One Thing Needful

Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life - John 6:27

We would consider a man very foolish if he spent a great deal of money building a beautiful house, focusing only on the exterior, while neglecting the interior, leaving the walls unfinished, the rooms full of debris, and without any furniture or decorations. No one can find comfort in a house with a beautiful exterior if everything inside is bare and unwelcoming. A wise person would focus more on the interior of their home, making it beautiful, warm, and comfortable, so they can truly enjoy living there.

Even more foolish is the person who thinks only of their physical needs and gives no thought to the needs of their soul. They are caring for the outside, while neglecting the inner life. They provide for their body, which will soon perish, but give no care to their soul, which will last forever. They plan only for the present, ignoring the eternal. How sad it is to see a life that turns away from the best, most holy, beautiful, and lasting things, and instead pursues things that are worthless and burdensome, offering no true enrichment to the person who possesses them.

Jesus teaches us to prioritize our spiritual needs. It’s a terrible mistake to spend all our days working for food, clothing, wealth, and honor, while doing nothing for the inner life. At the end of such a life, there will be nothing to show for all the work, pain, and sacrifice. But if we care for our souls, when this life ends, we will have eternal life to look forward to. A good motto for life is, "Live for the things that are eternal."

The Missionary Spirit

They departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where - Luke 9:6

Many people don’t do this. They come to Christ and hear His command, but they don’t go out and preach or heal. They don’t take the blessings of mercy and healing that they’ve received to other homes and lives. This is deeply ungrateful to Christ, considering all He’s done for us. It’s also very selfish to keep such joy to ourselves instead of sharing it with others who desperately need it.

Christ’s desire is for the gospel to reach every home in the world, and He wants to accomplish this through the hearts and hands of those He has already saved. If we don’t share the good news, those who are lost may never receive it. There’s a story of a boy who, after being converted, immediately set out on foot—because he couldn’t afford a train ticket—on a journey of over a thousand miles to tell his brother about Christ. History tells us that many of the early Christians were so eager to share the gospel that they sold themselves into slavery or hired themselves out as servants just to be admitted into the homes of the rich and powerful among the pagans, so they could tell them about Jesus and His salvation.

It would be life-changing for us to recognize that we are under a divine commission to advance God’s kingdom by leading others to Him. If we only see ourselves as sinners saved by grace with no further responsibility, we won’t be of much use. But when we realize that each of us is an apostle, sent to be a witness for Christ, we will become a blessing to the world.

Let Scripture examine you before you use it to examine others. Let it confront your heart before it corrects someone else’s behavior. The Word of God was never meant to be a weapon for pride, control, or proving who’s right—it was meant to be a tool for transformation, repentance, and becoming more like Christ.

It’s easy to quote verses at people. It’s harder to let those same verses cut away our own bitterness, expose our own blind spots, and challenge our own compromises. But that’s where real growth happens. When the Word humbles us before it instructs us. When it breaks us before it sends us. When it cleans us before it commissions us.

Jesus didn’t use Scripture to elevate Himself above others, He used it to reveal truth in love. And if the Bible isn’t first softening your heart, refining your character, and deepening your love, then you’re not wielding it the way God intended.

Before you speak a verse, live it.
Before you correct someone, let God correct you.
Before you point out sin, ask God to search your heart.
Because the Word that transforms the world is first the Word that transforms you. 🤍🙏🏻

What We can do for Others

He sent them to preach. - Luke 9:2

Apostles aren’t the only ones Christ gives the commission to share the gospel. He wants everyone He saves to go out and spread the good news to others. Christian boys and girls can preach by living a sweet, beautiful life at home, at school, and among their friends. A life lived well is the most powerful kind of preaching. There’s a story about someone who became a Christian, and when asked under whose preaching they were converted, they answered, "Nobody’s preaching, but Aunt Mary’s living." Everyone should preach by living faithfully.

But there are other ways to spread the message too. The Bible tells the story of a little captive girl, far from home, who spoke about what the God of her people could do, and her words led to the healing of a l***r. We can tell others what Christ has done for us and what He can do for them, and our words may reach someone who needs to hear them and will turn to Him in faith and prayer.

This is a missionary text, and there are countless ways we can help spread the gospel. It’s a tragedy to keep something so precious, something that can bless the world, to ourselves. Men, women, and children everywhere need the gospel of Jesus Christ. Imagine a wealthy person during a famine, while their neighbors are starving, keeping their full barns locked up and not sharing food with the hungry. We who have found Christ have the bread of life for human souls, more than enough for ourselves and for everyone around us. Sharing this bread of life doesn’t deplete it. All around us are people perishing, and we may be the ones to save them. Will we keep to ourselves the bread that souls are dying without?

LP #23: You can never outgive God.

We should give with humble hearts, not ones of pride or jealousy. God has given us so much, and because of that we are called to give gratefully and generously. When we do, we pass a precious gift to others that honors our Father in Heaven.

THE STORY BEHIND " LEAD US HEAVENLY FATHER LEAD US " 🎶

Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us is one of the most beloved hymns on divine guidance and trust in God's care. The hymn was written by James Edmeston (1791–1867), an English architect, surveyor, and prolific hymn writer who composed more than 2,000 hymns during his lifetime.

The hymn first appeared in 1821 and was originally written for children. Despite its simple language, its message of dependence on God has resonated with worshippers of all ages for more than two centuries.

The opening line, “Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us, o'er the world's tempestuous sea,” reflects the Christian journey through life's uncertainties and challenges. Edmeston portrays believers as travelers navigating a stormy sea, relying on God's wisdom, protection, and direction.

Each stanza develops a different aspect of God's care. The hymn speaks of God's guidance through difficulties, His provision in times of need, and His promise to bring His people safely to their eternal home. Its themes are rooted in biblical imagery, particularly God's leading of the Israelites through the wilderness and Christ as the Good Shepherd guiding His flock.

The tune most commonly associated with the hymn today is Mannheim, a melody adapted from a composition by Friedrich Filitz (1804–1860). The pairing of Edmeston's text with this stately and memorable tune helped secure the hymn's place in church hymnals across the English-speaking world.

Over the years, Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us has been sung in churches, schools, and special services, offering comfort to generations of Christians seeking God's direction in times of uncertainty. Its enduring appeal lies in its timeless prayer that God would guide, sustain, and ultimately bring His people safely home.

The Hearer of Prayer

And he arose. - Mark 4:39

Though the storm raged, Jesus didn’t wake at the roar of the wind and waves. But the moment His disciples called for help, He woke immediately. What a revelation of His heart! He never sleeps when His people call out to Him. Amid the wildest tumults of this world, He hears even the faintest cry of prayer. He is never too weary to listen to the supplications of the distressed.

We see another example of this during Jesus’ crucifixion. Though He was in unimaginable agony, and a storm of hatred and mockery surrounded Him, He remained silent. He didn’t respond to the insults hurled at Him. But amid the jeers and derision, a single voice of prayer broke through. It came from the thief on the cross beside Him—a humble cry: “Lord, remember me.” And even in the midst of His own suffering, Jesus immediately responded to that prayer. Don’t doubt that He always hears prayer. His love is always alert, ready to hear the faintest plea for help.

Though the storm was fierce and sudden, Jesus awoke calm and peaceful. Dean Trench once said, “It is such cases as these—sudden, unexpected terror met without a moment’s preparation—that test a man’s spirit, showing the strength and purity of his character.” Here we see a glimpse of what Christ’s peace is like. It is the peace He offers to us: “My peace I give unto you.” This is the peace that sustained Him through all the turbulence of His earthly life, and it is the peace He offers to sustain us as well.

Profitable Hearing

Take heed what ye hear - Mark 4:24

“Take heed what you hear.” This is an important warning. The things we hear enter our souls and shape who we become, coloring our character. We live in a time of vast resources, with many good books available that can bless us, offering wisdom and healing. But there are also many books filled with evil, spreading poison that can destroy our moral and spiritual well-being. With such a wide variety of influences available, it’s crucial that we choose carefully what we allow into our hearts. We wouldn’t eat poisoned food, so why would we allow poisonous words into our souls?

If we listen to evil things or read corrupt books and materials, our hearts will become polluted, and our lives will reflect that corruption. We should shut our ears to anything unholy. Many ruined lives began with a single impure word whispered into a listening ear, or a vile book secretly read. On the other hand, every beautiful life is made beautiful by what it hears. Pure and true words have the power to transform.

The Bible is a book of words, but each word reveals something beautiful about God’s character or His will for us. By hearing God’s Word, we can be transformed. We should always be eager to hear the Word of God because it will always benefit us. But we must also heed Jesus’ other warning: “Take heed how you hear.” We should listen thoughtfully, reverently, and obediently, allowing God’s words to enter our hearts and transform our lives.

Rootless Grace

Some fell upon stony places. - Matt 13:5

In the parable, there is a thin layer of soil over rock. The seed sinks in just a little, and the warmth radiating from the rock causes it to sprout quickly. This represents people whose faith is primarily emotional. At first, they seem full of promise. They respond immediately to appeals, and their feelings rise to the surface. Such people often appear deeply affected by sorrow, and they grieve intensely, but their grief passes quickly. In the same way, they seem to be deeply moved by religious experiences, beginning their Christian life with a fervor that puts older believers to shame. They attend every meeting, weep during prayers, and talk openly about Christ. Their zeal is remarkable: “It sprang up quickly, because it had no depth of soil.”

But this rapid growth lacks deep roots, and it can’t withstand the heat of trials. The sun soon scorches the young plants, and they wither. In the spiritual realm, the same thing happens. Emotional faith often lacks depth and permanence. It bursts into exuberant life but may not survive the challenges of temptation, hardship, or sorrow. Too often, the enthusiasm fades, and when difficulties arise, the rootless faith withers and dies.

In contrast, the most enduring spiritual life usually grows slowly and steadily. It takes root in deep, fertile soil, unaffected by changes in circumstances, weathering both heat and cold, rain and drought.

If you find that your spiritual life is shallow, with hard rock beneath the surface, you should seek to break up that rock through repentance and prayer, allowing the plants of righteousness to grow strong and deep.
