Today we honor fathers, and our sermon took us to the story of the Prodigal Son. But really, it’s the story of a Father’s heart.

We talk a lot about the son who left. But Father’s Day is about the dad who stayed.

The son demanded his inheritance. He ran. He wasted. He hit rock bottom. And the whole time, the father was watching the road.

“While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” — Luke 15:20

That’s not normal father behavior in that culture. Fathers didn’t run. It was undignified. But love doesn’t care about dignity. Love runs.

To every man in our church: That’s the Father you’re called to reflect. Not perfect, but present. Not keeping score, but keeping watch. Not waiting for apologies, but ready with open arms.

And to everyone reading this: You have a Heavenly Father like that too. No matter how far you’ve run, how badly you’ve messed up, how long you’ve been gone — He’s still watching the road. He’s still running toward you.

Earthly fathers teach us what fatherhood looks like. But God the Father shows us what love really is. Patient. Sacrificial. Restoring.

Men, thank you for pointing your families to Him. When you forgive, when you wait, when you run toward your kids instead of away — you’re showing them the heart of God.

Happy Father’s Day. We honor you. And we praise the Good Father who taught us how to love like that.
