POPE FRANCIS: 'WE ARE DUST LOVED BY GOD.'

Mga bok at ter, as we mark the beginning of the Lenten Season, let us reflect on this line by Pope Francis that while we come from dust and to dust we will return, "we are dust loved by God."

Pope Francis went on to describe ashes as a reminder of the direction of our existence: “a passage from dust to life.”

But if we allow ourselves “to be shaped by the hands of God, we become something wonderous.”

Lent, he said, is a time of grace during which we can change our lives by letting God gaze upon us with love.

“Our earthly possessions will prove useless, dust that scatters, but the love we share – in our families, at work, in the Church and in the world – will save us, for it will endure forever.”

When you say gin in the Philippines, one brand would easily come to your mind, the iconic Ginebra San Miguel.

The brand has been around for nearly 200 years. Ginebra has become part of some of the Filipino celebration. Perhaps this is because the brand represents more than a drink—aside from the fact that it has a fascinating connection with a Filipino National Artist, it also represents one of the powerful iconographies of the Roman Catholic Church—St. Michael the Archangel.

The Ginebra San Miguel label that we're familiar with today, featuring St. Michael the Archangel triumphantly battling the vanquished demon, was created in 1917. Along with modernization and improvements in production technology, Ginebra San Miguel introduced the image of St. Michael the Archangel vanquishing the devil, painted by Fernando Amorsolo (who would become the first National Artist), in its Bilog and Kwatro Kantos bottles.

The original label art was created in 1917 and was known as “Marca Demonio.” To design the label, Amorsolo incorporated the traditional iconography of the Archangel Michael.

The original illustration features the winged Archangel in red garb and a red cape. In his right hand he raises a sword with what appears to be a curved blade.

At St. Michael's feet we see a demon, raising his arms as if to protect himself from the Archangel’s blow. The wing design of the demon, which resembles that of a bat or moth, is typical of some artistic depictions. In the original label, we see a background of sky and clouds behind St. Michael, suggesting Heaven, and we see flames licking the demon’s backside, as he falls downward to Hell.

As we all come across a bottle of Ginebra San Miguel, may we not only encourage people to drink it responsibly, but also remind them of the triumph of the Good (archangel) against the evil.

𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝘿𝙄𝙁𝙁𝙀𝙍𝙀𝙉𝘾𝙀 𝘽𝙀𝙏𝙒𝙀𝙀𝙉:
𝘾𝙍𝙐𝘾𝙄𝙁𝙄𝙓 𝘼𝙉𝘿 𝘾𝙍𝙊𝙎𝙎.

Both the cross and the crucifix are the two of the most identifiable symbols of Christianity. No matter the setting, the country, the building, a cross or a crucifix marks that place as Christian. To see someone wearing a cross or a crucifix also identifies them with faith (for now, let’s set aside pop stars who flash these as mere jewelry or fashion.)

Yet, there are differences between a cross and a crucifix, ones so distinct that even a small child can manage to point them out. Even more distinctly, a crucifix is generally identified with the Catholic and Orthodox traditions, and a cross with Protestant. So, why the difference?

For non-Christians, these symbols can seem odd, at the very least. The cross is an instrument of death. It seems, to non-believers, the same as wearing a small electric chair on a chain around one’s neck. Even the early Christian community preferred not to use the cross as a symbol of faith because it was still being used in the torture and death of people. With the passage of time, though, the cross ultimately stands as the instrument of our salvation. It is the beginning of the end of death’s eternal hold on us.

The most marked difference between a cross and a crucifix is the corpus or body of Christ on a crucifix. Some Protestants object to the crucifix because of the belief (which we Catholics share!) that Christ is resurrected, not still on the cross and thus, (some believe) He should not be depicted that way. Others find the prominent Catholic use of the crucifix in our churches and homes borders on idolatry.

Of course, Catholics use both symbols frequently. While the crucifix holds a prominent place in most churches, you’re just as likely to see a simple cross in use by Catholics. For instance, many bishops choose to use the cross, rather than a crucifix, as their pectoral cross. Many Catholics choose to wear a cross as a symbol of their faith.

It should also be noted that most crucifixes include the sign INRI across the top. INRI is the Latin abbreviation for “Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum” or Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.

St. Rose of Lima said, “Apart from the cross there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.”

Catholics understand that both the plain cross and the crucifix are symbols of our faith, helping us to recall Jesus’ great sacrifice for us. Both give us a profound visual reminder of His Death and Resurrection, His sacrifice and His triumphant annihilation of sin and death. Yes, there are differences, but Catholics should hold both signs in high esteem, acknowledging both as powerful reminders of the Truth that is Christ.

𝙒𝙀 𝘼𝙍𝙀 𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝘾𝘼𝙇𝙇𝙀𝘿 𝙏𝙊 𝙇𝙊𝙑𝙀

Love is the supreme calling for all of us. All the sinner or saints, including priests, religious people, married couple and singles—they are all called to love.

To love as Jesus commands us, we need his help. We need his grace. When we realize how unconditionally God loves us, we will also begin showing that same love to our vocation, to our friends, to our families, and to our enemies. When we realize how much He has forgiven us, we will also freely forgive those who hurt, and mistreated us. When we realize that everything we have comes from Him, we will also generously share it with the needy without expecting something in return. As we grow in our relationship with Jesus, we will passionately share the good news of that love to other people.
