I Got Everything I Wanted and Felt Nothing
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
Ecclesiastes 1:14 (KJV)
The thing you chased finally showed up.
The one you were sure would do it. The promotion, the person, whatever your version of "made it" was.
You'd pictured this moment for years. How it would feel. How you'd finally be able to exhale.
Then it came, and the feeling didn't.
There was a flicker, maybe a day or two of good, and then the same low hum you had before sat right back down on your chest.
Worse, you're already scanning for the next thing. The one that'll do what this one didn't.
Before you decide something is broken in you, hear this. A man already ran your experiment, with more money and access than you'll ever touch, and he wrote down what he found.
Solomon had it all. Gold and mansions, every pleasure he could dream up, and he denied himself none of it.
Then he sat down and wrote the truth about all of it. All is vanity and vexation of spirit.
When you look at the original Hebrew word for vanity in Ecclesiastes, it's hevel, which literally means v***r, a puff of breath on a cold morning.
You reach for it, you close your hand, and there's nothing in your fist.
That's why the win felt like nothing.
You didn't do it wrong. You grabbed v***r, and v***r is exactly what it feels like to hold.
Catch the other half of what Solomon said, too. Under the sun.
Everything under the sun, chased for its own sake, cut off from the God who is over it, comes up v***r. Every time.
The promotion wasn't the problem. You just handed it a job it could never do.
You were built with a space in you that big things still rattle around inside of. Nothing under the sun is the right size for it.
You can pour achievements in for fifty years and hear every one of them hit the bottom.
The God who is over the sun didn't stay up there.
He came down under it, into the v***r and the grind of it, and He put on skin.
Jesus worked a job, got tired and let down, and then went to a cross carrying the whole empty chase on His back.
He died and walked out of the grave three days later, and He holds out the one thing that never turns to v***r. Himself.
That empty feeling isn't proof something's wrong with you. That's God tapping you on the shoulder.
That hollow feeling is telling you the truth. A paycheck or a win was never the thing that was going to fill you.
I'm not telling you the promotion is bad, or that you can't enjoy what you worked for. Enjoy all of it.
Just stop kneeling to it. That thing was never strong enough to hold everything you keep piling on it.
Here's how to hold the win today:
1. Name what you were really chasing under the thing.
You didn't really want the title. You wanted to feel like you're enough.
You didn't want the money either, not really. You wanted to feel safe.
Take that real hunger to God, because He is the only place it ever gets fed.
2. Enjoy the good thing without worshiping it.
Thank God for the win instead of bowing to it.
Thanking Him for it turns the win into a signpost instead of a dead end, proof that the One who gave it is real.
3. Put your weight on the one thing that won't ev***rate.
Give God the first few minutes of tomorrow before the chase even starts.
Anchor the whole day to the one thing that will still be solid when everything under the sun has burned off.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I chased the thing, I caught it, and it left me emptier than I was before I started.
Thank You for the emptiness, because I finally see it was pointing me the whole way back to You.
I've been asking things under the sun to do the one job only You can do.
Today I'm done kneeling to what was only ever v***r in my hand.
Be the solid thing I build the rest of my life on top of.
Teach me to enjoy Your good gifts without turning a single one of them into a god.
