VIVA! | The first Sinulog Parade and official launching of the Sinulog Festival was in 1980.

In 1980, however, David S. Odilao, Jr., then Regional Director of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development (MYSD), organized the first ever Sinulog parade. He gathered a group of students, dressed them up, taught them how to dance the Sinulog to the beating of the drums. It was a small parade really which went just around the Basilica, but it caught the imagination of the City of Cebu, which then thought of making the Sinulog a festival that would rival all other festivals being held yearly in the country.

Thus, under the direction of then Cebu City Mayor Florentino S. Solon, the Sinulog organization came into being. The first task of the organizing committee was how to conceptualize the festival and make it a big event.

It takes outstanding leadership to build great teams, and winning teams are developed under leaders who can flex and bend their own personalities around each team member's needs.

According to Glenn Llopis, team building is both an art and a science, and the leader who can consistently build high performance teams is worth their weight in gold. When you manage each team member individually, you maximize their strengths and learn how to fill in for their weaker areas.

This is what true support is all about. Supported teams are successful teams. Leaders are only as successful as their teams, and the great ones know that with the right team dynamics, decisions, and diverse personalities in place, everyone wins.

Too many people feel that having a position of leadership and authority is their God-given right. They feel superior to those in their employ or at so-called lower levels in the organization. I have often seen a certain level of arrogance and entitlement exhibited by people in leadership positions that seek to tear people down instead of lift people up.

Leaders don't strike people down with belittling comments and never intentionally try to place you in an embarrassing or demeaning position. Instead, they show a genuine interest in you personally and professionally by asking, "How are you?" or "How's your family?" while listening and expressing real concern for your situation.

According to Inky Johnson, anybody who has direct contact with people daily that's an opportunity to change someone's life. So don't ever pass up a chance to be of encouragement to other people, don't ever pass up an opportunity to inspire someone because true leadership is all about people and inspiring people to believe that the impossible is possible; when leaders can inspire a group of people to perform beyond their normal limitation, great things will happen.
