MARCH 02—ASH WEDNESDAY

'Remember, you are dust, and to dust you shall return.'—Ecclesiastes 3:20

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is always 46 days before Easter Sunday. Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration. This period represents Christ’s time of temptation in the wilderness, where he fasted and where Satan tempted him.

The ashes are prepared by burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. On Palm Sunday, churches bless and hand out palm branches to attendees, a reference to the Gospels’ account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when onlookers lay palm branches on his path.

When we come forward to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, we are saying that we are sorry for our sins, and that we want to use the season of Lent to correct our faults, purify our hearts, control our desires and grow in holiness so we will be prepared to celebrate Easter with great joy.

With this focus on our own mortality and sinfulness, Christians can enter into the Lent season solemnly, while also looking forward in greater anticipation and joy of the message of Easter and Christ’s ultimate victory over sin and death.

BEGIN THE FIRST DAY OF
LENTEN SEASON WITH PRAYER

The best way to start the Lenten Season is to begin it with a prayer. Because there is no better time to reconnect with or deepen one’s faith than Lent. During this time, we can draw closer to God as we prepare for the joyous celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Easter. As a genuine child of God, you should know better than anyone else that every new month comes with new blessings. It is, therefore, an avenue to invoke God’s blessing upon our lives, loved one, family, friends, and many other important people around us by simply sending them happy new month prayers and blessings that will protect and cause an unrecoverable breakthrough in their life. As we begin the first day of February, here's a simple prayer for everyone:

Lord, I thank You for the opportunity and grace
to see this beautiful month. May this month be
filled with Your blessings, protection, and goodness
for me and loved ones. May this new month
also be a beginning of open doors: divine
favor, greatness, restoration, and intervention
on every matter that concern me.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
– Amen.

𝙂𝘼𝙐𝘿𝙀𝙏𝙀 & 𝙇𝘼𝙀𝙏𝘼𝙍𝙀—𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙅𝙊𝙔 𝙊𝙁 𝙒𝘼𝙄𝙏𝙄𝙉𝙂

Rose is the liturgical color of rejoicing. Laetare is a Latin word that indicates rejoicing. Liturgically, the joy expressed is that of the salvation gained for us by the Lord’s suffering, death and resurrection, resulting in victory over death.

Aside from Laetare Sunday, there is one other time that the church uses the color rose during Mass. It is on the Third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday. This is when we light the pink candle on the Advent wreath.

While both gaudete and laetare refer to rejoicing, there is a slight difference between them. Gaudete more correctly refers to “enjoyment.” Laetare means to “be light-hearted.”

So even though we are entering a time of the church year when our hearts become heavy in the shadow of the cross, Laetare Sunday is a moment to remember that the cross was the beginning of glory for the Lord and for us. It is meant to lift our hearts with hope.
