May 28 | Solemnity of Pentecost

On the Solemnity of Pentecost, Christians commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, gathered around the Mother of the Lord (Acts of the Apostles, chapter 2).

The solemnity is celebrated on the 50th and final day of the Easter season.

Prior to the Ascension into heaven, Jesus ordered the Apostles โ€œnot to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Fatherโ€ (Acts of the Apostles 1: 4-5), then he asked them to stay together to prepare themselves to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The "Promise of the Father" is the Holy Spirit.

The most significant manifestation of the Holy Spirit in Sacred Scripture is recorded at the beginning of the Acts of the Apostles. After the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven, the Apostles and some of the woman disciples were waiting for the Spirit that Jesus had promised.

And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. (Acts of the Apostles 2: 2-4)
This event is called Pentecost and is originally a feast on which Israel celebrated the establishment of the covenant with God on Mount Sinai. Through the Pentecost event in Jerusalem, it became for Christians the feast of the Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Pentecost approximately 50 days after Easter. (from the Greek pentecoste meaning โ€œfiftiethโ€)

What is the story of Pentecost?

The 11 remaining Apostles returned to Jerusalem after the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. Acts 1:14 says, โ€œAll these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.โ€ During this time, the Apostles chose a replacement for Judas Iscariot. They cast lots between two men, and the lot fell on Matthias.

After nine days of prayer, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples. They heard a sound like a โ€œmighty wind,โ€ and โ€œtongues as of fireโ€ were resting on their heads.

Going out, Peter to the crowd that had gathered. Even though, just a few weeks earlier, he had denied Christ three times, Peter courageously proclaimed the Gospel. That day, three thousand people believed in Christ and were received into His Church.

MAY 21 | SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Today marks the sacred Feast Day of the Ascension of the Lord, a momentous occasion that commemorates the ascent of Jesus into Heaven following his resurrection. It is a holy day of obligation, calling upon believers to reflect on this significant event.

The account in the Acts of the Apostles recounts a poignant exchange: โ€œThen they gathered around him and asked him, โ€˜Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?โ€™ He said to them: โ€˜It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.โ€™ After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.โ€

On this Feast Day, let us reflect upon the significance of Jesusโ€™ Ascension, and may it inspire us to carry forth his teachings and serve as faithful witnesses to his message, both within our immediate community and to the ends of the earth.

MAY 13 | FEAST DAY OF THE OUR LADY OF FATIMA

May 13 is the anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady to three shepherd children in the small village of Fatima in Portugal in 1917.

Three Portuguese shepherd children named Lรบcia (age nine), Francesco (age eight), and Jacinta (age six), received three apparitions from the Guardian Angel of Portugal in 1916 and six apparitions from Our Lady of the Rosary in 1917. Lรบcia later became a religious sister and received several more apparitions from Our Lady and Jesus Himself. These apparitions and their messages are among the most inspiring spiritual events to occur in modern times.

The first apparition took place in the spring of 1916 while the children were tending their sheep. While taking refuge in a cave during a storm, the children had eaten their lunches and prayed the rosary. They were playing games when they saw an angel in the form of a young boy on a cloud, who was whiter than snow, yet transparent and radiant with the sun. The angel said, โ€œDo not fear! I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me.โ€ With that, the angel bowed to the ground with the children and prayed three times: โ€œMy God, I believe in Thee, I adore Thee, I hope in Thee, and I love Thee. I ask pardon for all those who do not believe in Thee, do not adore Thee, do not hope in Thee, and do not love Thee,โ€ and then disappeared.

During the summer of 1916 the angel appeared to them again, almost chastising them, saying, โ€œWhat are you doing? Pray, pray a great deal! The Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary have designs of mercy on you. Offer unceasingly prayers and sacrifice yourselves to the Most High.โ€ When Lรบcia inquired how they were to sacrifice themselves, the angel replied, โ€œMake of everything you can a sacrifice and offer it to God as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for the conversion of sinnersโ€ฆโ€

During the fall of 1916, the angel appeared again, this time with a chalice and the Blessed Sacrament before which he bowed and prayed, โ€œMost Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifferences by which He, Himself is offended. And I draw upon the infinite merits of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, that You might convert poor sinners.โ€ Afterwards, the three children received Holy Communion from the angel.

On May 13, 1917, the children, once again in the fields, received a visit from a lady from Heaven. She conversed with them and told them to return to that spot on the 13th of every month for six consecutive months. In their conversation she asked, โ€œAre you willing to offer yourselves to God to bear all the sufferings He wants to send you, as an act of reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and for the conversion of sinners?โ€ To which the children replied, โ€œYes.โ€

On June 13, 1917, the lady appeared again, this time with about fifty others from the town present. After they all prayed the rosary, the lady appeared to the children as before and conversed with them. In part, she said, โ€œI will take Jacinta and Francisco soon, but you, Lรบcia, are to stay here some time longer. Jesus wishes to make use of you in order to make me known and loved. He wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. To whoever embraces this devotion, I promise salvation; those souls will be cherished by God, as flowers placed by me to adorn His throne.โ€

On July 13, 1917, a crowd of about 5,000 accompanied the children. They prayed the rosary, and the lady appeared as before. This time she gave the children a horrifying vision of hell and then spoke about the need for prayer and sacrifice to end World War I. She also warned that a worse war would come if her message was not heeded. She said, โ€œTo prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church.โ€ Then she asked them to add this prayer to each decade of the rosary: โ€œO my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who are most in need of Thy mercy.โ€

On August 13, 1917, as many as 20,000 people had gathered, but on that same day the children were arrested, detained in prison for a few days, and interrogated about their visions. The crowd, however, did see a phenomenon in the sky. On August 19, after the children were released, the lady appeared to them once again in the field.

On September 13, 1917, with a crowd of 30,000, the lady appeared and asked the children to continue to pray the rosary. She promised that if they did, the war would end. She then promised โ€œIn October, I will perform a miracle so that all may believe.โ€

On October 13, 1917, about 70,000 people gathered in the pouring rain. This time the lady revealed her name, saying, โ€œI am the Lady of the Rosary.โ€ She asked for a church to be built on that spot and promised that the war would soon end if they kept praying the rosary every day. When she left the children, everyone in the crowd saw the promised miracle. The sky opened, and those gathered were able to look directly at the sun as it glowed and danced. The sun then plummeted to earth, causing panic, but returned to the sky. Suddenly, everythingโ€”including the ground and everyoneโ€™s clothingโ€”was completely dry.

Within a few years, Francesco and Jacinta died and went to Heaven as promised by the Lady of the Rosary. Lรบcia entered religious life and received an apparition in 1925 during which Our Lady fulfilled her promise that she would return to ask for โ€œthe Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays.โ€ In 1929, Our Lady appeared to Lรบcia again, stating, โ€œThe moment has come in which God asks the Holy Father to make, in union with all the bishops of the world, the consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart.โ€

Above all, the messages of Fรกtima reveal the ongoing need to make reparation for the sins and sacrileges committed against the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus and Mary, and to pray for the conversion of poor sinners. Daily sacrifice and penance, offered with prayer and profound faith, do more good than we could ever imagine. As we honor these most glorious apparitions today, reflect upon your own willingness to make reparation for the sins of the world through your daily sacrifices. โ€œMake of everything you can a sacrifice and offer it to Godโ€ฆโ€ Doing so will not only appease the Justice of God, it will also bring about the salvation of many souls.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF FATIMA

Our Lady of the Rosary, you are the Immaculate Conception, the Queen of Heaven and Earth, and the Mother of God. Please pray for me, that I will heed the messages that you revealed at Fรกtima. Pray that I will live a life of continuous sacrifice of prayer, so as to make reparation for the sins and sacrileges committed against your most Immaculate Heart and the Sacred Heart of your divine Son. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You.

Meet Mary: Mother of Jesus

Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, was a young girl, probably only about 12 or 13 years old when the angel Gabriel came to her. She had recently become engaged to a carpenter named Joseph. Mary was an ordinary Jewish girl, looking forward to marriage. Suddenly her life changed forever.

Fearful and troubled, Mary found herself in the presence of the angel Gabriel listening to his announcement. She could never have expected to hear the most incredible newsโ€”that she would have a child, and her son would be the Messiah. Although she could not comprehend how she would conceive the Savior, she responded to God with humble belief and obedience.

Although Mary's calling held great honor, it would demand great suffering too. There would be pain in childbirth and motherhood, as well as in the privilege of being the mother of the Messiah.

Mary was willing to submit her life to God's plan no matter what it would cost her. Obedience to the Lord's will meant Mary would be disgraced as an u***d mother. Surely she expected Joseph to divorce her, or worse yet, he might even have her put to death by stoning (as the law permitted).

Mary may not have considered the full extent of her future suffering. She may not have imagined the pain of watching her beloved child bear the weight of sin and die a terrible death on the cross. But surely she knew that her life would hold many sacrifices as the mother of the Messiah.

Being chosen by God for a high calling requires total commitment and a willingness to sacrifice everything out of love and devotion to one's Savior.

Why is May Maryโ€™s Month?

In the Catholic Church the month of May is Maryโ€™s month. Itโ€™s the month we honor Blessed Mary as the Mother of Jesus and our Heavenly Mother. If you attended Catholic school, you probably remember taking part in the โ€œMay crowningโ€ in the beginning of Mayโ€“where a wreath of flowers was placed on the head of the statue of Mary as prayers were said.

Historians arenโ€™t exactly sure why May was chosen to honor Mary, but many believe that May being the month when spring is in full bloom has a lot to do with it. May is the height of springโ€“gardens everywhere are alive with blooming flowers and trees are filling their branches with leaves. This new beginning and new birth in nature reminds us of the life Mary gave to Jesus. Without Mary giving birth to Jesus, all the events that followed: Jesusโ€™ life, death, and resurrection wouldnโ€™t have happened. So, itโ€™s believed that May (when nature is showing signs of life) is the ideal month to honor the woman who gave life to our Savior.

Itโ€™s a Catholic tradition to honor Mary during the month of May by crowning her statue with flowers. The reason why we crown Mary is best summed up by Pope Paul VI who wrote in 1965 that May is an occasion for a โ€œmoving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world pay to the Queen of Heaven.โ€ The crown symbol is attributed to Mary because she is the Mother of the Son of God, who is our Heavenly King.

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION:

Am I like Mary, willing to accept God's plan no matter the cost? Can I go a step further and rejoice in that plan as Mary did, knowing it will cost me dearly?
