FASTING AND ABSTINENCE: A Catechesis for the Faithful

As we journey through Lent, Holy Mother Church gently reminds us of the meaning behind fasting and abstinence. These are not merely rules to follow, but spiritual disciplines that form our hearts.

Fasting (Ages 18โ€“59)
On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, we take only one full meal and two smaller meals. Fasting teaches us self-control, detachment, and deeper hunger for God. When the body feels hunger, the soul learns to pray.

Abstinence (14 years old and above)
On all Fridays of Lent, we abstain from meat. This simple sacrifice unites us to Christ who offered His flesh for our salvation. It is a small but meaningful act of love and solidarity with His Passion.

Who are exempted?
The sick, pregnant or breastfeeding women, those engaged in heavy labor, the elderly beyond fasting age, and those with serious medical reasons are excused. Charity and prudence always guide the law of the Church.

Remember:
Fasting and abstinence are not about dieting. They are about penance, conversion, charity, and discipline. When we fast, let us also fast from anger. When we abstain from meat, let us abstain from gossip. When we feel hunger, let us hunger for holiness.

In the spirit of our Augustinian charism, may these practices help us grow in humility, interiority, and love for God and one another.

โ€œThe first Christmas was simple. Itโ€™s okay if yours is too.โ€

On that holy night in Bethlehem, there were no grand halls, no riches, no loud celebrationsโ€”only a humble manger, a loving family, and a child who came to change the world. In simplicity, God chose to reveal His greatest gift: love made flesh, hope born in silence, and light shining in the darkness.

This Christmas, we are reminded that what truly matters is not how much we have, but how deeply we love, how sincerely we believe, and how faithfully we welcome Christ into our lives. Even in our quiet moments, our modest celebrations, and our simple gatherings, the miracle of Christmas remains aliveโ€”because Jesus is with us.

โ€œFor unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder. And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.โ€
โ€” Isaiah 9:6

May the Child in the manger fill our hearts with peace, our homes with love, and our lives with renewed faith. May we carry the true spirit of Christmas beyond this seasonโ€”living with humility, compassion, and hope, just as Christ taught us.

Warm Christmas greetings from:

โ€œYou are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek.โ€ โ€” Psalm 110:4

Today, we joyfully celebrate the Sacerdotal Anniversary of Rev. Fr. Anthony R. Sibug, OFS, Spiritual Director of the OAD Lay Bataan.

Your priestly vocation is a precious gift โ€” a living testimony of Godโ€™s unending grace and love for His people. Through your ministry, countless souls have encountered Christ in the Eucharist, in the Word, and in the mercy of confession. Your dedication, compassion, and humble service continue to inspire the faithful and strengthen the spiritual life of our community.

As you mark another year of your priestly journey, may the Lord who called you continue to renew your spirit with His divine strength. May the Blessed Mother protect you, and may Saint Augustine and Saint Rita intercede for you always.

With grateful hearts, we thank you for your yes to God โ€” for being His instrument of peace, healing, and faith.

End of the Visitaciรณn: Thank you and see you again!

With hearts full of gratitude and faith, we bid farewell to the Pilgrim Relics of Sta. Rita of Cascia and all the Augustinian Saints and Blesseds, marking the end of their blessed journey across the Diocese of Balanga, Bataan.

Over the past days, countless faithful gathered in prayer and devotion, welcoming the holy relics into our parishes and our hearts. Through moments of reflection, veneration, and thanksgiving, the Visitaciรณn became a true journey of grace, faith, and communityโ€”a testimony of how God continues to work wonders through the intercession of His saints.

The relics will now continue their pilgrimage to the Archdiocese of San Fernando, Pampanga, spreading the same message of hope and holiness that inspired us here in Bataan.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the following parishes and communities for their generous welcome, hospitality, and love:

To our beloved Bishop, Most Rev. Rufino S. Sescon Jr., D.D., thank you for your unfailing guidance, spiritual support, and blessing upon this journey of faith.

And to all the faithful, devotees, parish volunteers, and the OAD Lay Familyโ€”your prayers, sacrifices, and devotion made this visit a true celebration of unity and holiness.
