Mark 9:33-37
CHILDLIKE CHARACTER OF SERVICE
Verse 37 says: “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me.”
God wants us to emulate the character of a child in serving Him and His people. Such service is must demonstrate the child-like character:
1. Not aiming for fame – v 34 – for them to win is for fun only. Unmindful of being great but continues to serve God with enthusiasm. Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
2. Selfless service – v 35 – they don’t harbor ill feelings. If we desire to be first, we shall be last of all and servant of all. Philippians 2:4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
3. Serve in all humility – v 36-37 – The child cannot promise to repay favors, or use influence for you. Children do not play for power. Philippians 2:7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
Like a child, the life and the death of Jesus are the ultimate demonstrations of the greatness of humility.
I will always aim for excellent service by doing it in all humility.
