THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN IDOL & AN IMAGE
Many of our brother 'Christians' from other sect seem to think that we, Catholics, are idolaters. As they would always say, that we worship the idols through the sacred images. This is wrong. We do not worship the sacred images, we venerate them instead. Let it be known that veneration is different from adoration, veneration is given to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints, while adoration is given to God alone. And on top of that, we call the sacred images as sacramentals and not 'idols.'
An IDOL describes an object that represents a god, and is given divine honors (adoration). In short, the object is being worshipped because it is considered as god itself, and this is against our Catholic teachings.
On the other hand, an IMAGE is a representation of the external form of a person. Unlike idol, it does not receive adoration. As Catholics, we (must) know that our adoration is reserved for worship of God alone. Therefore, the sacred images we have in churches, homes, and other places are being venerated only.
Here is a wonderful quote from Saint Thomas Aquinas to sum things up. 😉
"Religious worship is not directed to image in themselves, considered as mere things, but under their distinctive aspect as images leading us to God incarnate. The movement toward the image does not terminate in it as image but tends toward whose image it is."
