โAn Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.โ โ Jesus Christ (John 1:47, in reference to St. Bartholomew)
St. Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, is remembered for his simplicity, faith, and missionary zeal. He is often identified with Nathanael in the Gospel of John, the one whom Jesus praised as โan Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.โ Tradition holds that after Pentecost, Bartholomew traveled widely to preach the Gospel, bringing the message of Christ to India, Armenia, Mesopotamia, and beyond. His preaching was marked by courage and a deep love for the truth of Christ.
Bartholomew ultimately gave his life for the Gospel. He was martyred for his faith, likely in Armenia, where he was flayed alive and then beheaded. His fearless witness to Christ, even in the face of brutal death, has inspired Christians for centuries. Today, he is venerated as a patron saint of tanners, bookbinders, and others whose work involves knives and skins, symbolizing his martyrdom. His life and death remind us of the cost of discipleship and the reward of remaining faithful to Christ until the end.
Prayer:
St. Bartholomew, faithful apostle and fearless witness of Christ, pray for us.
Intercede that we may live with honesty, speak the truth with love, and share our faith with courage.
Help us to persevere through trials and remain close to Christ in all things.
Amen.
