Feast of Mary Magdalene | Apostle of the Apostles

"Apostle of the Apostles" is the title given to Mary Magdalene by St. Thomas Aquinas. Her name comes from her home town of Magdala, a fishing village on the western shore of Lake Tiberias. St Luke the Evangelist tells us, in Chapter 8 of his Gospel, how Jesus went from town to town announcing the Good News of the Kingdom of God, and how the Twelve Apostles were with Him together with some women who had been healed of evil spirits or infirmities, and were serving them. Among these was a certain "Mary, called the Magdalene, from whom seven demons came out."

During the Second World War from 1941 to 1944 when the Japanese occupied the town, a building known the Malacbalac converted into a garrison by the Japanese. Beside it was a graveyard where the people killed during the war was buried. After initiative of Fr. Geminiano Espinosa. The people donated materials and money for the war, the graveyard was removed and a temporary ermita was built there through the construction of that ermita.

In 1952. Fr. Floriรฑo Deocareza took over from Fr. Espinosa as parish priest. He put up a temporary rectory next to the ermita. This was made possible through the help of the Malacbalac Catholic Youth League (MACYL), which initiated the fund-raising projects. Although both the chapel and the rectory were temporary, both structures lasted for several years.

In 1969 Fr. Antonio Vera succeeded Fr. Deocareza. He improved the chapel, making it more permanent by cementing the foundation and walls. He organized the Legion of Mary, codified directives for the organization of catechists, and founded the Parish Pastoral Council.

In 1989. Fr. Emiliano Competente took over the pastorship of the Parish. He further improved the floor and ceiling of the church as well as the altar. He built a "castillo" to be used during the dawn procession and the "salubong" on Easter Sunday. He activated the religious organizations and movements such as the Cursillo, Neo-Catechumenal Way, the Adoracion Nocturna, Apostleship of Prayer, and Devotion to the Divine Mercy, Catechesis was intensified in the schools and barangays.

During the time of Fr. Job Surban the El Shaddai Movement took root in the parish and the Pioduran Catholic Youth Organization (PCYO) was organized.

Fr. Antonio Bongalon initiated the organization of Barangay Pastoral Councils. He was particularly supportive of seminarians.

In 1999, Fr. Francisco Capil reactivated the Parish Pastoral Council and continued the existing programs and projects of the parish both on the spiritual and physical levels.

MAY 02|Feast Saint Dominic Savio, patron saint of choirboys, the falsely accused, juvenile delinquents and Altar Servers

Dominic was born on April 2, 1842, in San Giovanni di Riva, near Chieri (Turin).

On the occasion of his First Communion, at the age of seven, he set out his lifeโ€™s program: โ€œI will go to Confession frequently and Communion as often as my confessor allows. I want to make Sundays and feast days holy. My friends will be Jesus and Mary. Death but not sin.โ€ At the age of twelve, he was accepted by Don Bosco into the Oratory in Turin and Dominic asked his help in order to โ€œbecome a saint.โ€ Gentle, serene and happy, he put great effort into fulfilling his duties as a student and helping his companions in every way he could, teaching them Catechism, assisting the sick and settling quarrels.

Prayer to Saint Dominic Savio
O Saint Dominic Savio, a model of purity, piety, penance and apostolic zeal for youth; grant that, through your intercession, we may service God in our ordinary duties with fervent devotion, and attain the grace of holy joy on earth, that we may one day love God forever in Heaven. Amen.
