Why We Celebrate Christmas?

Some people argue that Christmas or the exact date of the birth of Jesus Christ is not known. Others do not celebrate it because it is of pagan origin. Some do not even celebrate it. But many celebrate it without knowing why they celebrate Christmas.

The date is not important. What matter most is the event of the first Christmas. The prophets of Old Testament prophesied it. The angels announced it. The wise men search it. Herod was worried about it because of the birth of the King of kings.

Without the physical birth of the Savior, there will be no death as a requirement for salvation, without death there will be no resurrection. Without resurrection, there is no salvation… our Christisn faith is in vain.

Let us celebrate the event with Christ at the center of the celebration! Jesus is the Reason for the season.

Title: PLEASING GOD
Text: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-2
Intro: To please God simply means to bring delight and gladness before Him. As children of God, pleasing our Heavenly Father should be our highest priority. Pleasing the Lord is a central teaching as well as a command from the holy scriptures. It is also God’s way of blessedness. In our current study, the word of God identifies two types of people: (1) those who displease God; and (2) those who please God and are then blessed for doing so.
I. PEOPLE WHO DO NOT PLEASE GOD
A. Those that live only for themselves are not pleasing God (Rom. 15:1-3). Selfish people live and act as though the entire solar system revolved around them! They have no time for God and their fellowmen. Their time and energies are solely for themselves and their selfish interests! Such are miserable folks! What a shame since our Master Himself pleased not Himself but served others when he lived and walked for 33 years on this planet (cf. Phil. 2:4-9).
B. Those that only seek to please men are not pleasing God (Gal. 1:10). They fear, flatter, and make their earthly masters happy because they totally depend on them for their subsistence (cf. Prov. 29:25). The truth is, the Lord God is our real Master and true source of living! (1 Thess. 2:4).
C. Those that are in the flesh cannot please God (Rom. 8:8-9, 13). People led by fleshly lusts while pretending to be spiritual people only deceived their own selves! Eventually such are judged by God and die prematurely! Those enslaved by their fleshly appetites cannot inherit the kingdom of God (Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 6:9-10).
D. Those that have no faith cannot please God (Heb. 11:6). A man might have faith in the minister, in the church, or himself, yet have no faith in God at all! To have faith in God is to stand and stake your whole person on the authority of God’s words and promises.
II. PEOPLE WHO PLEASE GOD
A. Those who ask right things from God (1 Kgs. 3:9-10). Whatever things a person implores from God will ultimately reveal his character and sense of values.
B. Those who are separated for God (2 Tim. 2:4). How numerous are the Christians who are caught in earthly entanglements. Many are so busy striving to achieve a “higher income and standard of living” that they have forsaken their sacred duties towards God and His kingdom in the process!
C. Those who are wholly yielded to God (Heb. 13:20-21). Such have fully surrendered lives to God so much so that God can accomplish His will in them.
D. Those who walk with God (Gen. 5:24 cf. Heb. 11:5). It is a Bible fact that Almighty God delights in fellowship with His faithful people (cf. Amos 3:3)
E. Those who praise God (Psa. 69:30-31). Not all Christian singing is praising God. The Lord looks and judges our hearts even as we sing unto Him (Eph. 5:19).
III. PROMISES TO THOSE WHO PLEASE GOD
A. Their enemies shall be at peace with them (Prov. 16:7). This is a different from us going to our enemies to make peace but it is the other way around!
B. Their prayers shall be answered (1 John 3:22). If we make it our habit to do what pleases God, we may always expect sure answers to what we ask for in prayer.
C. Their name shall be everlasting (Isa. 56:4-5). Solomon declared that, “a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches” (Prov. 22:1a cf. Rev. 3:5).
Conclusion: Let us endeavor to please Him who is our God and Father for one day we shall all stand and give an account before Him. Amen!

God Is Out Helper, Defender And Victory.

Title: Things To Leave For Holy Living
Text: Colossians 3:5-17

Introduction: Apostle Paul counseled the Colossians on what they should live and what they should forsake for holy living.

I. What To LEAVE
1. Bad WORKS in life
*verses 5-7, (they must put to an END whatever belongs to their EARTHLY nature)
"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived."

2. Bad WORDS in speech
*verses 8-9, (they must get rid of filthy LANGUAGE from their LIPS)
"But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices."

II. What To LIVE
1. Good WORKS in life
*verses 10-14, (they have to put on the NEW self which is NOW renewed in the LIKENESS of the LORD)
"And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."

2. God's WORK among them
*verse 15, (let the PEACE of Christ becomes the PRECEPT in their hearts)
"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful."

3. God's WORD in teaching
*verse 16a, (let the WORD of Christ dwell in them richly as they teach and admonish each other with all WISDOM)
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom."

4. God's WORTH in worship
*verses 16b-17, (they should SING psalms, hymns, and SPIRITUAL songs with GRATITUDE in their hearts to GOD)
"And as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.'

Conclusion: God has called us to destroy the WORKS of evil in this WORLD. But how can we do that if we are still united with the DEVIL in DOING bad things? Let us PUT OFF the old life and PUT ON the new life for successful Christian living.
