Put God at the Center, Not Merely First
Many people are encouraged to “put God first” in their lives, and while this advice is well-intentioned, it can unintentionally reduce God to just one priority among many. If God is simply first, then there may still be a second, third, or fourth that competes for attention and loyalty. A more meaningful and faithful approach is to put God at the center of everything. When God is at the center, all aspects of life - decisions, relationships, goals, and values - revolve around Him. This perspective reflects a deeper commitment and a more authentic Christian life.
Putting God merely first suggests a ranking system. Life becomes a list of priorities where God is placed at the top, but other things such as career, studies, relationships, or personal desires still exist independently. In practice, this often leads to compartmentalized faith: God is acknowledged in prayer or worship, but excluded from daily decisions. When pressure arises, people may choose what is convenient rather than what aligns with God’s will. This shows that ranking God first does not always guarantee that He truly governs one’s life.
In contrast, putting God at the center removes the idea of competition. When God is the center, there is no second place rivaling His authority. Instead, everything flows from Him and is shaped by His guidance. Decisions are made by asking not only “What do I want?” but “What honors God?” Education, work, relationships, and ambitions are no longer separate from faith; they become expressions of it. A God-centered life integrates belief with action, making faith visible in everyday living.
Furthermore, a God-centered life provides clarity and stability. Life is unpredictable, and priorities can easily shift during times of stress or success. When God is only first, He can be pushed aside when other matters seem more urgent. But when He is the center, He remains constant even when circumstances change. This centeredness helps individuals face challenges with peace, knowing that their lives are anchored in something unchanging and eternal.
Some may argue that centering life on God limits personal freedom. However, true freedom is not found in doing whatever one desires, but in living according to one’s purpose. God, as the Creator, understands human life better than anyone else. Placing Him at the center leads to wiser choices, healthier relationships, and a life guided by love and responsibility. Rather than restricting growth, a God-centered life nurtures it.
In conclusion, God should not be treated as merely the first item on a list of priorities. He should be the center from which all priorities are formed. While putting God first is a good beginning, putting Him at the center reflects a deeper, more committed faith. When God is at the center, life becomes unified, purposeful, and grounded in values that endure beyond temporary success or failure.
Happy Lord's Day and God bless you!
