CHURCH NEWS | Pope Leo Urges The Youth: “Do Not Disappear, Persevere Together in Faith”
Addressing young people ahead of their Confirmation, Pope Leo highlighted the Holy Spirit’s gift of perseverance, not as something lived alone, but as a journey shared in friendship and community.
“We do not live the faith alone; we live it together,” he said, reminding the youth that walking as disciples of Jesus means staying, growing, and journeying side by side.
The message extends far beyond one archdiocese, it is a call to all young people: do not disappear. Too often, many drift away after milestones like Confirmation, leaving behind the very community meant to sustain them.
Remain. Be present. Build friendships rooted in Christ. For in staying, we not only persevere, we become living witnesses of a faith that endures.

May 13
Our Lady of Fatima

On 13 May 1917, in that third year of the First World War which was to cost eight million lives, important events were taking place simultaneously — in Russia, communistic, atheistic Bolshevism was being organized under the leadership of Lenin and Trotsky who had just arrived in St Petersburg; in the neighbourhood of the little Portuguese town of Fatima, the Mother of God herself deigned to appear in the first of six apparitions to three children, to make through them one final appeal to our materialistic, war-torn world.

“In a spirit of sacrifice to our Lord, are you willing to accept everything he may send you as reparation for the sins by which his majesty is offended, as a means for converting all sinners, and as atonement for the blasphemies offered to the Immaculate Heart of Mary?” A simple “yes” being their reply, she urged: “Then pray the Rosary often and devoutly, for the peace of the world!” “Recite the Rosary daily, and after the Gloria Patri of each decade add: O my Jesus, forgive us our sins! Save us from the fires of hell! Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who most need thy mercy!”

And on 13 October, she declared: “I am the Lady of the Holy Rosary! I have come to ask all humankind to do penance and to ask pardon for its sins! Do not add to the countless outrages by which our Lord is already so offended, especially by sins of impurity.”

Holy of the Day

St Soter
Pope Martyr (-175)

St Soter was a native of Fondi near Gaeta in Italy. It was upon the death of St Anicetus in 166, that Soter was raised to the Papacy thus becoming the 12th in the succession of Popes. One of the rising heretical sects which this Pope had to combat during his 9-year reign was that of Montanus, a Phrygian, who taught that certain sins could never be forgiven and claimed that he was God's messenger for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. To St Soter is also attributed a precept that all the faithful, excepting only such as were guilty of a notable crime, should receive Holy Communion on Maundy Thursday.

A letter which the Pope sent to the persecuted Church at Corinth has unfortunately been lost, but an extant fragment of the reverent reply of St Dionysius, the Bishop of Corinth, is interesting for its reference to "the abundance which the Pope has sent to the saints, and the consolation which he has offered with words of comfort to the brethren who came to him, as a loving father would to his children."

"Today, the Lord's day, we have read your letter and we will always wish to re-read it and to be admonished, the same as by the earlier letter which was sent to us by Clement."
St Soter is believed to have suffered martyrdom in 175 under Marcus Aurelius.

Holy of the Day

St Anselm
Bishop Confessor, Doctor of the Church (1033 - 1109)

Born in Aosta in the Italian Alps, St Anselm came from the noble Lombard family. His mother, Ermenberga, a Burgundian, was a pious woman, but after her death his father’s violence and harshness led Anselm to flee home.

After several years of wandering in France he took the Benedictine habit in 1060 at Bec (Normandy), where his illustrious countryman Blessed Lanfranc had started his famous school.

Soon outstanding for his learning, within a span of three years he was made Prior and, after another 15 years, despite his reluctance, Abbot.

While at Bec he wrote his well known philosophical and theological works, the Monologium and the Proslogium, with the ontological argument for the existence of God.

As Abbot, Anselm had to cross over to England from time to time in connection with his abbey’s English properties; he thereby came to be so known and highly esteemed for his virtues of holiness and prudence that in 1093 he was, in spite of his strenuous remonstrances, made Archbishop of Canterbury, in the hope that he would be able to cope with the encroachments of King William the Red.

William had kept the See of Canterbury vacant for four years after the death of Lanfranc in order to seize its income.

Anselm’s insistence on reforming the Church and maintaining her rights saw him now banished to the Continent by the king.

However, William’s successor, Henry I, recalled him in 1100, but the encroachments continued, and a second exile followed.

Reconciliation was not effected until 1107, when the king relinquished his claim to investing Bishops and Abbots, though the latter were permitted by the Pope to take an oath of allegiance in the light of their temporal possessions.

Two years later Anselm died at Canterbury on 21 April 1109.

Gentle and self-effacing by nature, St Anselm was unyielding on matters of principle. A man of fearless zeal, he strongly denounced the slave trade and staunchly defended the Filioque ("and from the Son"), a doctrine that indicated matter-of-factly that the Holy Spirit proceeded from the Father and the Son.

Many important writings of this noble Prelate, who was considered the greatest intellect of his age and a "pattern for all theologians", were composed during his two banishments.

His main work is Cur Deus Homo (Why God Became Man), a dialogue with a non-Christian.

Debunking the theory that Satan has a right over man through sin, this treatise teaches that sin is essentially an infinite offence against God, which demands adequate atonement, an act the God-Man Jesus performed once and for all on the Cross.

The deep and abiding influence which his thinking has had upon the Church’s philosophy and theology earned him the titles of "Father of Scholasticism" and "Doctor of the Universal Church" (1720).

Holy of the Day

St Agnes of Montepulciano
Virgin (1266 - 1317)

St Agnes, the daughter of the Count of Segni in Tuscany (Italy), was remarkable for her spirituality. At 9, she entered the strict Franciscan sisterhood "del sacco", i.e., "Sisters of the Sack" (so called because of their coarse garments) and at 15 was elected the first Abbess of the new Dominican convent at Proceno, at whose foundation she had laboured the two previous years at the instance of Pope Nicholas IV.

Some years later, the townsfolk of her native Montepulciano, desirous of her return, offered to build her a convent in a place once occupied by a house of ill fame. Thus in 1298 she founded the celebrated convent there and, placing it under Dominican patronage, governed it for 19 years until her death.

St Agnes possessed numerous mystical gifts, whereby she was favoured with visions of Our Blessed Mother, the Christ-child and the angels, and cross-shaped particles like manna were known to fall on her and wherever she prayed. Her outstanding virtue, besides the purity of her prayer, was her complete faith and trust in God, and to this was attributed her great power of intercession and her fame as a worker of miracles.
