The possibility for the Catholic faithful worldwide to obtain plenary indulgence has been extended by the Apostolic Penitentiary upon Pope Francis' mandate. This comes in time with the celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the Coronation of Our Lady of Guadalupe on 12 December.

To receive plenary indulgence, one should:
(1) have an altar to Our Lady of Guadalupe at home
(2) watch a livestreamed/televised mass on 12 December at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe with active participation (ie "with devotion and with exclusive attention to the Eucharist")
(3) accomplish usual conditions for an indulgence, such as attending a full Mass, receiving Communion, being in a state of grace after confession and praying for the Pope's intentions (when public health guidance allow)

GLORY TO THE SAINTS OF TIMES

The celebration of the Solemnity of All Saints is a wonderful opportunity to give glory to God for the abundance of holiness in the Church, and to honor all the heroes and heroines of the Christian faith. The “canonized saints” are only the tip of the iceberg – the iceberg of Christian holiness which comprises millions of holy people whose names are not found in the calendars.

They performed no miracles, nor did they enjoy any supernatural apparition. They were only “ordinary Christians” – just as we are. The only thing that was “extraordinary” in them was their faithful love for God and generous love for people. Their success is an encouragement to all of us, ordinary faithful who share with them the sincere desire to “go to heaven.” All we have to do is follow their style – to live our ordinary lives loving God and neighbor to the best of our ability and thereby making of our lives a beautiful gift for the Lord.

How beautiful to hear, on this second Sunday of July, Jesus’ invitation, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened . . .”

No one can say that this invitation does not concern him or her. Bruised and wounded in the battles of life, especially in this “post Coronavirus devastation era,” we all appreciate Jesus’ invitation to go to him.

He is the divine Consoler and Healer who can nurse our wounds, heal our ailments, lighten our burdens, and strengthen us for the future tests of life. Jesus is ready to do that for us at any time, but he does it with a special effi cacy through the sacraments of the Eucharist and of Penance.

It is in the celebration of these Sacraments of his love that we experience the healing power and the consolation of his presence. Let us approach him with expectant hearts, therefore, as we begin this celebration of Year A the Eucharist, as we acknowledge our sinfulness and present to him the needs and burdens of all the people dear to us.
