Magandang umaga po sa ating lahat. Let me begin with a question by asking you: have you ever felt insecure before someone else who was doing better than you? Minsan may nakita kang kabatch na mas successful sa'yo, or may kaibigan kang mas maraming achievements, or may kapwa parishioner ka na tila ba mas magaling magsalita, mas talented, mas popular.

And suddenly, something happens inside us. Or we ask ourselves: Bakit kaya ako naiinsecure? And every time we feel insecure, ano po ba ang dapat nating gawin? Sometimes, instead of admitting 'I feel insecure,' we protect ourselves by putting the person down. Imbis na aminin nating parang naiinsecure ako sa kanya, nagdadahilan tayo, and we tell them: May backer lang naman 'yan, kaya ganyan. Or we tell them: Hindi naman talaga sa ganoon kagaling. Or: Swerte lang talaga siya. And my dear friends, sometimes what looks like inggit, or envy, or insecurity outside, is actually insecurity inside.

And today, my dear friends, our gospel reading shows exactly that. We heard in the gospel, Jesus returning to his hometown in Nazareth, and he entered the synagogue. He read from the scripture. At first, the people were amazed. Namangha sila kay Jesus, but then something changed. They began asking: Is this not the son of Joseph?

And they could not reconcile the Jesus they knew with the Jesus standing before them. And instead of allowing themselves to be amazed by what God was doing through Jesus, they became threatened by him.
In short, medyo na-insecure sila. Bakit ang husay ng tao na 'yan? Eh taga-sa atin lang naman 'yan. Kilala naman natin siya. Their insecurity turned into hostility. And eventually, they tried to throw Jesus off the cliff. So delikado rin pala, minsan kapag naiinsecure tayo.

Friends, sometimes we do something similar. You might say: Father, wala naman akong balak itulak sa bangin. Yes, not by literally pushing someone off a cliff, but we do something similar by trying to bring someone down with our words. hinihila natin sila. Bakit kaya? Because their success reminds us of our insecurity. And someone else's success becomes maybe I am a failure.

But my dear brothers and sisters, remember this: someone else's success is not an evidence of your failure. God did not create us to live in competition with one another. Hindi dapat nagko-compete. But unfortunately, we sometimes turn life into a scoreboard. And we try to check who has the better house, who has the better car, who has the better job, who has more followers, who has more achievements. Deep inside, meron tayong listahan. And when someone seems to be ahead of us, we begin to feel that we are behind. 'Yung nakaagad 'yung pakiramdam natin. Yet you are called not to be better than everybody else. You are called to be faithful to who God created you to be. 'Yun po 'yung tawag sa atin, hindi maging nasa taas all the time.

And this is one thing that we have to remember today: let God define your worth. Because if other people's opinions determine your worth, you will always be insecure. Today they praise you, but tomorrow they criticize you. Today you are ahead. Tomorrow someone overtakes you. Today you are popular, but tomorrow someone else gets the attention. And if your identity depends on these things, your peace will always be unstable. Wala po tayong kapayapaan na matatamo. But if your identity is rooted in God, you can say: I know who I am, because I know whose I am. I belong to God, and that is enough.

Look at Saint Paul in the first reading. Paul could have impressed the Corinthians with his intelligence, with his eloquence, and even with his credentials. But he says he came not relying on his human wisdom, but on the power of God. And his worth was not dependent on being the smartest person in the room. His identity was rooted in Christ. Nakaankla, nakatanim kay Jesus. And that is what we need when insecurity attacks us. Kapag nag-i-insecure tayo, tandaan natin: Ah, naka-connect ako kay Jesus. I only have to remember I am God's. I belong to God. My dear brothers and sisters, perhaps the challenge today is not simply stop being insecure. Ang dali kasing sabihin niyan. But the deeper invitation is bring your insecurity to God. Dalhin natin sa Diyos. When you feel inferior, tell Him. When you compare yourself, tell Him. When someone else's success makes you uncomfortable, tell Him. And when you secretly ask: Am I good enough? Let God answer: Yes, because you are mine.

And realize this: we are all equal in God's eye. You don't have to defeat someone else in order to be worthy. Their light does not make your light dimmer. Someone else's gift does not cancel your gift. And someone else's success does not erase your worth. So maybe this week, whenever you catch yourself feeling insecure with someone else, let us stop and pray, instead of criticizing yourself and other people. Then do one more thing: name three gifts God has already given you. Not what you wish you had, not what somebody else has, but what God has already given you. Because when we know our worth comes from God, we no longer need to dim someone else's light just to feel bright.

And so, as I end this reflection, let us tell the Lord: Lord, heal the insecurity in my heart. Teach me to see my true worth in your eyes, and help me rejoice in the gifts of others without forgetting the gifts you have given me. Amen.

Diba madali nating gawin yan. We have the control over our cell phone.

And my dear friends who live in a world where we can customize practically everything according to our preferences. Diba? Kaya nating mag-customize depending on our own need. And sometimes, kapag hindi natin napapansin, we begin to treat our faith the same way.

When the Lord tells us, Do not be afraid, ayan, gusto ko yan. When the Lord tells us, I will be with you, yan, gusto natin yan. When the Lord tells us, Ask and you shall receive, yan, gusto-gusto natin yan. Pag sinabi niyang, Love your enemies, anong sagot ninyo? Kapag sinabi niyang, Forgive seventy times seven, oops! O pag sinabi niyang, Sell your belongings and give it to the poor, ano ang reply natin? Minsan gusto nating sabihin, Lord, wait lang, pwede bang skip muna yung part na yan?

But our faith is not like that. Jesus does not offer us a faith that is always convenient. That is why in our gospel reading today, Jesus reminds us.

Tatlong bagay: deny yourself, carry your cross, and follow me. Rather, he takes us, carry your cross. Walang condition.

My dear friends, Christianity is not simply about receiving blessings from God. Also, Christianity is about the willingness to give something. And what is that? To give love even when it is difficult. Kahit mahirap. And that is where the cross becomes real. Kahit mahirap. And so, madalas natin maririnig, meron tayong krus na pinapasan sa buhay araw-araw. Ito yung krus natin. Sinasabi natin. Partly, that's true.

Yes, my dear friends, these can certainly become crosses. But Jesus is also talking about something deeper. May mas malalim siyang sinasabi. At ano yun? The cross is not only what happens to us. Because the cross is also what we choose to carry because we love. Yung mga krus natin, yan yung mga pinipili nating buhatin kasi umiibig o nagmamahal tayo. Kaya ang sinabi ni Jesus, take up your cross, merong choice na involved doon. Pwede oo, pwede hindi. Hindi natin bubuhatin kasi pinapabuhat to sa akin. Pero pipiliin kong buhatin to kasi nagmamahal ako. Di ba ganyan yung taong nagmamahal? Diba? Naglalaro kayo lagi diyan, ano nilalaro ninyo ML ba? And so my dear friends, there are moments when it would be easier to walk away, to shout at people, to give up, or to simply say bahala ka na, suko na ako. But instead, you choose patience. Pinipili n'yong maging pasensyoso. And that is embracing your cross. That is carrying your cross.

That is your cross. But a kind of cross that you willingly carry. Na gusto naman nating buhatin, pero kung titingnan natin, these actions are not really heroic. They are not even dramatic. Wala naman camera. Walang pumapalapak sa atin. Walang award. But sometimes, the greatest crosses are found not in dramatic moments but in ordinary moments when we choose love over convenience.

And perhaps, one of the most difficult crosses today is learning when not to react. Asan kayo magaling mag-react? Online. Magaling mag-reply. Magaling minsan tayong sumagot or even magparinig. Mag-post ng cryptic posts. Minsan may nakikita tayong post na nakaka-inis. Minsan may comment na hindi naman totoo. Minsan may naninira sa atin, may nagba-bash sa atin. And immediately, ano ang pakiramdam natin? nangangati na yung daliri natin. Kailangan replyan ko yan. Kating-kati yung daliri.

But my dear friends, sometimes the Christian response is not to reply at all. Sometimes the cross is the difficult decision na iniisip natin.

And that, my friends, is called self-denial. Hindi dahil mahina tayo but because we love God more than we love winning an argument. Kaya ito yung paalala sa atin. Perhaps this is a challenge of today's gospel: do not unsubscribe from Jesus when discipleship becomes difficult. We unfollow God.

Let us not follow Jesus only when he gives us what we want. Let us not follow Jesus kapag ka lang may blessing. Huwag lang kapag answered prayer. Huwag lang kapag masaya o payapa yung buhay. Because there will be moments when following Jesus entails sacrifices. It entails sacrifices. It entails commitment.

But let us remember, ang paalala at pangako ni Jesus: Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 'Di ba? Mahahanap natin kahit pinapractice natin yung self-denial. So the world tells us, Preserve yourself, but Jesus tells us, Give yourself. The world tells us, Be comfortable in life, but Jesus tells us, Take up your cross. The Lord tells us, Unsubscribe when it becomes difficult, but Jesus reminds us, Remain with me and follow me.

And so this week, what is your invitation? Kapag kami sumusubok sa pasensya nyo, kapag ka natatempt kayong gumanti, kapag ka mahirap magpatawad, at kapag ka yung paggawa ng mabuti ay napakahirap din gawin, do not look for the unsubscribe button. Instead, pause for a while. Pause, take a breath, and let us tell the Lord, Lord, this is my cross today. I may not like it, but I choose to carry it. Please grant me the strength to carry it with love. Amen.

My dear brothers and sisters, there is one Filipino word that can either save us from sin or keep us in sin. And that word is the word hiya. But today, let me ask a different question: Nakakahiya kanino? Kanino tayo nahihiya? Because the direction of our life can depend on our answer. Didepende yung buhay natin sa sagot sa tanong kanino ba tayo nahihiya? If we are more afraid of what people will say than what God will say, we can end up doing the wrong thing. But if we are more concerned about offending God than offending people, then even when it is difficult, we can choose what is right.

And that is exactly what we heard in our gospel reading today. And yung isa nahihiya sa Diyos, yung isa nahihiya sa tao. First, let's talk about John the Baptist. John stood before Herod, and he said to him, It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife. And if we could imagine the situation, he was confronting Herod, the king that time. And John knew the consequences. Alam niya yung pwedeng mangyari. He could have said, Baka magalit si Herodes. He could have said, Baka mawalan ako ng mga tagasunod. Or he could have said, Baka sabihin nila judgmental ako. Alam niya pwedeng mapasama yung lagay niya, but then he did not remain silent. Why? Because John had a greater fear.

In short, John had “hiya” for God. And his question was not, Ano ang sasabihin ng mga tao? And that is why John had the courage to speak the truth.

Now we look at Herod. Herod actually knew that John was right. But during his birthday celebration, you know what happened? Herod made a promise in front of his guests. Then came the request for the head of John. And Herod knew it was wrong. He had a choice. He could have said, No, that is wrong. I will not kill John. He could have admitted, I made a foolish promise. I made a mistake. But he did not. Why? Because he became more concerned about his image.

And so, to save his face, he sacrificed an innocent man. The life of an innocent man. Tingnan natin yung irony sa dalawang tao. John was willing to lose his life to protect the truth, whereas Herod was willing to betray the truth in order to protect his image. Magkaibang tao. We Filipinos value hiya. And there is a good kind of hiya, shame. There's a bad or negative kind of shame. Sinasabihan tayong ganyan. And that can be good. That can teach respect. That can prevent us from being rude. That can stop us from taking advantage of other people. And it can remind us, Huwag mong gawin 'yan kasi mali 'yan. Mahiya ka kasi mali 'yan. That is a good kind of hiya.

Pero meron pong negative din, pangit and a dangerous one. This is a kind of hiya which says, Huwag kang umamin, nakakahiya. Or huwag mong itama yung mali, baka ikaw yung pag-initan. Nahihiya ka kasi may maling ginawa. And that hiya can become a prison. Why? Because sometimes we are not ashamed of doing what is wrong. We are only ashamed of being caught doing what is wrong. Magkaiba.

And my dear friends, it is the person who has the humility to say, Mali ako, 'yan po yung mga malalakas at matatapang na tao. It is not a weakness. It is a Christian strength.

In fact, sometimes the strongest person is the person not who wins the argument. Si Herodes, he could have said, Sorry, I got carried away. Mali yung pangako ko. But he chose his reputation over what is right. Kaya siguro mga kapatid, tanungin natin sarili natin ngayon: What am I afraid to do because of hiya? Ano yung mga kinakatakutan nating gawin kasi nahihiya tayo? Are you afraid to apologize? Are you afraid to admit a mistake? Are you ashamed to correct something wrong? Or are you afraid to speak the truth? Natatakot ba tayong itama yung iba? Maybe there's another question we could answer: What am I doing that I should actually be ashamed of? Maybe there's a sin that we have become comfortable doing. Sanay na tayo sa isang kasalanan. Maybe a lie, a gossip, or an unhealthy relationship. 'Yan yung uri ng hiya na nagsasabing ayokong gawin 'to, not simply because people might find out, but because I don't want to offend God.

And so, my dear friends, this week, whenever you catch yourself saying, Nakakahiya, pause for a while. Tumigil. And don't let hiya become the reason you remain silent or remain in sin. Because sometimes the thing we are most afraid to lose, our face, is the thing we should be trying hardest to save. Ano po yung dapat na inililigtas natin? Just like John the Baptist, let us try our best to save our soul, not just our face. And so let us end asking the Lord: Lord, give me enough shame to avoid sin, enough humility to admit my wrong, and enough courage to do what is right. Amen.
