APART FROM LOVE
1 Corinthians 13:1-3
The letter to Corinthians was written by Paul the Apostle, probably around A.D. 53-55 during his stay in Ephesus (1 Corinthians 16:8) - 3 years after his ministry in Corinth.
Paul wrote to the Christian church in Corinth, a wealthy and influential city in Greece. Corinth was a major commercial center located on an isthmus connecting northern and southern Greece.
Paul was challenged because Corinth is already established place. It was known for:
* International trade and commerce
* Cultural diversity
* Wealth and socialStatus
* Religious pluralism andPagan worship
* Moral corruption and sexual immoral
Why Paul wrote a letter to the Corinthians?
-He wrote to address several problems of the church (No church is perfect, no church will ever claim to not have problems, but we have a perfect Savior). Paul received reports from members of the church (1 Cor. 1:11) and a letter from the Corinthians asking questions (1 Cor. 7:1).
*Divisions in the church (chapters 1-4)
Believers were forming factions around different leaders.
*Sexual immorality (chapters 5-6)
Serious moral issues were being tolerated.
*Relationships:
Lawsuits among believers (chapter 6)
Christians were taking one another to secular courts.
Marriage and singleness (chapter 7)
Paul answered questions about family life and relationships.
*Christian freedom and idols (chapters 8- 10) How believers should use their freedom responsibly.
*Christian gathering / community
Worship and the Lord's Supper (chapter 11)
Correcting abuses in public worship.
*Spiritual gifts (chapters 12-14)
Teaching about unity and the proper use of gifts.
*Doctrine (The resurrection (chapter 15)
Defending the bodily resurrection of Christ and believers.
The problem behind all the problems is lack of love.
Many of our problems are not ultimately problems of ability, knowledge, or activity - they are problems of love.
We will be learning today that love is sincerely important because:
1. Apart from love, WORDS are just noise
-If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, l am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
Words spoken in love is just like music. It is a collection of sound that communicates, elicits emotions, inspires, moves someone to action.
When we grow in love then we can also have:
* powerful preaching
* eloquent words
* impressive spiritual gifts,
* Supernatural experiences,
* great knowledge,
but if love is absent, all of it can become nothing more than spiritual noise.
You can preach loudly but love poorly.
You can worship passionately but treat people harshly.
You can speak in tongues but speak cruelly to others.
You can have spiritual gifts but have spiritual immaturity.
Let’s practice spiritual gifts but let us also grow in love.
2. Apart from love, our GIFTS become useless
-And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if l have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, l am nothing.
Without love, spiritual gifts can be abused and misused.
a. Don't use your gift to prove yourself- use it to bless others.
Gift + Pride = Self-promotion
Gift + Love = Blessing
Am I using my gift to make Christ known or to make myself noticed?
b. Don't let giftedness become an excuse for bad character. You can be an excellent singer, preacher, leader, musician, teacher, or organizer-and still hurt people through impatience, arrogance, or harshness.
c. Your gift should make people experience Christ, not just experience you. A powerful singer should not leave people saying, "Ang galing niya!" only.
A preacher should not simply make people say, "Ang galing mag-preach!"
A leader should not make people
dependent on the leader.
The goal is:
Because of the way you used your gift, I experience Christ.
You can have faith, knowledge, prophecy, and spiritual power without having the character of Christ.
3. Apart from love, our SACRIFICE becomes meaningless
-If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn't love others, 1 would have gained nothing.
You can give, serve, and sacrifice - and still miss the heart of God. How do this happen?
a. You can give generously without having a generous heart. -Giving is not only about how much leaves our hands, but what is happening in our hearts.
The amount may be sacrificial, but the heart can still be transactional. Love gives without thinking, what's in it for me?
b. You can do something "for God" that God never asked you to do. -Being busy in ministry isn't automatically the same as being faithful to God.
We need to ask:
Am I doing this because God called me, or because I need to feel useful, needed, and important?
Love is the evidence of maturity
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
Paul doesn't define maturity by what we possess, but by how we treat people.
Apart from Christ, we can never love truly.
If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love [for others growing out of God's love for me], then I have become only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal [just an annoying distraction].
The word “love” has little to do with emotion; it has much to do with self denial for the sake of another.
This description of agape love is perfectly demonstrated by Christ.
Christ loved us when we were undeserving.
Christ loved through sacrifice.
Christ loved even those who rejected Him.
Christ loved by serving.
Christ loved the unlovable and the overlooked Christ's love was not dependent on reciprocation.
We don't mature in love by merely learning what love is. We mature in love by encountering Christ's love and allowing His love to transform the way we love others.
Our love problem is an issue of intimacy. When we are immersed in the presence of God, He breaks our pride, our self-centeredness, our being difficult people - His love transforms.
