About The Holy Family

The Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus, His mother Mary and His foster-father Joseph. The main purpose of the Feast is to use the Holy Family as a model for all families.

Our homes and families become the “domestic Church” as we live the life of the Church within our homes. We can make Christ and the Church the center of family life by praying together, reading Scripture, attending Mass and trying to imitate the lives of the Holy Family.

Saint John Chrysostom suggested that all Christians homes be a “family church”. Devotion to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph began largely in the seventeenth century with Pope Pius IX and Pope Leo XIII.

They approved general confraternities to help promote the devotion and in 1893, Pope Leo approved the feast and wrote part of the Office.

The feast was welcomed by future Popes as a means of bringing to homes the example of the Holy Family of Nazareth and helping Christian families to survive and prosper. Pope Leo XIII stated, “Nothing truly can be more salutary or efficacious for Christian families to mediate upon than the example of this Holy family, which embraces the perfection and completeness of all domestic virtues.”

ACT OF CONSECRATION OF FAMILIES TO ST. JOSEPH
(December 8, 2021 – Closing of the Year of St. Joseph)

Hail, St. Joseph,
Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
God our Father entrusted to you His Only Son.

In you, Mary placed her trust;
With you Christ Jesus became man.

One with Our Lord Jesus and the Blessed Mother
We honor you with sincere love and veneration.

We choose you this day to be our father,
Our guardian and our protector.
God our Father has allowed us to celebrate
this year dedicated to your honor

With fatherly love and care, you provided and built
the life of the Holy Family at Nazareth.

With grateful hearts, we recognize you as a great gift of God to us
to be our companion, teacher, model, and protector in this Jubilee year.

With fatherly love and care, our families, and our homes.
With fatherly love and care, you provided and built the life of the Holy Family at Nazareth.

We humbly beg you to bless all our undertakings to create our families' reflections of God’s love.

Obtain for all the members of our family
the grace to believe firmly what God has revealed
and to bear witness to our faith in all that we do.

Help us to build the domestic church in our homes,
by following your example of obedient faith, steadfast love
and unwavering hope in our loving Father.

You were always ready to listen and obey the Father’s will
and protected Jesus from all dangers.

Deliver us from all dangers that destroy the Gospel values
and teachings against family and life.

Protect us all as we battle against all moral
and physical illnesses in our society.

We entrust to you all our longings and desires that lead us to salvation.

We humbly beg you for the grace
to keep the members of our families bound together
by the ties of true Christian love in the unity of the Catholic Church.

Teach all fathers to be true to their vocation
as mirrors of the love of our Father in heaven.

We entrust to you all our works
to help our brothers and sisters in their sufferings.

To you, St. Joseph, after Jesus and Mary,
we consecrate our body and soul, with all that we are and have.

St. Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father.
Guide us in the path of life.

Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil.
