg, 67, died in Pangasinan province’s Malasaqui town “from an apparent cardiac arrest”.

The news of his passing was relayed to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) by Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan.

The bishop was reportedly playing at a basketball tournament at his hometown when he collapsed on the court.

The Diocese of Tarlac has yet to issue a statement of this time.

Macaraeg was ordained priest for the Lingayen-Dagupan archdiocese in 1979.

Pope Francis appointed him bishop of Tarlac in 2016.

At the time of his death, he was chairman of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on the Laity.

Posting of campaign materials within the vicinity of the church (fence and gates included) is 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗧𝗟𝗬 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗛𝗜𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗗. This is in line with the guidelines issued by the Comelec, the Omnibus Election Code, and the Fair Elections Act. Most importantly, we must treat the church with utmost respect.
