When Your Heart Is Broken
Brenda Walsh
June 5, 2024

When you are sad, discouraged or brokenhearted, it’s human nature to reach out to a friend for comfort. Somehow, just telling someone who cares about you seems to make things a little better. It doesn’t mean your faith in God is diminished because you reached out for human comfort. There’s nothing wrong with sharing your troubles and receiving support from earthly friends. In fact, the Bible encourages it. But don’t replace God’s comfort for that of others, because the comfort that God provides is so much more satisfying than anything a friend on earth can provide. Jesus is both our Savior and our friend. Keep in mind that God sees the “big picture” and knows what is best for us, and there’s no better place to be than in His comforting arms of love. Don’t get discouraged when going through life's trials, for being a Christian doesn’t mean you’ll never feel the pain of a broken heart. The Bible says that even Jesus wept. Although Jesus knew the future, He had complete faith in His heavenly Father and He knew God would win the battle, yet Jesus still grieved for his children. Jesus is the only “Healer of hearts” and the only One who can give real and lasting peace, joy, healing, and happiness. Text: Psalm 34:18, Psalm 9:9-10, Jeremiah 31:13-14

Bible Texts:

Psalm 34:18 NKJV - The LORD [is] near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.

Psalm 9:9-10 NKJV - The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble. And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.

Jeremiah 31:13-14 NKJV - "Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, And the young men and the old, together; For I will turn their mourning to joy, Will comfort them, And make them rejoice rather than sorrow. I will satiate the soul of the priests with abundance, And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD."

OKAY TO BE ANGRY
Brenda Walsh
October 5, 2023

God created man to be social beings with a wide range of emotions including joy, sadness, disappointment, excitement, and love. But there is one emotion, that although God created, needs to be carefully controlled, and that is . . . anger. If left unchecked, anger can easily turn into the sins of bitterness, jealousy, and hatred. There are times when it’s appropriate and understandable to get angry, such as hearing a news report of someone intentionally hurting a child, seeing or experiencing racism, or being wrongly accused of a crime would ignite anger in most people. Even God gets angry about injustice and evil. It’s quite normal, and yes, even “okay” to get angry when the situation warrants it, but that anger must be closely monitored and reined in before it becomes a deadly sin. Anger can quickly escalate to a point where relationships are destroyed, and that includes your relationship with God. It’s impossible to be loving and kind to others when you’re angry, so it’s important to make peace with whatever has ignited the flame inside you. The Bible even gives advice on how long you should hold on to anger. Ephesians 4:26-27 says, “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.“ Depending on the situation, talk it out with whomever you had a disagreement with and make things right. Colossians 4:6 tells us, “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer each person.” Talking it out may not always be possible or the best plan of action, so consult with Jesus first and follow His Holy Spirit guidance. It may be that God just wants you to release all the anger so He can fill you with His sweet peace of forgiveness. Sometimes the only closure you’ll get is knowing that you tried your best and God will do the rest. Release all the anger and allow God to fill your heart with His love for those who did you wrong. Choose to be “better,” not “bitter.” Holding on to anger will ultimately destroy you and separate you from your Best Friend, Jesus, and nothing is worth that! And an added bonus . . . you’ll be able to express those joyful emotions, smiling, laughing, and praising Jesus! Text: Proverbs 16:32, Proverbs 17:14, Psalm 37:8-9, Ecclesiastes 7:9

Proverbs 16:32 KJV - [He that is] slow to anger [is] better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Proverbs 17:14 KJV - The beginning of strife [is as] when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

Psalm 37:8-9 KJV - Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

Ecclesiastes 7:9 KJV - Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

A HUMBLE HEART
Brenda Walsh
October 4, 2023

Have you ever felt that there are some people who are just plain difficult to “love?” Perhaps you’ve encountered a demanding diner at a restaurant, who yells at the waiter, commanding that his food be prepared to his liking. Usually, the person sitting across that table is cringing with embarrassment and would like to be anywhere but there! And then there is that person in line at the checkout counter who is loudly making known her displeasure that she must stand in line. I’m sure the clerk can’t bag up her purchases fast enough just to get her out of the store. Sometimes it’s more comfortable to write a check for the needy than to get sweaty, dirty and tired helping those less fortunate. Let’s be honest - some people are easier to like than others, and it’s much more difficult to be gracious when you are serving someone who thinks they are too good to get their hands dirty. But Jesus performed the ultimate act of humility when He knelt down and washed the feet . . . the ‘dirty feet’ of His disciples - and in doing so, became the best example of how to serve. Jesus said in John 13:14, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” There is no better example than that - of truly having a “servant’s heart.” Let no job be so demeaning that you feel it is beneath you to help others. If the toilet needs unclogging - plunge it! If the floor is dirty - scrub it, and if the garbage is overflowing - throw it out! Never feel you are too good to work hard, too smart for common folk or too talented to associate with the lower class. Instead, shine for Jesus and always maintain a humble heart! Text: Romans 12:16, Philippians 2:3, Proverbs 29:23, James 3:13

Romans 12:16 KJV - [Be] of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

Philippians 2:3 KJV - [Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Proverbs 29:23 KJV - A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.

James 3:13 KJV - Who [is] a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

Get Off the Couch
Brenda Walsh
October 1, 2023

Accumulating wealth has been the principle pursuit of humanity since the beginning of time. People think that riches will bring happiness, comfort, security, position, and power. Young people think they have all the time in the world, not giving much thought to what is most important in life and how short time really is. But thoughts like that lead to an empty, meaningless existence. It’s so easy to get distracted by insignificant and trivial things that before you know it, you’re sixty years old wondering where the time went and frantic about your life’s purpose being unfulfilled. The truth is, time is precious and not to be wasted. From the moment you are born, you begin to die. The clock starts ticking and the countdown begins. There is no “pause button” on life, so don’t wait another moment to be all that God wants you to be. It’s time to get off the couch and be the “master of your minutes.” When you gamble with your time, you are placing a bet you can’t cover. David struggled coming to terms with just how short life is. He prayed out to God in Psalm 39:4-7, “Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days, let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. “Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be. But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” David prayed this prayer because he realized his life was nearing an end and he didn’t want to miss out on anything that God had planned for him. He was eager for God to reveal the plan for the remaining years of his life. The story of David brings hope to everyone. David was a man who sinned and failed miserably, yet God loved Him more than he could possibly imagine. As long as there is breath, it is not too late to turn your life over to God. Ask forgiveness for all the years wasted and pray that whatever time you have left, God will use you to the utmost. Text: Ephesians 5:15-17, Psalm 39:4-5, Proverbs 6:9-11, Romans 12:11

Bible Texts:

Ephesians 5:15-17 KJV - See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord [is].

Psalm 39:4-5 KJV - LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it [is; that] I may know how frail I [am]. Behold, thou hast made my days [as] an handbreadth; and mine age [is] as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state [is] altogether vanity. Selah.

Proverbs 6:9-11 KJV - How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

Romans 12:11 KJV - Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

Highest Priority
Brenda Walsh
September 30, 2023

Christians often complain that they would “love to spend more time with God,” but their life is too crazy busy to even have a moment to breathe. That line is usually followed up with all the excuses: “Mornings are too hectic,” “I’m too busy,” “I’m too tired,” “There’s always a million interruptions,” and so on. But here’s a fact - people always “make” time for the things that are important to them. There are quite a few ‘busy people’ who seem to have time to play golf, read books, take vacations, have a hobby or whatever else they're passionate about. If you don’t know what your priorities are, then that’s a problem. Without perimeters around what’s important to you, you’ll say “yes” to everything and accomplish nothing. Even worse, you’ll be like a hamster on a wheel, going around and around in meaningless circles which leads to burn out - not the abundant life filled with joy that God desires for you. Socrates once said, “The unexamined life is not a life worth living.” Take some time to pray and reflect and think about what it is that makes you happy, that brings you joy . . . and then take the necessary steps to remove the things from your life that are roadblocks to happiness. If God is your number-one priority, then you’ll not only “make” time for Him, you’ll find you can’t function without Him. Pray and ask God to take control of your calendar. God doesn’t demand that mornings must be the time you set aside for Him - it can be any time of the day - He just wants you to make Him a priority! Be courageous and jump off the spinning hamster wheel and rethink the values that are influencing your decisions and goals. Be intentional about setting clear priorities so that only what is truly important to you is on your daily agenda. Make God your highest priority and your life will be filled with joy, contentment, and best of all, an intimacy with your Lord and Savior such as you’ve never had before. Start each day singing His praises such as Paul did in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Text: Matthew 6:33, Psalm 63:6-8, 1 Chronicles 16:11, James 4:8

Bible Texts:

Matthew 6:33 KJV - But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Psalm 63:6-8 KJV - When I remember thee upon my bed, [and] meditate on thee in the [night] watches. Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.

1 Chronicles 16:11 KJV - Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.

James 4:8 KJV - Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded.

HEART AND MIND DISCONNECT
Brenda Walsh
September 28, 2023

When you experience the loss of a loved one, whether it be a sudden accident or sustained illness, there can be a disconnect between what the mind “knows” and what the heart “feels.” Death is so stunningly final and deeply personal that nothing can emotionally prepare you for its arrival. The truth is that even the most saintly Christian, when faced with losing a child, spouse, parent, or someone they dearly love can feel anger in their heart toward God. The gut-wrenching pain of losing your loved one can cause you to doubt everything you believe in. As your heart wrestles with your mind, questions begin to emerge such as, “Why me?” “Haven’t I served the Lord faithfully?” “I prayed and prayed, why didn’t God spare their life?” and “God, how can You truly love me and allow this to happen?” Faced with a tragic death, your emotions are all over the place from absolute devastation to downright anger. Coming to terms with the finality of it all takes time. Knowing you will never see their smile again, hear the sound of their voice, or feel their gentle hug leaves an emptiness no one else can fill nor can it be explained or adequately described with words. Only those who have gone over the cliff and experienced the free-fall of grief can truly understand the heart-wrenching alarm, dismay, and complete and utter despair. Grief comes and goes like waves of an ocean crashing upon the beach. Just when you think it’s safe to breathe again, another wave comes crashing over you, forcing you to revisit the memories, and feel the pain that will never truly go away. It’s okay to cry, feel sad, and be angry, because it’s all part of the grieving process and God looks upon you with compassion, not judgment. God is not “thin-skinned.” He doesn’t hold your battle between heart and mind against you. He knows you better than you know yourself and He understands the dichotomy of heart and soul. Praise God for His parachute of grace. Be kind to yourself. Give yourself time and space, and be honest with your emotions. Most of all, never give up hope. Cling to God’s promise in John 16:22: “Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” Text: Psalm 34:18, Psalm 31:9, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Matthew 5:4

Psalm 34:18 KJV - The LORD [is] nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 31:9 KJV - Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, [yea], my soul and my belly.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 KJV - Blessed [be] God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Matthew 5:4 KJV - Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

PRAY ANYTIME ANYWHERE
Brenda Walsh
September 27,2023

God loves you so much, that He doesn’t want you to face your problems alone! He stands ready to send ten thousand angels to your rescue if need be. And the good news is; God doesn’t put limits on how many prayers He will answer or how long you can talk. He not only listens – He is interested in everything you have to say. You can talk to God anytime-anywhere; while driving, working, taking a shower or even walking down a grocery store aisle! Although you can talk to God throughout your day, it’s still good to take time to pray alone, in a quiet place, and if possible - on your knees! Kneeling before the throne room of God shows respect and reverence. It reminds us that our Lord and Savior is to be worshiped! Too many times people try to bring God down to our “level," and then forget that He is our Holy, Almighty, and Powerful God who is the "King of the Universe!" He is worthy of our praise and worship – so pray anytime . . . anywhere! Text: Psalm 91:15, 1 Thessalonians 5:23, Luke 22:41

Psalm 91:15 KJV - He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I [will be] with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 KJV - And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Luke 22:41 KJV - And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

WAKE UP HAPPY
Brenda Walsh
September 26, 2023

It’s easy to allow your feelings to control your actions. If you wake up tired, grumpy, and just overall sour about life, chances are that everyone you come into contact with is going to wish you would go back to bed and wake up happy. Just one bad attitude can negatively affect everyone who is around you. Some people give energy, while others drain your energy. When someone pouts, makes snarky remarks, or is overbearing and critical, no one really wants to be around them. Most people love to be near others who are cheerful, positive, and will lift them up. Those who choose to be irritable might argue that they have every reason to be in a bad mood because of their personal hardships and difficulties. But no matter what trials or troubles you are experiencing, Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 6:6, “But godliness with contentment is great gain.” Paul should know, as he experienced first hand what it was like to truly suffer. 2 Corinthians 11:23-25 describes his tribulation. He had been flogged, five times he received forty lashes minus one, imprisoned numerous times, beaten with rods, pelted with stones, shipwrecked three times, and spent one and a half days stranded in the open sea. Despite all this suffering he chose to praise God! Your mood each day . . . is a choice. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Whatever you are going through, God can give you the strength you need to face each day . . . so choose to be happy! Surrender your trials, pain, and disappointments to Jesus and allow Him to fill your heart with joy, today and every day. Text: Proverbs 29:11, James 1:2-4, Habakkuk 3:17-18, Psalm 118:24

Proverbs 29:11 KJV - A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise [man] keepeth it in till afterwards.

James 1:2-4 KJV - My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing [this], that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have [her] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Habakkuk 3:17-18 KJV - Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither [shall] fruit [be] in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and [there shall be] no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.

Psalm 118:24 KJV - This [is] the day [which] the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

NOT COMING DOWN
Brenda Walsh
September 25, 2023

No matter what your enemies do in their attempts to destroy you - don’t fight back. Let God fight your battles for you. When you belong to Jesus, you are NOT coming down! They can mock you, gossip about you, conspire against you, and lie about you, but let them carry on. It will not destroy you for God’s Word declares in 1 John 5:4, “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” Christians will have trials and tribulation and you can be sure that the devil is working overtime in his attempts to separate you from God. The Bible even warns about it in 2 Corinthians 1:8-9, when Paul wrote about his tribulation: “We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced . . . We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.” You see, God wants you to totally surrender and depend on Him for everything! He has the power to control the universe and He can surely take care of your enemies. We’re told in Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God.” When you try and fight your own battles, you’ll lose every time. More importantly, you’ll lose your relationship with Jesus because you’ll end up bitter and angry, which will separate you from Him. Pray for strength to release all your burdens, trials, and troubles to God - and trust Him to fight for you. God will deliver His message loud and clear to your enemies letting them know . . . you’re not coming down! Text: Exodus 14:14, 2 Chronicles 20:17, Deuteronomy 20:4, Isaiah 54:17

Exodus 14:14 KJV - The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

2 Chronicles 20:17 KJV - Ye shall not [need] to fight in this [battle]: set yourselves, stand ye [still], and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD [will be] with you.

Deuteronomy 20:4 KJV - For the LORD your God [is] he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

Isaiah 54:17 KJV - No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue [that] shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This [is] the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness [is] of me, saith the LORD.

PRAYER PRIORITIES
Brenda Walsh
September 22, 2023

Sometimes when people pray, they do so in the same manner as if they were asking their wealthy, generous uncle. They plead for a better job, more money, a fancy car, or some exotic vacation. Or they pray demanding healing, or some other miracle on their behalf. But that’s not how God wants you to pray, He wants you to make your requests known to Him with an unselfish heart. And when you put other’s needs ahead of your own - you’ll experience the power of prayer such as King Solomon did. You might remember his famous prayer for wisdom in 2 Chronicles 1:11-12, “Then God said to Solomon: “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honor or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life—but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king— wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like.” Wow! That is pretty good evidence of how God feels about unselfish prayers! Set prayer priorities putting the needs of others ahead of your own and it won’t be long before you’ll find God’s will - becomes your will too. Text: Philippians 2:4-5, John 5:30, 1 Peter 4:10

Philippians 2:4-5 KJV - Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

John 5:30 KJV - I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

1 Peter 4:10 KJV - As every man hath received the gift, [even so] minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

LITTLE THINGS MATTER
Brenda Walsh
September 21, 2023

So often in life, people focus on achieving greatness and while there’s nothing wrong with setting high goals, it’s important not to lose sight of the little things that matter. Little acts of kindness say a lot about your character - such as allowing a driver to have that choice parking space you had your eye on, paying the toll for the random driver behind you at the toll booth, letting someone go ahead of you at the checkout line, holding the door open for someone, or mowing your elderly neighbor's lawn. And let’s not forget the power of a smile or simple compliment that can do wonders to brighten someone's day. All these seemingly small acts - carry eternal significance. The Bible says in Luke 16:10, “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.” And in Luke 6:35 we’re told, "But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.” You see, when you do kind things for others, you are actually doing them for God, and He is immensely pleased! In fact Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Take time each day for what might seem like “little things” - for even if no one else notices - God does! Text: Ephesians 4:32, Hebrews 6:10, Luke 6:35, Colossians 3:12

Ephesians 4:32 KJV - And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Hebrews 6:10 KJV - For God [is] not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

Luke 6:35 KJV - But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and [to] the evil.

Colossians 3:12 KJV - Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

WORDS SPEAK VOLUMES
Brenda Walsh
September 20, 2023

How you talk - says a lot about your character. If you are sarcastic, negative, or grumpy when you address others - it reflects on “who” you are - not just the mood you are in that day! Some people speak kindly to co-workers, friends and even strangers but once inside their own home it’s a whole different picture. They snap at their spouse, yell at their children, scold the dog and basically treat their family without respect. Using words with sarcasm and disgust no matter who they are addressed to - doesn’t reflect a heart surrendered to Jesus! Sharp words wound the soul and once spoken - can never be taken back. Instead of being negative - choose to be positive, kind and loving and let your words demonstrate to all those around you that you belong to Jesus! The Bible says in Colossians 4:6, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” You may forget the words of kindness you spoke today - but those who received them may remember for a lifetime! Proverbs 16:24 says that; “Kind words are like honey sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” Determine today to let your conversations reflect God’s love, not just those you want to impress, but to everyone - because your words speak volumes of not only ‘who’ you are - but ‘who’ you belong to! Text: Proverbs 18:21, Proverbs 15:23, Proverbs 10:20, Proverbs 17:22

Proverbs 18:21 KJV - Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Proverbs 15:23 KJV - A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word [spoken] in due season, how good [is it]!

Proverbs 10:20 KJV - The tongue of the just [is as] choice silver: the heart of the wicked [is] little worth.

Proverbs 17:22 KJV - A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
