Title: Serving with Significance
Text: John 13:3-5, 12-15, 31-35:
In John 13, Jesus washes the feet of His disciples, demonstrating the true meaning of servant leadership. Let's explore acrostic S-E-R-V-E that highlight the significance of this powerful act.
a. S-ERVING with purpose and humility
●verses 3-5, (Jesus washes feet, SHOWING us to SERVE with purpose and humility)
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
b. E-XAMPLE of love in action
●verses 12-13, (Jesus EXPLAINS serving is about following His EXAMPLE, not seeking status)
“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
c. R-EFLECTING God's glory through service
●verses 14-15, 31-32, (we serve others to HIGHLIGHT God's glory and HEED Jesus' command)
"Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you." Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
d. V-ALUE in serving one another
●verses 33-34, (CONSEQUENTLY, Jesus COMMANDS us to love one another as He loved us)
“My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
e. E-MBODYING love's commandment
●verse 35, (loving LIKE Jesus is the mark of a LEGIT disciple)
"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Conclusion: Jesus' act of washing the disciples' feet challenges us to rethink our understanding of leadership and service. May we follow His example, serving others with love and humility, and reflecting the glory of God.
