May 25 | Mary, Mother of the Church

St. Paul VI, at the conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council in 1964, declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as “Mother of the Church," that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother and established that “the Mother of God should be further honored and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles." But it was not until February 11, 2018, that the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments inscribed a new obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of the Church, into the General Roman Calendar. This memorial is celebrated every year on the Monday after Pentecost, which is appropriate as Mary was also present in that room for the birthday of the Church.

By issuing the Decree on the celebration of the feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, Pope Francis wishes to promote this devotion in order to “encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety."

The decree reflects on the history of Marian theology in the Church’s liturgical tradition and the writings of the Church Fathers. It says Saint Augustine and Pope Saint Leo the Great both reflected on the Virgin Mary’s importance in the mystery of Christ.

“In fact the former [St. Augustine] says that Mary is the mother of the members of Christ, because with charity she cooperated in the rebirth of the faithful into the Church, while the latter [St. Leo the Great] says that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, thus indicating that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of his Mystical Body, which is the Church.”

The decree says these reflections are a result of the “divine motherhood of Mary and from her intimate union in the work of the Redeemer."

Scripture, the decree says, depicts Mary at the foot of the Cross (cf. Jn 19:25). There she became the Mother of the Church when she “accepted her Son’s testament of love and welcomed all people in the person of the beloved disciple as sons and daughters to be reborn unto life eternal.”

In 1964, the decree says, Pope Paul VI “declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as ‘Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother’ and established that 'the Mother of God should be further honoured and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles.’”

After the joy of Pentecost, the Church now enters Ordinary Time, a season not of “ordinary” faith, but of daily growth in Christ. Beginning May 25, 2026, we continue our journey as disciples, living out the mission of the Holy Spirit through simple acts of prayer, kindness, sacrifice, and faithfulness each day. May this season help us grow in hope and bear the fruits of the Spirit in our everyday lives.

Listen to Rev. Fr. Kim Margallo's homily reflecting on today’s Pentecost Sunday.

24/05/2026

The Holy Spirit never comes without grace and purpose. He fills our hearts with gifts that guide, strengthen, and renew our journey of faith.

These seven gifts of the Holy Spirit help us grow closer to God and become faithful followers of Christ in our daily lives.

The 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit:

1. Wisdom – helps us value the things of God above all else.

2. Understanding – deepens our faith and opens our hearts to God’s truth.

3.Counsel – guides us to make good and loving decisions.

4. Fortitude – gives us courage and strength during struggles and trials.

5. Knowledge – helps us recognize God’s presence and purpose in our lives.

6. Piety – teaches us to love God sincerely and care for others with compassion.

7. Fear of the Lord – inspires reverence, trust, and a desire to remain close to God.

When we welcome these gifts into our hearts, the Holy Spirit transforms us and leads us to live as true disciples of Christ.

Come, Holy Spirit, renew us with Your love and lead us always on the path of holiness.

SUNDAY GOSPEL | Pentecost Sunday (May 24, 2026)

(Jn 20: 19-23)
On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the doors were locked, where the disciples were,
for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, "Peace be with you."
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you."
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,
"Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained."

The Gospel of the Lord.

𝗦𝗢𝗟𝗘𝗠𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗣𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗧

Fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ, the Church rejoices in the great gift of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary gathered in prayer in the Upper Room. With the sound of a mighty wind and tongues of fire resting upon them, fear was transformed into courage, silence into proclamation, and ordinary men into faithful witnesses of the Gospel.

Pentecost is not simply a remembrance of a past event; it is the living reminder that the Holy Spirit continues to move within the Church today. The same Spirit who strengthened Peter to preach, who united people of different languages and nations, and who brought thousands into the faith, continues to renew our hearts and guide us in truth, holiness, and mission.

As we celebrate the “Birthday of the Church,” may we allow the Holy Spirit to rekindle within us the fire of faith, the zeal to serve, and the courage to become instruments of God’s love in the world. In a time marked by division, fear, and uncertainty, may the Spirit teach us once more to speak the language of charity, compassion, and unity.

Come, Holy Spirit, breathe new life into Your people. Fill our hearts with Your grace, renew the face of the earth, and lead us ever closer to Christ.

Veni Sancte Spiritus!
