Have you ever wondered why the priest, deacon, altar servers, and sometimes the cross and incense process into the church at the beginning of Mass?
It is not simply an organized walk to the sanctuary.
The entrance procession is a liturgical sign.
It marks the beginning of the sacred celebration and reminds us that the Church is a pilgrim people journeying toward Christ.

The exact arrangement can vary according to the circumstances and local customs, but ordinarily the procession includes the altar servers, cross-bearer, ministers, deacon, and priest.
When incense is used, the thurifer may precede the procession.
The procession moves toward the sanctuary, where the altar stands at the heart of the celebration of the Eucharist.
The congregation stands and joins in the Entrance Chant or hymn.
But what are we actually witnessing?

The procession signals:
The sacred celebration has begun.
This is why the faithful should turn their attention away from unnecessary conversations and distractions.
The Mass is not a performance we have come to watch.
We have come to participate in the worship of God.

When the processional cross is carried before the ministers, it gives us a powerful visual reminder:
Christ must be at the centre.
The Cross is not merely a decoration.
It reminds us of the sacrifice of Christ and the salvation He accomplished through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
The Church does not begin her worship by pointing to herself.
She points to Christ.

The priest enters as the ordained minister who will preside over the Eucharistic celebration.
This does not mean that the priest is literally Jesus.
Rather, through the sacramental ministry of the priest, Christ acts in the liturgy.
The priest will proclaim the Gospel, lead the prayers, and offer the Eucharistic Sacrifice in persona Christi.

There is something beautiful about seeing different ministers walking together.
The Church is not merely a collection of individuals.
She is a communion.
Bishops, priests, deacons, religious, altar servers, and lay faithful all have different roles, but all belong to the one Body of Christ.
The procession therefore gives us a visible image of the Church journeying together toward God.

The procession does not simply end at a chair or a podium.
It leads to the altar.
Why?
Because the altar is intimately connected with the Eucharistic Sacrifice.
Christ will give Himself to His Church under the sacramental signs of bread and wine.
This is why the altar receives profound reverence.

Upon reaching the sanctuary, the priest and deacon ordinarily bow toward the altar, and the priest and deacon kiss the altar.
When incense is used, the altar may also be incensed.
These gestures express reverence for the altar and the sacred mysteries about to be celebrated.
The altar is not simply a piece of furniture.
It is a central symbol of Christ and His Eucharistic sacrifice.

Standing is a traditional posture of prayer and respect.
During the entrance procession, the congregation stands as the sacred ministers enter.
It is a way of saying:
โWe are ready to worship.โ
Our bodies participate in our prayer.
We don't worship God only with our minds and voices.
We worship Him with our entire selves.

The next time you see the entrance procession, don't simply see people walking toward the altar.
See the Church on pilgrimage.

Christ is calling His people together.
The Church is gathering around the altar.
And we are being invited to enter more deeply into the mystery of Christ's sacrifice and Resurrection.
So when the procession begins, put away the phone, stop the conversation, stand reverently, and turn your heart toward the altar.
You are not merely watching a procession.
You are entering into the worship of Heaven.
