His Excellency Most Rev. Crispin Barrete Varquez D.D., born December 5, 1960, in the town of Sevilla, Bohol, is a Filipino Catholic prelate who was appointed the 8th Bishop-elect of the Diocese of Tagbilaran.

He earned his Philosophy degree at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran, Bohol, and his Theology degree at the St. Augustine Major Seminary in Tagaytay, Cavite.

Bishop Varquez was ordained to the priesthood on April 14, 1989, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Sevilla, his hometown. His first posting was as assistant parish priest in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.

In the 1990s until 2000, he served as formator at the seminaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Tagbilaran and St. Augustine in Tagaytay. He was later parish priest in various parishes of the Diocese of Tagbilaran before he was appointed as vicar general in January 2007.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Varquez to lead the Diocese of Borongan in Eastern Samar as its sixth bishop on August 4, 2007. He succeeded Leonardo Y. Medroso, who transferred to the Diocese of Tagbilaran in 2006. On October 18, he was consecrated to the episcopate before being installed on November 8.

On September 10, 2026, Pope Leo XIV appointed Varquez as the eighth Bishop of Tagbilaran, succeeding Alberto S. Uy, who transferred to the Archdiocese of Cebu in 2025. His appointment came four months after Gerardo S**o Jr., the initial bishop-elect, withdrew before his planned episcopal consecration in May 2026.

Welcome home, Bishop Bai.

The Saint Augustine Parish is ready to back you in your new pastoral role. We pray that you will be filled with grace, fulfillment, abundant blessings, and peace as you minister to the diocese's spiritual needs. We also anticipate growth in faith, alongside friendship and support, for our beloved St. Augustine Parish and vibrant community of Panglao.

May God bless your ministry among us, Panglaoanons.

FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
September 8, 2026

The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary invites us to reflect on her early life and seek her intercession for the world's innocent children. While many titles of the Blessed Virgin focus on her roles as the Queen of Heaven and Earth, the title "Mary the Child" stands out, emphasizing her humble beginnings and purity as a young girl.

In his 2004 homily for this feast, Pope St. John Paul II spoke profoundly about this aspect of Mary:

"The liturgy today commemorates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast, very important to popular piety, leads us to admire Mary the Child, the purest dawn of the Redemption. We are contemplating a little girl like every other, yet at the same time the only one who was 'blessed among women' (Lk 1: 42). Mary was the immaculate 'Daughter of Zion,' destined to become the Mother of the Messiah."

As we celebrate the birth of the Child Mary, let us reflect on her life and pray earnestly for children suffering around the world. May Mary, in her purity and grace, intercede for their protection and comfort.
