What is Tiyaarah?
Tiyaarah (الطِّيَرَة) refers to believing that certain things are omens that bring bad luck or good luck, and then acting based on that belief.
In pre-Islamic Arabia, people would look at birds. If a bird flew in a certain direction, they would decide whether to travel or not. Islam came and removed this mindset completely.
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Tiyaarah is shirk.” (Reported by Sunan Abu Dawood)
What it really means?
It becomes shirk when a person believes:
• Something other than Allah can cause harm or benefit on its own
• A sign or event can control the future
Because in Islam: Only Allah controls outcomes, not signs, numbers, or coincidences.
Examples of Tiyaarah
• Thinking a black cat crossing your path means something bad will happen
• Cancelling plans because you “feel it’s unlucky”
• Believing a certain day, number, or person brings bad luck
• Assuming your whole day will go wrong because of one negative event
Important distinction
If a thought just crosses your mind but you ignore it and don’t act on it, then you are not sinful. That’s natural.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah removes these thoughts through tawakkul (trust in Him), as mentioned in Jami at-Tirmidhi.
What to do instead?
Replace that feeling with trust in Allah and say:
اللَّهُمَّ لَا طَيْرَ إِلَّا طَيْرُكَ، وَلَا خَيْرَ إِلَّا خَيْرُكَ، وَلَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ
Allahumma la tayra illa tayruk, wa la khayra illa khayruk, wa la ilaha ghayruk.
“O Allah, there is no omen except what You decree, no good except Your good, and none has the right to be worshipped but You.”
This dua is reported in Sunan Abu Dawood.
When to recite it
• When sudden negative thoughts or fears arise
• When feelings of superstition appear
• When beginning something and an uneasy assumption enters the mind
In simple words
Tiyaarah is not just noticing a sign, It is believing that the sign has power.
Islam teaches: Nothing has power except Allah, and everything happens by His decree.
