“Count the Stars if You Can…” (Genesis 15:5)
A joyful celebration marked the centenary of Jaime Bonet Bonet, FMVD, founder of the Fraternidad Misionera Verbum Dei. The entire Verbum Dei family in Luzon—from Tagaytay, Quezon City, Manila, and Pasig—gathered at the Verbum Dei Center of Formation in Pasig on May 31, 2026.
The occasion was a triple celebration: thanksgiving for the gift of Jaime Bonet’s life on his 100th birthday, the commemoration of his 74th Sacerdotal Anniversary, and the celebration of the Solemnity of Trinity Sunday. Jaime transmitted to us not only the charism but also his deep spirituality, his intimate and familiar relationship with the Trinity as the treasure of his life, the “Quarteto de sus amores”.
The day’s theme was introduced through a video message from Anne Healy, President of Verbum Dei, who conveyed the spirit of the Centenary Celebration held in Mallorca, Spain. This was followed by a festive Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Fr. B**g Guinoo, with the homily delivered by Fr. Mike Cheong and concelebrated by Fr. Iwao Ikegami. The invitation is not only to be grateful of Jaime’s life but the challenge is to live out faithfully the charism entrusted to us.
It was an exciting moment to journey to Mallorca through a virtual pilgrimage video in honor of Jaime’s 100th anniversary. It was an inspiring virtual pilgrimage courtesy of Gelo, that allowed everyone to discover Jaime’s place of origin and the significant locations that shaped his life, vocation, and ministry.
The sharing of salo-salo meal together as a way to keep the strong bond as missionary family with the same sense of identity and belonging to Verbum Dei. The rest of the afternoon was filled with engaging activities and surprises that helped everyone to deepen their knowledge of Jaime through the Interactive Trivia games led by Dolly and Anj. The “Usapang Jaime” interview session featured missionaries Amy, Connie, and Angela shared their memorable experiences with Jaime—hosted by Jason and Shiela Delgado.
Another highlight was a video message from Catalina Morey, one of the first missionaries who founded Verbum Dei in the Philippines. She shared how Jaime profoundly influenced her vocation to follow Christ and how his witness continues to inspire her through his faithful living of the charism and the evangelical life.
“So your descendant will be..” each name written in the star is a powerful reminder that we are the promised descendants to Jaime—the fruits of his life and mission extending throughout Asia, particularly in the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
Indeed, as God promised Abraham, the stars continue to multiply. Through Jaime’s life, faith, and missionary zeal, countless lives have been touched and transformed, becoming living signs of God’s enduring promise and fruitfulness.
