It is easy to let our hearts be divided by the demands and distractions of the world. We live in an age that constantly begs for our affection and attention, urging us to pour our energy into our ambitions, our possessions, the approval of others, and fleeting comforts. We can easily spend hours consumed by our worries, our routines, or our desire for success, while dedicating only a fraction of that devotion to our spiritual lives. St. Clare of Assisi reminds us of a profound spiritual truth: our hearts are like clay, molded by whatever they cling to most tightly. If we love the superficial, our lives become shallow; if we love ourselves above all else, we become isolated and proud.
To realize that "who we love shapes what we become" is to understand that our affections dictate our transformation. When we truly love God, we begin to take on His characteristics. By gazing upon Christ; His humility, His mercy, His self-emptying love, we are slowly reshaped into His likeness. People are transformed not by sheer willpower, but by the object of their deepest devotion. If our greatest love is Jesus, our lives will naturally begin to radiate His peace, patience, and kindness. It is entirely possible to call ourselves followers of Christ, yet give the best parts of our hearts to things that cannot save us. Christ calls us to remember that faith is not just an intellectual agreement; it is the ultimate orientation of the heart.
We all struggle with this divided loyalty at times. We carry a genuine desire to grow closer to God, but that intention often wavers when tested by exhaustion, worldly pressures, or the allure of instant gratification. But recognizing where our affections have strayed is the first step toward authentic spiritual renewal. Because God loved us first, and demonstrated that love most perfectly by giving Himself entirely on the cross, we are called to return that love without holding back. May we never let our souls be captured by temporary things. Instead, may we allow the Holy Spirit to purify our desires and align them perfectly with the heart of God.
The world does not just need more successful or busy people; it desperately needs souls who have been transformed by divine love. May we have the humility to honestly examine what truly occupies our thoughts, the courage to detach from whatever pulls us away from God, and the dedication to fix our eyes entirely on Christ.
Lord Jesus, give us the grace to love You above all things. Help us to recognize the hidden idols in our lives and to redirect our hearts fully toward You. Where our affections are divided, bring focus; where our love has grown cold, set our hearts on fire again. Mold us into Your image, so that by loving You, we may become instruments of Your love to everyone we meet. Amen.
