WHY DOES SAN ROQUE HAVE A DOG AND AN ANGEL?

One of the most recognizable symbols of San Roque (Saint Roch) is the faithful dog at his side. But why?

According to tradition, while caring for victims of the plague, San Roque himself became sick and withdrew to a secluded place so he would not infect others. There, a dog would come to him each day carrying bread, helping sustain him during his illness.

The dog's owner eventually followed the animal, discovered San Roque, and cared for him.

The angel, meanwhile, represents God's heavenly assistance and care during San Roque's suffering and illness. Together, the dog and angel remind us of God's providence and loving presence in times of suffering.

Because of this tradition, San Roque is often depicted with a dog, bread, and an angel.

AUGUST 15, 2026 | PROCESSION

Sa atong paglakaw uban kang Sr. San Roque, atong ipakita ang atong pagtuo, debosyon, ug pagpasalamat sa Ginoo. Hinaot nga ang iyang pananglitan sa pag-alagad ug pagtabang sa uban magdasig kanato nga magpadayon sa pagtuo ug pag-alagad.

Uban sa usa ka kasingkasing, maghiusa kita sa pag-ampo ug pagpasidungog sa atong patron nga si Sr. San Roque.

Sr. San Roque, iampo kami ug panalipdi kami kanunay. 🙏

DAY 9 | IKASIYAM NGA ADLAW SA NOVENA

Malipayon ug mapasalamaton kitang nagtapos sa siyam ka adlaw nga novena. Hinaot nga ang atong panaghiusa sa pag-ampo magpadayon dili lamang karon, kundili sa matag adlaw sa atong kinabuhi.

San Roque, iampo kami! Ampingi ug giyahi kami kanunay. 🙏
