The first Marian apparition in history appeared to Saint James the Apostle, the brother of Saint John the Evangelist, on the bank of the river Ebro in Saragossa, Spain. Unlike every other recorded apparition, this one took place during the earthly life of the Mother of God.

According to tradition, she had promised Saint James that when he needed it most in his difficult mission to the pagans in today's Spain, she would appear to him to encourage him.

In the year 40 A.D., while praying one night on the tobrt bank, the Virgin appeared with the Child Jesus standing on a pillar and asked Saint James and his eight disciples to build a church on the site, promising that โ€œit will stand from that moment until the end of time in order that God may work miracles and wonders through my intercession for all those who place themselves under my patronage.โ€

The church of Our Lady of the Pilar in Zaragoza, is the first church dedicated to Mary in history and it remains standing to this day, having survived invasions and wars โ€“ in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 three bombs were dropped on the church and none of them exploded.

Our Lady is also said to have given the small wooden statue of the apparition to Saint James which now stands on a pillar in the church.

Nuestra Seรฑora del Pilar is the patron of Spain and all Hispanic peoples. October 12, 1492, the feast of the Virgin of the Pillar, is the day Christopher Colombus first sighted American land, and when the first Mass in the Americas was celebrated.

Holy Virgin of the Pillar: increase our faith, strengthen our hope, revive our charity. Help those who suffer misfortune, those who suffer from loneliness, ignorance or hunger or lack of work. Strengthen the weak in faith. Arouse in the young an availability for a total surrender to God. Amen.

BLESSED CARLOS ACUTIS
12 October 2023

Carlo Acutis, a young Italian known for his tech-savvy nature, defied convention by becoming a modern-day Catholic saint. His life, marked by unwavering faith and a passion for the Church, resonates with believers in the digital age. This essay explores Carlo's life, spirituality, and enduring legacy.

Carlo's journey began in a devout Catholic family. His First Holy Communion at age seven ignited his deep love for the Eucharist, which remained a central theme in his spiritual journey. He attended daily Mass and exhibited exceptional kindness to the marginalized, embodying his faith through his actions.

Carlo's most notable project was his collection of information on documented Eucharistic miracles worldwide. He aimed to create an exhibition showcasing these miracles to deepen people's understanding of Christ's presence in the Eucharist. Carlo's blend of theological knowledge and technical expertise led to the creation of a website, making this information globally accessible. His example demonstrated how technology could serve as a tool for spiritual growth.

Tragically, Carlo was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006. Throughout his illness, he continued to inspire others with his unwavering faith and willingness to offer his suffering for the Church and sinners. Carlo passed away at the tender age of 15 on October 12, 2006.

Carlo's passing prompted widespread devotion, leading to calls for his beatification. In 2020, Pope Francis declared Carlo Acutis "Venerable," recognizing his heroic virtues. Carlo's beatification took place in Assisi, Italy, a place significant to him due to his admiration for St. Francis.

Mother Mary, through your intercession, please bring peace, to our families, to our country, and to the world.

Give wise discernment to those making decisions to pursue peace. Provide them insight into fostering well-being, freedom, and thriving for all. Teach all of us to resolve injustices with righteousness, not rockets. Guard our hearts against retaliation, and give us hearts for love alone. Amen,

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born in Sotto il Monte, a small village in the province of Bergamo, Italy. He came from a materially poor but spiritually rich family of tenant farmers who worked in vineyards and cornfields and who tended cattle. He was the fourth of thirteen children. As a child, he received an excellent education from his parish priest. He was confirmed at the age of eight and received his First Holy Communion a month and a half later. At the age of eleven, he began his eight years at a high school seminary in Bergamo. During this time, he also became a member of the Secular Franciscans. When he was fourteen, he began keeping a journal that he kept throughout his life and which was published after his death. One journal entry at the age of eighteen reflected, โ€œAnd you, O Godโ€ฆopened my eyes to this light which sheds its radiance around me, you created me. So you are my Master and I am your creature. I am nothing without you, and through you I am all that I am. I can do nothing without you; indeed, if at every moment you did not support me I should slip back whence I came, into nothingness.โ€

In 1905, Father Roncalli was appointed as the secretary to the Bishop of Bergamo and assigned to teach history and patrology in the Bergamo seminary. He served in these roles for the next ten years, assisting the bishop in numerous ways. He participated in a diocesan synod, helped edit the diocesan journal, La Vita Diocesana, assisted with pilgrimages, and engaged in various social works, about which his bishop was passionate. In 1910, he received the additional assignment of the pastoral care of the Catholic Action movement that sought to involve the laity in timely social needs within the Church and wider community. After ten years as a priest, he wrote in his journal, โ€œMy dominant thought, in my joy of having accomplished ten years as a priest, is this: I do not belong to myself, or to others; I belong to my Lord, for life and death. The dignity of the priesthood, the ten years full of graces which he has heaped upon me, such a poor, humble creatureโ€”all this convinces me that I must crush the self and devote all my energies to nothing else but work for the Kingdom of Jesus in the minds and hearts of men.โ€ St. John XXIII is the Patron Saint of papal delegates. A smart, holy bishop with a warm, fatherly personality becomes a pope of change.

Short History of the Most Holy Rosary

Many religions use beads to keep track of prayers. Our Rosary, a circle of beads, is like a garland offered to Mary because we pray a prayer on each bead. This well-loved prayer has its roots in the 150 psalms. People who couldnโ€™t read began praying 150 Hail Marys instead, the equivalent of three of our modern rosaries covering the original three sets of mysteries.

The story of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is an interesting one. In the 16th century Pope Pius V was having trouble with the Ottoman Turks, who were a real danger to Christianity. After months of disagreements and bickering, he was able to unite Spain, Venice, and the States of the Church in a naval expedition to fight the Turks.

The two navies met in the Gulf of Lepanto in Greece on October 7, 1571. On the same day, the Rosary Confraternity of Rome was meeting at the Dominican headquarters there. The group recited the Rosary for the special intention of the Christians at battle. The Christians defeated the Turks in a spectacular victory and believed it was the intercessory power of the Blessed Virgin that won the victory. Pope Pius V dedicated the day as one of thanksgiving to Our Lady of Victory. Pope Gregory XIII later changed the name to the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The story of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary focuses on the intercessory power of Mary. It shows that when Christians are in danger, they can go to Mary. And when an individual is in pain, discouraged, or having trouble accepting Godโ€™s will, he or she can also go to Mary. She will pray to her Son for anyone who calls on her. Anyone who prays to Mary no longer feels alone because she prays with them and for them. Mary encouraged praying the Rosary in her apparitions. At Lourdes when she appeared to Saint Bernadette, Mary had a Rosary. As Bernadette prayed it, Mary joined in on the Glory Be prayers. At Fatima Mary exhorted the three children who saw her to pray the Rosary for peace.

The Rosary is a deep prayer because as we recite the Our Fathers, Hail Marys, and Glory Bes, we meditate on the mysteries in the lives of Jesus and Mary. No wonder it pleases Our Lady when we pray the Rosary.

Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae;
Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra salve.
Ad te clamamus, exsules filii Hevae.
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia ergo, advocata nostra,
illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.
Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo Maria.

St. Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, is a revered figure in Christianity known for his transformative life. Born into wealth and privilege, his encounters with the poor and a spiritual awakening led him to renounce his possessions and embrace a life of poverty, humility, and service to others.

He founded the Franciscan Order in 1209, emphasizing poverty, chastity, obedience, and helping the marginalized. St. Francis viewed all of creation as interconnected, referring to animals and nature as "brothers" and "sisters." His Canticle of the Sun celebrated the beauty of the natural world.

St. Francis' influence transcends religious boundaries. His emphasis on simplicity, humility, and caring for the poor resonates with people worldwide. The Franciscan Order continues his legacy, and he is a recurring figure in art and culture.

St. Francis of Assisi's life exemplifies the power of faith, compassion, and simplicity. His commitment to serving the poor and all living beings remains an enduring source of inspiration and a reminder of selflessness and love for all of God's creation.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
