CHURCH NEWS | Pope Leo XIV: Attendance at Sunday Mass can Never be replaced by Virtual Participation

Pope Leo XIV has urged Catholics to prioritize attending Sunday Mass, warning that active participation in the Eucharist cannot be replaced by virtual gatherings.

“I urge everyone to seek the best possible conditions so that even those who are unable to take time off work on Sundays may take part in holy Mass,” Leo said.

Pope Leo XIV also explained that the Church has always regarded Sunday as a weekly celebration of Christ’s resurrection: the “dies Domini” (“the Lord’s day”).

He urged Catholics to attend Sunday Mass and warned against using virtual gatherings to substitute for in-person attendance.

“To sanctify Sunday, it is essential to celebrate the Eucharist,” Leo said. “This assembly cannot be substituted by a solely virtual presence, nor can it be reduced to a merely passive gathering.”

“The liturgical assembly is in fact fulfilled through the active participation of brothers and sisters,” Leo added.

Serving at the altar is a beautiful privilege.
But our ministry doesn't end with the final blessing or when we take off our cassock and surplice.

The reverence we show in the sanctuary should continue in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.

How we speak. How we treat others. How we forgive. How we live.

These are also acts of service to Christ.
So here's a question for every altar server:
If your service ends at the church door... did your service truly begin?

May our lives reflect the same love and reverence we offer at the altar, so that others may encounter Christ through us every day.

Serving the Lord is never a waste of time.

There comes a time when life gets busier.

The cassock is folded away.
The surplice stays in the closet.
The ministry schedule no longer has your name.

Yet every time you hear the entrance hymn...
every time you smell the incense...
every time you step inside a church...

A part of your heart quietly remembers what it was like to serve at the altar.

Because you may leave the sanctuary,
but the sanctuary never truly leaves you.

"Years may pass. Life may become busy. But every time you hear the entrance hymn, a part of you will always miss serving at the altar."

May we never lose the love we first found in serving the Lord.

TRIDUUM OF HEARTS 2026

This June, the faithful are invited to contemplate three hearts that reveal God's plan of love and salvation:

June 12 – Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Heart of Jesus is the source of divine mercy, sacrificial love, and redemption. Pierced on the Cross for our salvation, His Sacred Heart reminds us that God loves us with an everlasting and unfailing love.

June 13 – Immaculate Heart of Mary
The Heart of Mary is pure, humble, and completely united to the will of God. Through her Immaculate Heart, we learn obedience, faithfulness, and trust in the Lord even amid suffering and uncertainty.

June 17 – Most Chaste Heart of Saint Joseph
The Heart of Joseph reflects silent strength, fidelity, purity, and courageous fatherhood. His chaste heart teaches us how to serve God faithfully, protect those entrusted to our care, and place complete confidence in Divine Providence.

Together, these three hearts form a beautiful school of holiness. The Sacred Heart of Jesus teaches us how to love; the Immaculate Heart of Mary teaches us how to surrender; and the Most Chaste Heart of Joseph teaches us how to serve with humility and faith.

May this Triduum of Hearts lead us closer to the Holy Family and inspire us to consecrate our own hearts to God.
