GRATEFUL, JOYFUL
Habakkuk 3:17-19

What is required in order to be grateful?
What is needed to feel joy?

Gratitude is the mature emotion. It is not when you have so much and you become joyful. It is when the table is bear, when the friends are gone, when the family is far away, when health is faltered, and when all is gone….and you still say, “yet I will rejoice in my God!”

As Brennan Manning wrote that “...the real difference in the church is not between conservatives and liberals, fundamentalists and charismatics, nor between Republicans and Democrats. The real difference is the aware and the unaware. When somebody is aware of that love—the same love that the Father has for Jesus—that person is just spontaneously grateful. Cries of thankfulness become the dominant characteristic of interior life, and the byproduct of gratitude is joy. LOVE DRAWS US HOME
Luke 15.11-32

In the two preceding stories, the seeker actively looked for the coin and the sheep, which could not return by themselves.

In this story, the father watched and waited. He was dealing with a human being, with a will of his own, but he was ready to greet his son when he returned.

In the same way, God’s love is constant, patient, and welcoming. He will search for us and give us opportunities to respond, but he will not force us to come to him. Like the prodigal father, God waits patiently until we come to our senses and return home.
