THE VEXILLUM

The Vexillum was conceptualized by Frank Duff, the founder of the Legion of Mary, as a direct adaptation of the standard carried by the ancient Roman legions. It physically represents the spiritual mission of the organization, visualizing the conquest of the world by the Holy Spirit acting through Mary and her followers.

The Vexillum is structured with the following key design elements:

The Staff and Crossbar: Modeled after the Roman military standard to represent the discipline, unity, and militant structure of the Legion. The crossbar forms the shape of a cross, signifying that Legionaries fight under the banner of Christ.

The Dove (Holy Spirit): At the intersection of the staff and crossbar sits a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit. This was added to reflect Frank Duff’s deep devotion to the Holy Spirit and the belief that all Legionary work is guided and sustained by Him.

The Medal of the Immaculate Conception (Miraculous Medal): Suspended from the dove's beak is an oval frame bearing the image of Mary as she appears on the Miraculous Medal. This signifies that the Holy Spirit acts through Mary, and that Legionaries operate under her patronage.

The Globe: Beneath the medal lies a representation of the world. It serves as a visual reminder of the Legion's ultimate mission: to conquer the entire world for Christ.

The Inscription: Below the crossbar, a banner reads "Legio Mariae" (Latin for "Legion of Mary").

The Color Red: The background fabric and halo of the Virgin Mary are colored red, representing the Holy Spirit and the fiery nature of charity.

Come Holy Spirit, Creator Blest (Veni, Creator Spiritus)

Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest,
and in our souls take up Thy rest;
come with Thy grace and heavenly aid
to fill the hearts which Thou hast made.
O comforter, to Thee we cry,
O heavenly gift of God Most High,
O fount of life and fire of love,
and sweet anointing from above.

Thou in Thy sevenfold gifts are known;
Thou, finger of God's hand we own;
Thou, promise of the Father, Thou
Who dost the tongue with power imbue.

Kindle our sense from above,
and make our hearts o'erflow with love;
with patience firm and virtue high
the weakness of our flesh supply.

Far from us drive the foe we dread,
and grant us Thy peace instead;
so shall we not, with Thee for guide,
turn from the path of life aside.

Oh, may Thy grace on us bestow
the Father and the Son to know;
and Thee, through endless times confessed,
of both the eternal Spirit blest.

Now to the Father and the Son,
Who rose from death, be glory given,
with Thou, O Holy Comforter,
henceforth by all in earth and heaven. Amen.

SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST
MAY 24, 2026

Today, the Holy Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles gathered in the Upper Room, fifty days after the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pentecost is considered the “Birthday of the Church” because it marks the moment when the Apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit, courageously began preaching the Gospel to all nations. From being fearful and hidden, they became bold witnesses of Christ. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, around three thousand people were baptized that day, and the mission of the Church began to spread throughout the world.

The Roman Catholic Church was founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He established His Church upon Saint Peter and the Apostles, saying:

“You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.” — Matthew 16:18

At Pentecost, this Church founded by Christ was publicly manifested and empowered through the Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit continues to guide, sanctify, and strengthen the Church until today. It is not just a past event. It is a reminder that the Holy Spirit still transforms lives, strengthens the weak, heals hearts, raises saints, and sets souls on fire for God.

As Legionaries and faithful Catholics, may we open our hearts to the gifts of the Holy Spirit:
1. Wisdom
2. Understanding
3. Counsel
4. Fortitude
5. Knowledge
6. Piety
7. Fear of the Lord

PLENARY INDULGENCE ON PENTECOST

A plenary indulgence may be obtained on Pentecost by the faithful who:
• Are in the state of grace
• Have complete detachment from sin, even venial sin
• Go to sacramental confession
• Receive Holy Communion
• Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father
• Perform the indulgenced act with the intention of gaining the indulgence

On Pentecost Sunday, the indulgence may be gained especially by:
- Publicly reciting the “Veni Creator Spiritus” or another approved prayer invoking the Holy Spirit
- Participating devoutly in Pentecost liturgies and prayers

This plenary indulgence may be applied either for oneself or for the souls in purgatory.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Your love!

THE BEGINNING: THE LEGION OF MARY IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Legion of Mary in the Philippines traces its humble beginnings to a small sewing room in Manila — a modest start that would later spark one of the most influential Marian apostolates in the Far East.

On July 21, 1940, the first Legion of Mary praesidium in the Philippines was officially established at the Hospicio de San Jose in Manila. More significantly, it was recognized as the very first praesidium in the entire Far East, marking a historic milestone in the worldwide growth of the Legion.

The praesidium was founded by Fr. Manuel de Gracia, CM, together with pioneering legionaries Joaquina Lucas and Pacita Santos. It was given the beautiful title “Purification of Our Lady.”

Few people realize that the first meetings of the Legion in the Philippines were held not in a grand chapel or large parish hall, but in the Obrador, the sewing room of the Hospicio de San Jose located on Isla de Convalesencia in Manila, accessible through Ayala Bridge.

From this simple location, fifteen active members gathered in prayer and apostolic commitment, unaware that their small group would eventually help spread the Legion throughout the nation and beyond. An interesting historical detail is how Fr. Manuel de Gracia first encountered the Legion of Mary. He reportedly discovered the organization through a copy of The Boston Pilot, a Catholic newspaper. Inspired by what he read, he contacted the Legion headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, requesting official materials and guidance for establishing the movement in the Philippines.

The Legion’s growth in Manila was extraordinary. Within just over a year, the organization had already expanded to 14 active praesidia in the Manila area by December 1941. However, the outbreak of the Second World War would soon interrupt many Church activities across the country. Despite the hardships and uncertainties of the war years, the Legion of Mary survived and continued its mission through the faith and perseverance of its members.

What began in a humble sewing room in Manila in 1940 has now become part of a global apostolate reaching millions of members worldwide. The story of the first Philippine praesidium stands as a reminder that great missions often begin quietly—with a few faithful individuals willing to answer God’s call through the guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Today, generations of legionaries continue the mission first entrusted to those fifteen pioneering members of “Purification of Our Lady,” carrying forward a legacy of holiness, evangelization, and Marian devotion across the Philippines and beyond.
