Altar Servers of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish It was instituted, by the Church, as a sacramental participation in the order of deacon. Francis Xavier, Cardinal Newman, St. Paschal Baylon, St. Francis E. Fr.

History

There is no history actually written about altar boys or use of that name during the early days of the Church, except for the word acolyte (the one who follows; a companion). As preparatory steps to priesthood, an aspirant shall pass the following minor ranks of Holy Order: Tonsure, Porter, Lector, Exorcist, and Acolyte. Acolyte, therefore, is the highest of minor Orders, and whose chief

duties are to carry candles in procession, to light the candles on the altar, and to assist the priest in saying the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (although the acolyte is not necessary for the effect of the Mass to take place; only the priest and a witness are required). In 9th century, at the Synod of Mainz, a decree was passed that "every priest should have a cleric or boy to read the epistle or lesson, to answer him at mass, and with whom he can chant the psalms." This is a clear indication for the substitution of altar boys for minor clerics of acolyte dating back for more than 1,000 years. Since this privilege was granted, altar boys have had an active part in divine worship. There have been hundreds of thousands of these boys whose noblest common desire is to serve, glorify, and give honor to God. One fact stands out that from among these boy servers rose some of the great and famous Church figures, like St. Martin de Porres, and Pope St. Pius X.
[edit]In modern times
Although St. John Bosco gave the name Knights of the Altar, Fr. Benz was the first to formally organize and found the society for altar boys in 1938. Benz was a priest in the archdiocese of St. Paul, Minnesota, USA when Archbishop John G. Murray granted his approval to the organization which has these following objectives:
1.) To form a worthy guard of honor to our Divine Eucharistic King, in whose service we willingly assume the dignity and honor to become Knights of the Altar.
2.) To render faithful, reverent and edifying service to God by assisting his visible representatives, the Bishops and Priests, in offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and in all other liturgical and devotional functions.
3.) To enkindle greater piety and devotion in the hearts of the faithful of the congregation whom we represent at the altar, by reverently performing the duties of our holy office and by a good example in our daily lives.
4.) To foster vocation among members. In 1948, the Holy Cross Fathers of Notre Dame assumed the sponsorship with Fr. Frank Gartland, Fr. Thomas McNally, and Bro. James Lacrofka who were mainly responsible for the supervision of the organization and publication of Catholic Boy Magazine, an organ established also by Fr. Benz. Charles M. Kerins was the primary Cover Artist for Catholic Boy Magazine in the 1950s and 1960s. Kerins provided classical images of a contemporary boyhood. After the Vatican II, for some time in 1969, the magazine stopped circulation, and left a communication gap among its member units and knights. But providentially, in December 1970, Joseph DeSilvestro was designated as National Director, assisted by the Holy Cross Fathers as his advisers. From Notre Dame to Marseilles, then to Ottawa, Illinois, its office is now in Lakeland, Florida. Today, it has 3,000 registered unit members throughout the world and 38 brother countries are affiliated, and more new units are being established. Restructured with regional and general advisers, Bishop Edward W. O'Rourke accepted and continued to serve as Spiritual Moderator. An auspicious development turned up when the office move to Lakeland, Florida as the Salesian religious family of priests, brothers, and sisters and co-operators of St. John Bosco, and Mary Help of Christians School in Tampa, Florida backed up the organization. A member of the order has joined the Advisory Board of the Knights of the Altar. In 1974, when K of A representatives gathered in Rome during its 35th anniversary that coincided with All Saints Day, Pope Pius XII sanctified boy servers in the Sacred Congregation to the Pontifical Work for Ecclesiastical Vocations when he said that "Mass servers as the first seminary." In 1978, a revised K of A Handbook was published (first edition was in 1971), with a new program, revised materials, and a renewed effort to promote K of A society and to foster vocations.

HAIL, MARY, FULL OF GRACE. THE LORD IS WITH YOU

The feast of the Holy Rosary has begun. Known as the Rosary Month, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Holy Rosary during the seventh day in the month of October. It was to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and thank her for providing the people and the church protection by answering the prayers in praying of the Holy Rosary. But, why October 07?

Pope St. Pius V initially instituted the feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary in 1571 in remembrance of the miraculous triumph of the Christian soldiers at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. With the help of this victory, Europe was saved an Islamic invasion. At the time of the battle, the Ottoman Empire was advancing on Venice. To eradicate Christianity completely, the Ottoman Empire had as its goal. The Pope, who was vastly outnumbered, urged everyone to pray the rosary, and they did. As a result of a miraculous victory against the Ottoman Empire, Mary was granted the title "Our Lady of Victory."

One of the finest ways to pray to Mary, the Mother of God, is through the rosary, commonly referred to as the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Lord's Prayer is typically recited while wearing a rosary, which typically consists of one bead between each of five decades, or sets of ten beads, for the Hail Mary. Following each decade, the Glory be is typically recited. Meditation on the glorious, joyful, and sorrowful mysteries—a group of biblical themes—is advised during the prayers.

Here are some trivia regarding the Holy Rosary:
• The rosary is also known as the “Bible on a string” because the mysteries of the Rosary share the Gospel.
• Mary appeared to St. Dominic and gave him the Rosary. It is a gift from heaven.
• The rosary has 59 beads, 3 ft. of cord, 14 plastic spacers, a metal spacer, a crucifix, and a Saint medal
• St. Padre Pio described it as our greatest weapon
• When Mary appeared in Fatima, she spoke of only two things that could bring an end to the World War I (WW1): saying the rosary and offering up suffering
• Catholics are buried with a rosary as a sign of their devotion
• St. Thomas Aquinas gave the longest (known) homily on the rosary and it lasted for FORTY days

Many popes and saints have urged people to pray the Rosary throughout the Catholic Church's history. We grow to see the true meaning of the meditations as we begin to understand and love the Rosary and pray it more frequently. We begin to see how its prayers serve as reminders of not only Mary, but also of Christ himself.

Through Mary, we are lead to a closer relationship with Mary's son, Jesus. The Rosary is an invitation to bring our needs to God and to grow in our love for Him. We must meditate deeply on the mystery associated with the decade of the rosary when we recite the twelve prayers that make up that decade. Simple recitation, whether vocally or in silence, is not enough because we miss the true essence of the prayers. Praying the Rosary therefore is not just simply about reciting prayers. It involves reflecting on the grace of God. Praying is a powerful act that lets us develop and strengthen our relationship with God and the Rosary offers the same beautiful reward. By praying the Rosary, we meditate on the events in the life of Jesus Christ and this lets us know God more. When we are unaware of the meditation aspect of the Rosary, we reduce the prayer to an empty, repetitive and meaningless gesture. In Matthew 6:7, Jesus Christ forbids us to practice prayer in meaningless and repetitive babbles. It is precisely the reflective nature of the Rosary that distinguishes it as a powerful and profound way of praying.

Brothers/Sisters in Christ,
Every Saturday afternoon at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish, Grotto, the Altar Servers will lead the Rosary.

Holy Saturday, also known as Black Saturday, is the day during Holy Week when Catholics recall Jesus' entombment. Today is a day of preparation. Today is a day to ponder quietly and prayerfully on the profound seriousness of the crucifixion and Jesus' great sacrifice. Our churches around the world are bereft of the Blessed Sacrament and silent in expectation of Easter's triumph over darkness and evil, sin and death.

Good Friday- April 15, 2022

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is commemorated by Catholics on Good Friday. On this day, Catholics are joined by nearly all other Christians in solemn celebration. In many parts of the world, it is also a legal holiday.

The Stations of the Cross, a 14-step devotion often performed by Catholics during Lent and especially on Good Friday, memorialize the events of Good Friday. During Lent, the Stations of the Cross are often recited on Wednesdays and Fridays. Acts of Reparation is another devotional that can be prayed.

Within the Church, Good Friday is a fasting day. Good Friday is traditionally part of Mass and Eucharistic celebrations. A liturgy may still be held, and if communion is received, it will be from hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday. Only under exceptional situations may baptism, penance, and anointing of the sick be performed. The bells of the churches have stopped ringing. Altars are stripped of their decorations.
